And the Canadiens will pay something close to that, for a few reasons. One, goalie markets are usually a little light. Two, if you trade him, the other team knows full well what the contract situation is, which decreases his value for Montreal. Three, he's sort of the face of the franchise.

Price has the leverage, and will most likely get closer to what he wants than not. The other option is either trading him for probably less than he's worth, or watching him walk away, and being the team that let Price get away. Montreal already did that in a way once with Roy, and it took them 10 years before they found Price to replace him.

Teams hold onto any sort of competitiveness that they can, for as long as they can.

...and Montreal will never win jack if they give Price eight years and $80M. Hoping some GM will summon the courage to say no to this insanity.

Montreal hasn't won a cup since 1993. In Montreal they call that losing. Montreal has never won with Price. They can condemn themselves to the black hole by giving Price stupid money, or they can try a new approach.

Burnside as well. Buccigross also.

They are dumping their hockey guys. Probably bring in a couple HF posters for $20k a year to replace them since they don't care about hockey.

Buccigross not gone...yet. Good reporter.

Marisa Guthrie‏Verified account @MarisaGuthrie

Sources now saying #JohnBuccigross not gone, but will not say if his contract, up this summer, renewed or reduced .

not just hockey...they cut a good veteran reporter a day before the NFL draft

After 17 years reporting on #NFL, I've been informed that I'm being laid off by ESPN effective immediately. I have no plans to retire

unfortunate for the reporters caught in the crossfire but nothing makes me happier than watching espn fail

the content in general on that network has tanked so badly in the last 5 years it's almost incomprehensible

I'm pretty sure we basically agree on what GM's should do. Where we differ is maybe you're waiting for GM's to do it, and I'm not. GM's can't get out of their own way, and I don't expect that to change. Look at Sather. Smart in Edmonton with no money, drunk sailor in NY before the cap. With the cap, every GM needs to act like he's in a small market. The problem with that is there's a glut of small market thinking GM's now, and they're mostly all trying to get the best bang for their buck all the time. Which, to me means, not trading Kopitar in June 2015, but in June 2014, when he had an additional year on his contract at a great cap hit, coming off the Cup high possibly inflating his value, and coming off a solid regular season. All of those reasons are also why you'd have to be a crazy GM to trade Kopitar in June 2014.

It's a risk either way. It's the bird in the hand theory. They have Price now, and can at least have him 4+ years from now. They don't know who they will or won't have if they trade Price. Will they find another goalie good enough? Can they build a good enough team around a goalie to minimize the need for a goalie to be great all the time? How long does that take?

My only reason to watch ESPN is college football, and an NFL game once in a while.

The broadcasts for these two sports are so generic it doesn't matter to me which network is broadcasting them. When it comes to college football all I am looking for when watching a game are the best match ups.

Long overdue. Burnside STINKS.

Not a fan either.

Just found it unsurprising that they canned their two highest profile NHL writers (I don't count Buccigross).

Jayson Stark is a big one to be let go as well.

I feel like they will bring in young (see: cheap) writers with a heavy interest in analytics etc.

They're losing viewers big time. Their ratings and income dropped drastically last year. Turns out when someone turns on a sports network they don't want to be lectured about politics. ESPN can't help themselves, they just have to throw politics into everything. Caitlyn Jenner getting a courage award was the match that ignited it all.

Now all they can do is cut, cut, cut. They're going after the weakest parts first and hockey is one of them. Their NASCAR contract ended a few years ago and NBC bought it outright. Now it's split between FS1 and NBCSN and both offer vastly superior coverage, especially FS1. NBC in particular destroyed ESPN's offer.

ESPN only cares about baseball, football, basketball, and wife beaters. Their coverage is absolutely dreadful. I've never been an ESPN fan, but over the last few years it's become unwatchable. MNF in particular is such a bush league production. SNF is a vastly superior production.

NBC will pick up Pierre LeBrun.

Already notified. I have leverage and am asking for 8 years and $100K a season.

KingsHockey24's contract is up in 2020. You're asking for too much. You've been traded to Deadspin.

ESPN losing NASCAR is probably a blessing in disguise for them.

The average NASCAR race pulls in better ratings than the SCF. It's the biggest driver (no pun intended) of NBC and FS1 ratings. ESPN couldn't pull the trigger on the deal because the money wasn't available.

But what are those ratings? NASCAR viewership has been declining tremendously.

I'm not a NASCAR basher. Grew up watching it. Was at The Winston in 1992 for the first all-star race at night when Davey Allison won and then crashed hard and had to be airlifted out of there. Awesome seats.

I rarely watch anymore though and it gets less and less every year. I'll catch the races at Daytona, Bristol and Talladega but that is usually it.

They are in for a tough time with Jr. retiring. Desperately in need of a superstar.

Sounds like Kucherov is talking about the Kings.

http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/lightning/nikita-kucherov-with-harsh-words-for-lightning/2321702
"Some guys overstayed in team," Kucherov told Sovietsy Sport, per translation. "They've got their money and stopped working. They knew there's no competition for their positions and the organization is not going to take someone else. They played not really well this year. You can see it in their stats and way of play. When we played together and I made a pass, they even were not expecting this. That's why this season was hard for me despite good stats."

Wait, I thought TB was the model organization, and everything was rosy?

They're still better at drafting and developing offensive talent than the Kings have been.

Kucherov, Johnson, Palat, Drouin, Killorn, Namestnikov. Stamkos was a no brainer and #1 pick so I'll leave him out of that group. And without Stamkos, that's six talented names right there.

Their entire top six is homegrown. Compare that to the Kings, where the only top six players under Lombardi's to establish themselves as top six forwards are limited to two names: Toffoli and Pearson.

Do you try to be this dense on purpose?

I don't know for certain but I'd be willing to bet that in the last 30 years 0 Stanley Cup champs drafted their entire top 6, so one could argue that attempting to do so is a losing strategy.

They have the assets now to move any one or a few of them to make upgrades elsewhere, as Yzerman has talked about doing on their blueline, and we hope that the Kings are involved in trade discussions to acquire one of those forwards.

The Kings did that by turning O'Sullivan to Williams, then Johnson to Carter, transactions that are both over five years ago.

Now imagine if the Kings had the luxury of being able to draft and develop that many skilled forwards. I don't think anyone would be dissatisfied by that, and it would greatly address an area they are sorely lacking in.

He has every right to be frustrated, from the All star break on, he (and Hedman) were the only players who were putting it on the line. He put up a ridiculous amount of goals and pts going down the stretch, trying to drag them on his back into the playoffs and it almost worked But far too often, he got no help. So I get his being pissed.
ANd I still think some of the players have issues with Cooper

It's definitely declining, but unfortunately lots of sports ratings are declining. I think the UFC is the only sport that has seen a progressive growth trajectory. But it's a new sport and will inevitably hit the same wall.

Motorsports as a whole are losing ratings because it's such a niche sport, especially among younger viewers.

Racing is my favorite sport and NASCAR is my favorite form of racing. I have no complaints with the sport, but I can get how the casual fan doesn't want to tune in for 500 miles of racing. The stages have added a lot more excitement. I didn't care for it at first, but it's definitely made every lap important.

Lots of new talent - Elliot, Blaney, Larson, Dillion brothers, etc. Chase will be the next face of the series.

Yeah he did have some pointed words towards Cooper as well. Seems like a lot of Lightning fans don't think too highly of him as well.

Yeah, he's really polarizing based on everything I've heard/read. He's also a very grating person to listen to.

Hi all, one day late to the discussion.

Regarding Tavares, I think it's possible that the Kings try to go after him during the summer of 2018 if he makes it unsigned that far. I've been mentioning it for about 6 months here. Glad to see I was not the only one thinking that.

I've been posting about the Kings going on a top heavy Blackhawk model for a few months. The kings don't have the assets for a trade unless it's a shattenkirk type deal where minimal assets go back.

Get Tavares as a 2C. Move Carter to wing for Kopitar. trade or cap dump Gaborik or as last resort, buy him out which hurts but costs no assets or if he can't be reasonably traded.

The kings could have about $9 million in cap space. Maybe $10 million if that March Daly cap report is accurate. And that is Tavares contract territory.

Greene is off the cap. Nolan is off the cap. Gaborik gone. $2.5-$3 million from that Daly report. One of Lewis or McNabb taken by vegas.

Greene $2.5
Nolan $.95
Vegas takes a player $1.7-$2
Daly cap increase $2.5
Trade clifford $1.6
Total = $9.25-$9.55

Trade/pay vegas to take/BO Gaborik. $3.3 (in place of vegas selecting someone else)

Total = just under $11 million. Trade one of Muzzin/Martinez if necessary.

Kings back in it in blackhawk mode.

So first round exit, lower draft pick while still having cap problems? :sarcasm:

Kings will always be close to the cap. too many long term contracts. The kings have to do something significant or doughty is gone in 2 years.

And people wanted to know why the kings were mentioned with Tavares. I provided an answer how it could be done even with the current cap issues. ;) With minimal assets leaving no less.

The RFA numbers I provided weren't mine by the way.
