If all we get for TT is a 2nd, then all the reports are wrong and only one team is after him.

But yes, you would take that 2nd all day. But there’s no way a bidding war results in that.

That's the thing though, we don't really know the details of what the GMs are talking about. Interest can mean almost anything. What does kicking tires mean for example? Are you really there to buy? Are you killing some time? How many other lots have you been to?

I would just say that if there's a preset level of value, without having direct information available, and anything below that arbitrary and external level is a failure, you would sort of be setting yourself up to be upset. The trade will be what it is. It all depends on who you're talking to, what else they've done, what either side is willing to accept, etc, etc. Maybe Toffoli is the 3rd or 4th option around the league, for one reason or another, and nobody wants to go all in on him. Maybe someone doesn't see him as the difference between going out in the 1st or a trip to the Final.

I'm not one that blames Lombardi or Blake for not trading Carter in 2017 though. 32 at the time, 5 years left. Nobody that fit that description was traded around that time. We also don't know what, or if, offers were made for Carter. If any old guys were traded, they didn't return potential, which is all we wanted, because the team wasn't a contender anymore. Pominville, at 35, with 2 years left, was traded at the 2017 draft. Minnesota accepted a 26 and 28 year old in return, while also giving Buffalo a 27 year old defenseman. I imagine that would've been considered a failure for Carter, but 32 year olds don't really bring back potential.

We'll see what the market provides.

Even though Carolina is on pace to have 1 fewer point than last year, they don't feel like the same team. With or without Hamilton. They're 5-3-1 so far without him, which a 100 point pace. Last year, 39 regulation wins, 29 regulation losses, so a +10. This year, 22 and 21. They already have 3 more SO wins than all of last year.

Draisaitl is the freakin real deal. Can't believe the Oilers lucked out and got McJesus and Drai. Now I really hope they never win it. This guy can do it without McJesus. Yes I admit I'm full with envy. Sheesh. Screw you Oilers screw you.

This is not what you want to see out of the first overall pick. When you are mentioned in the same breath as Stefan and Yakupov, that would make me uncomfortable if I were NJ:

First overall pick Jack Hughes is on pace for 30 points. For perspective, 1999 No. 1 overall pick Patrik Stefan of Atlanta had 25 points in 72 games, while 2012 Oilers' No. 1 overall Nail Yakupov had 31 points in 48 games.

Had the Kings got him, he’d be on pace for 15 points.

Wow that is scary. Hope he'll be okay. Dang.

Major props to the medical teams who jumped in immediately. This was a cardiac event and every second counts. At least he was on the bench when it happened and not on the ice. where falling could have caused a head injury.

One of the broadcasters mentioned it was the Blues Dads trip.

Bad news gets worse for Columbus. Seth Jones expected to miss 8-10 weeks. Pretty much the rest of the regular season.

And that is one player that can't be replaced. In addition to him, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Nyquist, Nick Foligno, Boone Jenner, David Savard and Vladislav Gavrikov are all hurt as well.

However, this article is a good read on why that team excels despite the odds
:How do the Blue Jackets just keep winning games?

Elvis- Jackets were high on him last year and he's been gold. He's the biggest X factor

Defense first- After losing a signifant part of their offense, Torts made adjustments to the system, for a defense first mentality, and are top 5 in the NHL, including shot attempts, SOG's, and high % attempts.
Also their 5 x 5 play is very good:

the 14.9% they give up at 5-on-5 and 15.6% they give up across all situations are both second best in the NHL. By taking away the cross-seam pass that every team would like to execute, they make life so much easier for their goalies by allowing them to focus on squaring up shooters without fear of being beaten laterally or through the back do

The Jackets do it by tactfully picking and choosing what they'll allow the opposition to have offensively, guiding them further and further to the perimeter by clogging the dangerous areas, such as the middle of the ice and around the net.

NOt sure given the loss of Jones , they will able to sustain that but I wouldn't be surprised if they stay in the hunt

I'm not overly worried yet, it's been a bit of gong show this year around him. I'd venture to guess that his most common linemate this year has been Wayne Simmonds. If anything Hughes probably got more ice time than they were anticipating. Joe Thornton also had 7 points in 55 games as a rookie, Vinny Lecavalier had 28 points in 82 games the year after that as the #1 pick.

Not that it was a primary reason for anything, but Stefan and Yakupov were also late birthdays so they got an extra year of development before going to the NHL. Also I always enjoy the "what if" with Stefan since he was 1 day too young for the 1998 Draft; If he had been a day older, how would that have changed things? Namely, the Sedins possibly would have been separated.

Quinn Hughes as a late birthday had the benefit of a couple of seasons in college before the NHL, so that gives me a little hope that Jack can follow a similar trajectory by the time he's 20. Jack definitely has some work to do defensively for sure.

Looks like a ton of Defensemen around the league are going down. A. Mart might just fetch us something good.

Canucks retiring the Sedins jerseys tonight, Hope they show this as part of their video montage.

I thought the Sedins were cry babies till the 2012 series. Those two took hits and did not complain at all. They played hard.
From that series on even though I hated the Casucks I enjoyed watching those two play.
I've never thought of them as crybabies. They just weren't your conventional scrappy hockey players. North Americans love their hockey players pushing and shoving, bulldozing their way to the goal. The Sedins were viewed as softies because they never engaged in the chippy stuff.

They were magical as a pair, playing with one mind. Their give-and-gos were pure artistry.

Jeebus, Matthews has an unbelievable release. Just scored his 41st if the season versus Dallas and it was a beauty of a snipe.

Can’t wait to see him paired with Lafreniere for the Kings come 2024-25 :naughty::sarcasm:

Denis Gurianov with his 17th for Dallas. Honestly don’t know a whole lot about him but I like what I see.

I don't know... this only made me loathe them (and the team) even more:
