However, reg wins and OT wins have always needed to be separate, because they're very different. Ever since 16-17, when the King missed the playoffs by 8 points, but led the league in OT wins, I've been interested in the difference. That same year, the Avs had their 48 point season, but they were 7-2 in OT. They had a league low amount of games that went to OT, so had they gone more often, they may have lost more. They started the season 9-9-0 before the wheels blew up at Thanksgiving, but only 3 of those OT wins came in the first 18 games. Even when they lost every game after that, they still managed to go 4-2 in OT.
ROW was a holdover was from 4v4 OT. That's even different than normal 5v5 play, but it's at least closer to it. Finally the league made the first tie breaker reg wins only. Took too many years to do it.
NHL Hockey Standings
You look at the RW wins, the Kings have 6, and they're down where they should be. A little more separation there. In terms of points in regulation, the Kings are currently only ahead of Det.
ROW was actually a newer stat that came into play with the shootout. Owners wanted a win in regulation/overtime to be worth slightly more than a shootout. I believe the first tie breaker for the playoffs is actually ROW, not regulation wins.
