Speaking of being publicly brash, whoa, that statement from the Coyotes:

"John Chayka has quit as the General Manager and President of Hockey Operations of the Arizona Coyotes.

"The Club is disappointed in his actions and his timing as the Coyotes prepare to enter the NHL's hub city of Edmonton, where the team will begin post-season play for the first time since 2012. Chayka has chosen to quit on a strong and competitive team, a dedicated staff, and the Arizona Coyotes fans, the greatest fans in the NHL. "

NHL source: ‘John Chayka is a liar and a quitter’

Chayka throws the ball back at the end, but what a circus.

Wow. You almost never see official statements like this.

is that kosher, to comment on someone you terminate? i thought you were supposed to just leave it at "they're no longer employed here"

and hell, you can't really act surprised when you deny another team permission to speak with the guy. you just gave him all the ammunition he needs to walk out. at least chayka put out a professional statement instead of sinking to their level

I'd have to see it to be able to comment more but that's the court equivalent of a ref missing a hook and calling another one later, or everyone on the freeway passing you while you get cited for speeding. You're not going to be able to make much of a case over "but so and so got away with it" when the precedent for punishment exists.
You can make that case as not being treated fairly under labor laws. If you're being choosy on who you punish in your HR department, you leave yourself open to a dispute like this. It's not like a moving violation. That's just silly. NBC likely would win a trial, but the question is whether they want to go to trial over it and make it a headline. I think they'll settle to put the matter to rest. It's likely cheaper to do it and they'd be able to muzzle Roenick.

Oh it's within the SAME company? Then yeah that's an issue.

They didn’t terminate him, he quit.

er yeah, i just mean someone who doesn't work for you any more

force of habit, basically everyone that left my old job was a term
Heh yeah it’s unusual but I guess they’re pretty pissed he just peaced out on them. Don’t imagine he’ll be getting another GM shot any time soon.

Beyond the whole drama filled exit, he has just done an absolute shit job as a GM.

In his 4 drafts since he took over in 2016 the Coyotes ended up with Clayton Keller, Jacob Chychrun, PO Joseph, Barret Hayton and Filip Westerlund in the first 2 rounds. They also traded a 7th overall pick for Derek Stepan and Raanta. During that span they were the 5th worst team in the league and there is not a whole lot in the cupboard to show for it. They traded a 1st and a 3rd for Taylor Hall on December 16th and the team proceeded to post a .457 points percentage which was 27th in the league, just behind the mighty Kings who had a .471 points percentage. To top it all off the team is in possibly the worst cap situation with an aging D core, which is supposed to be their strength.

It's actually a pretty rough situation for Arizona and I don't envy Sullivan or whoever comes next as GM.

There's two separate issues there. The first is his remarks re: Tappen, which is an open-and-shut case for any HR department re: hostile work environment no matter what their friendship status. Good luck fighting that, just totally insane.

The second is his boss being a douche about politics, that's a no-go area too.

Odds are he ends up canned anyway and wins some settlement on the boss' political bashing, doesn't matter what your poliitcal viewpoints are, you can't make your workplace tougher for your employees. It was more than just 'don't go speak there.' It was actively making the office a shit environment for JR's political affiliation.

It sounds like he's trying to justify his comment about his co-workers and claiming they were ok because "whataboutism" , and the real reason for termination were political. His comments alone were a reason to be fired in any job. There's no way all of them could work a broadcast together without it being completely uncomfortable. What sucks is now is tappen, sharp and carter will get dragged along with him as long as it goes on.

Hard to believe they're capped out, and the only player I can name is Hall.

Didn't he just sign an extension last year? I can imagine that ruffling feathers.

Yotes fans seem to be clamoring for a lot of ex-Kings (Futa, Lombardi, Hextall) to replace Sullivan.

Can’t imagine Lombardi wanting to deal with a meddling owner who has his son sitting in hockey ops. Futa’s always been the bridesmaid, but this could be a good opportunity for him.
