Around the League 2018-2019 Part 3

I think Quick's $7 million salary this coming year is a killer and when added to his 4 year cap hit and poor play last year makes him very difficult to move. If he doesn't improve in 19-20 I see him as a potential buyout candidate for LA.

I don’t see him being bought out regardless of how this season goes for him.

After this season, his remaining salary is very palatable for the final three years of his deal ($3.5 million, $3 million and $2.5 million in the final year).

Kings are fine going forward cap wise with guys coming of the books next offseason and as it stands, no high end RFA’s to resign at that point. No need to buy him out. They can easily absorb his cap number for the next 3 years if they have to.

I think Campbell is playing his last season in LA. He will be dealt or end up walking next off-season and I’m fine with the Kings going with a Quick/Petersen tandem beginning next season.

I get the Neal/Lucic trade from both sides. I think that right now Neal has the higher ceiling but he also has the way lower floor.

Lucic probably won't get much worse (or better) than he already is over the life of this, and atleast can be a serviceable 4th line player providing some toughness if nothing else. Neal may recover and bounce back to a 20+ goal guy, but if he's as awful as he was last year he will be playing in Bakersfield. His situation reminds me of Richards going into 14-15 season.

Totally agree if Quick has a rebound season. If not then they have some interesting decisions to make regarding Quick and Campbell. Especially if Peterson spends most/all of 19-20 in Ontario.

Source(s) of rumor?

On the surface it makes no sense from a CBJ perspective as they are as close to winning the SC in the next 3-4 years as the Kings are. Why would they do it unless they were the were getting a sweetener from the Kings to take Quick?

It's not about the Cup necessarily for Columbus, making the playoffs is super important as they need to for a +NOI. Quick is cheap for a goalie that could help them towards that goal, so interest wouldn't be surprising.

As others have said, Quick needs to prove that last year was a fluke. No team in their right mind would take on $7 million this year and a 4 year cap hit of $5.8 million for a rapidly declining goaltender. If their goal is to make the playoffs, last year's version of Quick will not get them closer to that goal.

With how awful Los Angeles was this past year, and how deep Columbus’ blue line is, Quick might be worth the risk regardless. Especially if he can be had for cheap and possibly with retention. Columbus has only Werenski to re-sign with $16 million in cap space and no huge RFAs coming next year either.

And if Wennberg is headed to LA, it might be even better. If LA retained $450,000, they would have the same cap hit and same term.

Neither Wennberg nor Quick have no movement clauses, so both could be exposed in the draft. Columbus could protect one of their young goalies, LA could re-sign Campbell and expose him in the draft.

Could be a win-win.

That Lucic trade makes ZERO sense for the Flames. Even if you think both players are equally crap (which I don't and think Neal has the much better chance of rebounding), Lucic having to be protected at the Seattle expansion draft AND Neal's deal being buyoutable makes this completely lopsided in Edmonton's favor. I would be furious with that deal if I was a Calgary fan.

except it sure sounds like Neal is putting in the work to ensure that last year was a blip on his career resume.

Neal is coming off 1 down year with a team he never was invested in. A lot of that is on him but I think we look back at this deal and wonder what the hell Calgary was thinking.

It fell apart for Neal last year, but there were signs in the previous two years. As far as the workout stuff, we've heard it before (again Richards), the reality is it's tough for some guys at this age.

I believe that Lucic and the Flames have some kind of handshake agreement when it comes to expansion.

He will waive and Seattle will not choose him, very little risk for Lucic. He has almost zero chance of being a top 6 player in the league, but he should be able to hang on as a tough guy with decent enough hands.

Even with a handshake deal, it's less certain than Neal's status.

I don't remember Richards working with Gary Roberts, I just remember him hiring a nutritionist. Also a lot of the rumors of him being more dedicated in the offseason came from DL and the Kings PR not Ricahrds. With Neal it is him saying he needs to be better and get his game back.

Forbort extension would not be the worst thing depending on term and money.

If he was in the 2nd pair I think we all would appreciate him more

I really don't think he would work better on the 2nd pair. He ideally would play a more modern Matt Greene role, as a 3rd pairing guy that plays heavy PK minutes and has a puck moving partner. His inability to move the puck means he is a complete liability to have on the ice in all 3 zones. He can't beat a forecheck and offensive zone time dies when the puck hits his stick. He does have good defensive instincts and is adept at the pokecheck, but you can't have a guy that limited in your top 4.

Forbort is barely an NHLer at this point. 6'4", 27 years old threw 105 hits, a career low, in 81 games played. He's scored 6 goals for his career in 255 game played, all at even strength, a 2.2 shooting percentage, he took 75 shots last season-a career low discounting his first season where he played 14 games. His 2.7 shooting percentage last season was a career high. Hs 183 shot attempts were a career low. His 20:45 ice time was 2 seconds off his career high. He had 139 blocks-a career low-you sensing a theme yet? His 105 hits were a career low. He had 15 takeaways while giving away the puck 78 times. The guy is just a dreadful hockey player. He's this era's Tim Watters who was best known for his ability to fall on the puck and get a whistle so he could get off the ice. IMO, the only reason why Forbort is in the NHL right now is due solely to where he was drafted. He should wear a bandit mask on the ice cause he's robbing the Kings of his salary.

I'm more and more tempted to subscribe to the Athletic if only because they have a lot on hockey.

honestly best hockey articles i have been able to find. subscribed three months ago and have loved it. I am looking forward to seeing what their regular season coverage looks like!
