I think I'm also looking through a slightly different lens.

Look at it this way--I think most of the outrage from me is less about Wilson himself and more about inconsistencies with everyone else/the DoPS. I can't speak for anyone else but I suspect others feel the same way. We're in a different conference so I can't imagine many here have that strong of personal feelings about the player in general.

Like I sure don't want him banned or even suspended for a long time, but I sure think he needs more than a fine.

I see where you're going though and there might be an OVERfocus on Wilson here but even if that's the case elsewhere, I'm just taking it as a flashpoint of the issues with player safety rather than a referendum on Wilson alone.

First off...the Rangers firings are gnarly. Sorry to everyone that doesn't like it, but this type of drama is good for the league. I've got my first non-Kings game queued up in the DVR tonight.

Not liking the Wheel of Justice and the DOPS is completely fine: this is just isn't the incident to finally say enough is enough. It's become the straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back though due to Wilson being involved. The Rangers made it worse with that silly statement.

Who would be authorized to send out a statement like the Rangers put out there? You'd think something like that has to come from the top, which would make the firings being coincidental make some sense. If the statement somehow came out rogue though, you're almost forced to fire someone just on chain of command principles.

It's all very interesting. Davidson is a long-time hockey guy that always seemed to enjoy calling fights for the Rangers back in the day. I could definitely see him not wanting to put that statement out because he is old school and you just go and take care of it on the ice.

If Dolan authorized it, he's putting Bettman on blast and you think he'd want other owners on board with the sentiment. Maybe they are on board, maybe not and maybe Dolan is one of the worst owners in professional sports and simply got caught up in the Twitter mob about it and had the statement be put out. Maybe Dolan is upset that these guys built a p***y team that didn't do anything about it and then also put out a statement without his blessing.

Either way, it is all very interesting. The fact that the statement was put out was pretty mind-blowing and it reads like it was put together by some idiot in the PR department that has watched the NHL for only three seasons. I still can't get over "horrific act of violence".

gotta think that statement came from the top. volatile owner making a rash emotional decision and tossing everyone who disagrees sounds viable to me. i imagine there have probably been some not-so-friendly conversations between the 3 since the incident

Sure. Just like I'd be fine if this firestorm regarding Wilson was for his calling card headshot and not a "whatever" type of incident.

Grain of salt for sure because, you know, it's easy to join the mob and get some play plus older players always drop the "more respect in my day" thing. Of course, John Scott tried to fight Kessel in a pre-season game so not exactly a gentleman himself.

I'd hate Dustin Brown if he wasn't a King and it always bummed me out that he would nearly always run away. Kirk Maltby is maybe my least favorite player of all time and it was because he would hit, hide behind his visor and keep his gloves cemented on. Lapperriere was a guy that was kind of hit-and-run and a spot picker. It finally clicked for him and he changed his game and is now thought of as one of the last real warrior types.

This is exactly what I'm talking about and it isn't an insult to you. Brown is a reckless hitter on HF Kings. Well, so is Wilson on HF Caps but both of these guys are intentionally dirty everywhere else.

Fair enough.

Rangers can't build a contender and they have to be the luckiest franchise in terms of being handed talent.

Fox wanted to be traded there

Trouba wanted to be traded there

Panarin wanted to sign there

Two top 2 picks that so far have been a massive disappointment.

Now we've got Messier talking on the radio about how he wouldn't have built a soft team and how the Rangers have no answer for Wilson.

He's right: their answer was to put out a press release.

Dolan could easily be upset that his team looks weak and probably won't do anything tonight. Hell, Dolan may have wanted them to call up a tough guy and they refused so he canned them. Lemieux isn't Bob Probert but they got rid of the only guy that brought a sandpaper element.

Fascinating stuff.

Blake should be calling Drury about a McDermid for a 1st.

Screw that. We should trade for Drury himself. At his age he is probably still twice the player half the crap we throw out there is. We know he has twice the heart anyways. We need a guy like he used to be

Am I the only one thinking the "success" of Gorton and Davidson is overstated?

Fox and Panarin wanted to play in New York. They won the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks in consecutive years. Those are the major franchise-defining moves.

Not saying they're bad, but I'm not particularly impressed with any "savvy" moves.

This is what they get for trading Brendan Lemieux.

Underacheived? They lost Panarin and Trouba for a significant amount of time. Young team, growing well. You can't force experience. They have a great young goalie, good forward group and a stud in Fox. Their owners are nuts . Unless the owners want to make changes that JD and Gorton didn't agree with.
Either way, very dumb.

Take this with a grain of salt, but we are also in a chat room, so it's fun to throw this stuff out -

Someone on the Rangers forum said they know someone close to the team that said the locker room is a total mess. Lots of stuff going on so maybe the brawl and Wilson brutalizing half their roster was the breaking point. I also wonder how many players are angry with how the Rangers handled Tony DeAngelo. This makes sense because Michael Rupp has said NUMEROUS times that he's loved in that locker room.

The team is fractured and on the ropes, Rob needs to steal Fox for some picks and double-doubles ASAP!!!

Just from short reading, it sounds like it came from Dolan, JD and Gorton where putting out signals that they didn't know it was coming, didn't agree with it etc....

Imo, that's what happens when you get a bunch of "I only want to play in NYR" primadonnas together. Bunch of selfish mercs who aren't thinking of anyone but themselves first.

Trouba's overrated but he got what he wanted. Fox had to burn his way out of several locations. DeAngelo has been all over the map in his career. Like we might complain our leadership is too passive, comfortable--but how can anyone be comfortable in that shitshow?

why wouldn't you wait the 3 or so games left ,like a normal human being, to make changes within the front office? You decide to fire them right after that tweet which they probably had nothing to do with?

if you believe that ownership wanted to make the move before that tweet it makes sense for Drury to be the guy doing exit interviews.

Trouba got crunched on a clean hit by Matt Martin in the first period of a game on like April 20th. Hasn't played since the hit and the Rangers did jack shit about it. They then played the Islanders two more times--the two games before the Wilson game--and again did nothing while losing 4-0 and 3-0. Then they let Wilson commit an act of horrific violence on their best player. If nobody on that team does something tonight, it is pretty telling: especially because Panarin got ragdolled due to actually trying to stand up for a teammate.

It's an issue that myself and many others--you included--have with the Kings: are they a collection of dudes or an actual team? Rebuilds don't work unless you get a group of guys that will go to bat for each other. I would have liked to see this part of it come together a lot more this season but the season has mostly been a stark reminder that there is a long way to go in this regard.

Matt Greene got made fun of a lot for being a horrible fighter but the main thing was that he showed up. Dude is super likeable regardless but, man, are you going to want to follow someone and/or not let someone down that sticks up for you? That type of stuff can be infectious throughout the lineup but it has been sorely lacking within this franchise for awhile now.
