And the Canadiens will pay something close to that, for a few reasons. One, goalie markets are usually a little light. Two, if you trade him, the other team knows full well what the contract situation is, which decreases his value for Montreal. Three, he's sort of the face of the franchise.
Price has the leverage, and will most likely get closer to what he wants than not. The other option is either trading him for probably less than he's worth, or watching him walk away, and being the team that let Price get away. Montreal already did that in a way once with Roy, and it took them 10 years before they found Price to replace him.
Teams hold onto any sort of competitiveness that they can, for as long as they can.
...and Montreal will never win jack if they give Price eight years and $80M. Hoping some GM will summon the courage to say no to this insanity.
Montreal hasn't won a cup since 1993. In Montreal they call that losing. Montreal has never won with Price. They can condemn themselves to the black hole by giving Price stupid money, or they can try a new approach.
