For all the hype around the TML this year, they are one Freddy Anderson injury away from some serious concerns on D. Throw in the Nylander holdout and their upcoming cap crunch and it makes for interesting off ice stories for that team.

Frankly they have concerns on D anyway. Rielly is a low-end #1...and if he got hurt, they'd be utterly boned. If I showed you this defense:

Gardiner-Hainsey
Zaitsev-Dermott
Marincin-Ozhiganov

Would you call it a playoff team?

Tavares and Matthews and the young offense makes them a high octane dangerous team but a totally fallible one. They're a contender but no matter what the chest thumping that defense is a fatal flaw if Andersen can't keep up insane numbers.

This is why I see Voynov and the leafs as a good fit.

I see Voynov and the Isles as also a good fit.

A mid level contract has to go because of the cap crunch in 2019-2020. The Kings would have Brickley, Rempal, Kempe, and Iafallo as RFAs. I say a Phaneuf because I don't think one of Muzzin/Martinez is enough cleared salary even though Muzzin/Martinez would be easier to trade. A forward opens another hole that has to be filled. Defense is a stength with guys in the pipeline.

Rumor has it Voynov doesn't want to return to the Kings. Voynov's rights or a signed voynov to the Isles for futures in season. At the end of the season, those futures back to the Isles as part of a Phaneuf cap dump.

Immediately, the Isles defense gets remade into respectability. There is a large Russian community in New York so that helps. And it's New York. Plus as a Russian, Voynov could be used to help entice Panarin to sign as a UFA. We saw the Bolts use their two Russians to recruit Panarin. NY is on Panarin's rumored list.

If Panarin signs, it helps the Isles since they get overhauled for no assets out, just cap space. Everyone wins.

Who knows what is going to happen with Voynov, but if it drags out until mid season, it probably increases his value a little bit. Teams have more cap space banked and know where they stand. The Kings could probably get a pretty good return from a team with aspirations if he doesn't stick around.

I think best hope is a trade for draft picks with a bunch of conditions changing the pick LA receives

Still could see Florida being interested. Dale Tallon's taken some chances on guys before (ie, Mike Hoffman this year, a draft pick like Kyle Beach) with varying degrees of success. Panthers have quietly built some nice depth at forward but really could use an upgrade at RD behind Aaron Ekblad. The Florida press is mild compared to Toronto/NY if Voynov were brought into town.

Maybe a prospect and a conditional 2020 pick based on games played?

Once again TSN over-hypes their Canadian teams, but first they tear them down, pointing out the major issues [CAL, EDM] only to follow it up by say both will definitely make the playoffs. The Oilers are not finishing 4th, and the Flames aren't finishing 3rd because every other year the do.

Take away most teams number one defenseman and they would be f***ed.

Travis Dermott will turn out to be a real solid player on the backend for them. Do they need another piece? Yup, especially if Zaitsev cannot return to his rookie form, he was dogshit most nights last season.

What's wrong with Ron Hainsey? :sarcasm: The Pens won a Cup in 2016 with him as part of their defense core and that was a pretty brutal one at that. Pretty sure Letang missed half the year including playoffs to boot.

The Ron Hainsey Factor, don't sleep on it!

Leafs lost all their goalie depth today.

They'll probably end up reclaiming at least one of Pickard/McElhinney when Neuvirth/Darling get healthy in 4-6 weeks. It might only be a temporary situation. And if they really were in a pinch, there are a few goalies available on the street.

My point was more even with Reilly that's not a good defense no matter how often it gets pointed at. Dermott I like too. But the rest are different shades of dog poop, and Hainsey has one foot in the grave. He might be sleeping on himself even more than we are :sarcasm:

I guess the question is "is it enough?" and it very well MIGHT be with that offense and if Andersen can sustain a high level of play without dying. But the idea that they're a complete and flawless team seems to be taking root.

it's BS the NHLPA will likely appeal the Wilson suspension. 20 games is just, and the PA should be looking out for the Blue player too.

i already hope it is no 3 point game

I hate three point games when a win is 2 points and a loss is 0. One of the dumbest things in any sports league on the planet.

Should be 3 win
2 shootout/ot win
1 shootout/ot loss
0 loss.

3 points total awarded every game. So simple.

They actually double-screwed the Blues, too...because the player that got hurt was slated to be sent down, but instead has to stay up on IR, so they had to waive Jaskin for cap reasons...and the Capitals picked him up

Toronto being outshot after 2 periods vs rebuilding Montreal. Montreal also looks more physical and structured.
I expect the Leafs to win but that defense with goaltending doesn't strike me Stanley cup contender.

I mean, Hainesy-Gardiner as a top defensive pairing? Meanwhile we are complaining about our defense (me included), lol.
