If all we get for TT is a 2nd, then all the reports are wrong and only one team is after him.
But yes, you would take that 2nd all day. But there’s no way a bidding war results in that.
That's the thing though, we don't really know the details of what the GMs are talking about. Interest can mean almost anything. What does kicking tires mean for example? Are you really there to buy? Are you killing some time? How many other lots have you been to?
I would just say that if there's a preset level of value, without having direct information available, and anything below that arbitrary and external level is a failure, you would sort of be setting yourself up to be upset. The trade will be what it is. It all depends on who you're talking to, what else they've done, what either side is willing to accept, etc, etc. Maybe Toffoli is the 3rd or 4th option around the league, for one reason or another, and nobody wants to go all in on him. Maybe someone doesn't see him as the difference between going out in the 1st or a trip to the Final.
I'm not one that blames Lombardi or Blake for not trading Carter in 2017 though. 32 at the time, 5 years left. Nobody that fit that description was traded around that time. We also don't know what, or if, offers were made for Carter. If any old guys were traded, they didn't return potential, which is all we wanted, because the team wasn't a contender anymore. Pominville, at 35, with 2 years left, was traded at the 2017 draft. Minnesota accepted a 26 and 28 year old in return, while also giving Buffalo a 27 year old defenseman. I imagine that would've been considered a failure for Carter, but 32 year olds don't really bring back potential.
We'll see what the market provides.
