There is, but hope isn't a strategy. Trying to catch lightning in a bottle by throwing two Michael Leighton's at the problem isn't a solution, it's desperation. It's clearly much more reliable to have a decently-paid top-tier starter instead of cycling through journeymen and hoping one sticks.

I think the idea is that it's easier to cycle through journeymen or young up-and-comers in the hopes you catch lightning in a bottle than be saddled with a huge cap hit at the goaltending position.

I don't necessarily believe that's correct, but it has become the prevailing mindset for a lot of teams.

I agree, we've seen it. I just totally disagree with the philosophy. But i'm biased because we've had Quick and we've knife-thru-hot-butter'ed so many 1B goalies because of it. How many great teams had an achilles heel in net? Niemi, Elliot, Hiller gave way to Gibson, Luongo gave way to Schneider... I guess it's not really proveable but I feel like a team does so much better when one guy is THE guy. There was a never a question whether they'd go to the backup with the Kings.

But on the flipside, I also feel it's foolish to spend 10m on a G, so maybe that's where some of it is coming from.

Goaltending is one of the most difficult positions to fill in all of pro sports. I suppose the closest comparable would be the pitching position in baseball.

It's f***ing glorious

Close the window on your way out, Matt. Oh wait, you won't have to, it was barely even open.

I know everyone hates Tkachuk and I am in the minority of non-Calgary fans that likes him, but I see a guy that really wants to win and is extremely frustrated that he can't be out there. While he might be wrong, I can guarantee that he thinks they win the series if he was in he lineup. That's the kind of guys you want on your team. He puts himself out there and, as much as everyone here would like to say he's a p***y, he'll take his medicine.

Sure, he turtled with Kassian but then he fought him no questions asked next time they played. Not a lot of 30 goal, almost PPG guys fighting someone like Kassian. He goes after Doughty because he doesn't respect Doughty's game RE: backing up his mouth and he doesn't respect the Kings ability to step up and do anything about it. I can't hate him because of the Doughty thing because Tkachuk has been 100% right on both accounts.

I get hating him because you think he's dirty and, let's face it, he does dirty stuff with that elbow to Doughty being pretty ridiculous. I do think that there is a misconception about his overall game though because of the hatred. He is a classic "He's your favorite player if he's on your team" type of guy and he's box office: games are just simply more entertaining when he's out there. Home games against Calgary usurped games against the Ducks as kind of the only "can't miss" games during the last couple of seasons and it is pretty much entirely because of him.

That said, I completely understand the joy most of you get from the gif. It's great. I just like having him in the playoffs because he makes things more fun. Unfortunately, that means Calgary has to win so that's a bit of a problem.

I agree with you for the most part. Tkachuk is a player fans of opposing teams love to hate. Wish the Kings had a player like him, much like I wished the Kings had one like Corey Perry 10 years ago.

I am not a fan of how Doughty handles his business, but since he is Tkachuk's main foil on the Kings I went with it. Doughty's problem in the near future may be becoming irrelevant to Tkachuk.

That's what I mean. They keep grabbing cast offs and headcases. Talbot? The guy that couldn't make it on the Oilers?
Watching them makes me really appreciate what Lombardi did here. Not just with the goaltending, but actually building a team

I'll never forget our rotating goalie mess under Taylor
Fiset
Storr
Legace- who they just let walk
Bach
Potvin
Passmore
Huet
Cechmanek
GuadaLaBarbera
Garon

then in the early Deano years
Cloutier &Burke

Someone on the main board mentioned he'd be the next C and I could see him growing up a lot if that's the case. He wouldn't just be responsible for his own shenanigans but also the welfare of his team, so he'd likely stop the late hits and bench spears.

I've been open that I'm a bit biased since his dad is my all-time favorite player. Keith was tougher but he did all kinds of cheap shit as well. Cue up the "I learned it from watching you, Dad! I learned it from watching you".

I was at this game in Anaheim. Selanne coming in on an empty net to ice the game. Notice Tkachuk without a stick: it's because he threw it at Selanne from behind already. Selanne scores and Tkachuk flat out tackles him. As a Duck-hater and Tkachuk fan, it was awesome to be there. My dad wasn't a hockey fan but he went with me to this game...I told him Tkachuk was going to do something once the puck left the Anaheim zone and he did not disappoint.

This is completely something Matthew would do: take a run at the other team's best player, draw a retaliatory penalty and then act like he wants a piece of a Top 5 fighter in the league. This would be like if Matthew acted like he wanted to fight MacDermid once the refs were in. Not Keith's best look but, at the same time, you know you are risking your life if you want to run Gretzky like that and he went ahead and did it: something Matthew also doesn't care about.

I can't find the video on YT but Keith actually received a major and a game for spearing Probert while Keith was on the ice and Probert was on the bench. So, again, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Keith didn't really settle down after being given the C in Winnipeg: it just took age and the maturity that goes with it. It kind of took him like seven seasons to do so plus coaches finally getting through to him that 52 goals is nice but maybe you could have 60+ if you weren't in the box for 229 minutes.

I mean, Keith had been in the league for 10 years and he was still pulling off shit like this in the WCF, which is awesome, but its the kind of thing that would meltdown the Main Board today if Matthew did it:

I don't remember the Red Wing player who had hit Gretzky, but the story goes McSorely told Yzerman, "If so-and-so hits Gretz again, I'm going to break your f'ing arm." Gretzky wasn't touched the rest of the game.

I agree. I hate him but I love him if he is on LA. Know how Coyote and a few other teams fans feel about Dustin Brown.

we could use someone with a little bit of spark. Doughty and Quick used to have it, think it is still smoldering inside. Brownie used to let his play and massive hits spark the team. Lappy and early Cliffy were gamers.

LA could use some talented grit/agitator.

I dunno man. There are guys that do it to spark the team, and guys that do it to appease themselves. Tkachuk spearing someone leaving the rink doesn't have anything to do with sparking the team. Nor does elbowing Carter in the face for no reason, elbowing Doughty in the face because he doesn't like being checked (though I'd actually chalk the last one up to that competitiveness). Tkachuk blindside running an engaged opponent three times in one game isn't desire to win, it's spot picking. All the slewfooting, etc.

I can't compare him to Brown, Clifford, Lappy. Brown's maybe the closest because he's on the edge, but I've never looked at any of those guys and gone 'man, that was selfish,' or even anything really outside the flow of play. Tkachuk takes himself out of the game to do dirty shit, often hurting his team in the process.

We had that guy, his name was Sean Avery.

Milbury isn't doing the color on the Habs Flyers game,NHL was not happy with his comments and as a result, NBC pulled him.
THey need to fire him, enough is enough.
He adds nothing, clueless, useless, waste of space
He can go back to his cave

I'll believe the NHL is truly aggrieved when I see the ice girls dressed up like nuns and the whole group becomes equally M/F/Other. Until then, NHL PR should STFU -- this virtue signally shit is totally out of control.

Looks like there won't be any repeat for the Blues. Yes, they're missing some key guys , but man, Binnington has been awful. 4 more goals and got pulled in the 2nd.

Milbury, whose been an ignorant jackass for years, did it again last night, during the Isles Caps game

Video: Mike Milbury is under fire AGAIN for on-air comments about 'distracting women'

Mike Milbury has been under fire, for what feels like these entire playoffs as the NBC analyst can't seem to say the right things at the right time. From calling players out for faking injuries to now this, Milbury may be looking for work next season.
During the Capitals and Islanders game 5 broadcast, the discussion got into how great the NHL bubble is for the players, and leave it to Mike Milbury to go here....

Plenty of capable , intelligent analysts out there. They don't need him....he's awful.

Feel badly that Forslund and Boosh are stuck with him.

He's getting destroyed on social media. Time to fire his "stuck in the old boys dinosaur mentality" out of hockey.
