30 Thoughts: Islanders working hard on John Tavares extension pitch

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-islanders-working-hard-john-tavares-extension-pitch/

20. Los Angeles reached out to University of Denver head coach Jim Montgomery about joining John Stevens on the bench. That won’t happen, but it gives you an idea into what they are thinking. There are rumblings Montgomery will meet with Florida this week. Very serious candidate. Dave Hakstol set a high bar when he left North Dakota for about $2 million per season in Philadelphia. That might be what it takes to get Montgomery.

He is a legit HC candidate and as I mentioned in another thread, I would not be surprised to see him behind a bench as an HC come next season.

What's with Friedman mentioning the Kings keeping an eye on Tavares? Can't imagine the Kings could possibly acquire Tavares and then re-sign him while keeping in mind Doughty will have to be re-signed the year after. Kopitar at $10 million, Tavares at $8 million and Doughty at $11-12 million? No way.

I think every team in the league is keeping an eye on him. Not really a bold prediction.

Add 50% to this figure and you have what they will be eating up in 2019-20. The cap will have likely increased by only 8-10% at most.

The Kings and Blackhawks both had choices. They had already won multiple cups. Both GMs failed to recognize the odds of winning another while paying players approaching the end of their prime years big money were extremely unlikely.

You don't HAVE to pay outrageous amounts for past performance and success. Handing out the Kane/Toews, and what will ultimately be the Kopitar/Doughty contracts had no effect on the winning of the cups.

Anaheim is much better positioned than the Kings or Blackhawks going forward, but it still might not be enough, because Edmonton kept getting low cost, talented players by sucking for so long.

I agree, nobody has to, but they do. It's just up to Kopitar to not be outscored by a 36 year old Zetterberg.

Every team is bound by the cap. The team trading for Kopitar isn't going to give you full value, because if they're trading for him, they're trying to win now, and they have to sign him themselves, with the risk that he walks away. There's no guarantee that you find a younger #1 center quickly. It might take you a decade to find him in the draft. Still have to spend the money, and who is out there is free agency? What assets do you have to trade to bring someone in? If you're not a true contender with Kopitar, and not a true contender without Kopitar, what's the difference?

Well he does mention them specifically. LA just on Friedman's mind? It's not like the Kings have the assets or cap space to fit him. LA has to be one of the 5 worst fits in the NHL when you consider all that.

Teams get desperate. How long has Nashville, Montreal, Columbus been wanting a 1C? It's how trades with big name players happen.

The difference is you haven't wasted 8 years being a pretender with Kopitar on the roster.

How? By trading Doughty for him?!

You'd have to trade a bunch of the middle class to do it. Toffoli, Pearson, Muzzin. Certainly a multi-player/contract deal, and maybe even somehow a multi-team deal. Which is why, more likely then not, the Islanders will get him signed. Not many teams can take on a soon to be highly paid UFA. When teams try to position themselves to be able to sign a big UFA a year or two out, most of the time they probably don't get them. One of the famous examples is the Orlando Magic and Tim Duncan. The Islanders should have plenty of cap space to sign him. Building teams have their own guys to sign too.

You wanted Kopitar dealt after 14-15. Johansen was still on Columbus, who was supposed to be their franchise center at the time. Nashville still had Weber and Jones, you probably don't want Weber's contract, and Poile doesn't seem like the Jones for Kopitar type. Montreal had the 2nd best record in the league, and they probably don't give you Galchenyuk, or Subban, and they didn't have Sergachev yet.

The difference is you haven't wasted 8 years being a pretender with Kopitar on the roster.

Instead 8 years get wasted pretending that you're rebuilding into a contender, but you really won't be unless you get lucky and get the right player in the right draft. Or, you're terrible, but some other team wins the lottery, and they get the next Patrick Kane, while you don't.

Jeez think our injuries were bad?

San Jose Sharks center Logan Couture played in the postseason despite two fractures in his face, along with the plastic and wiring in his mouth that kept his teeth in place.

Among other injured players for San Jose were forward Patrick Marleau (broken left thumb), forward Tomas Hertl (broken foot), and forward Joonas Donskoi (separated shoulder).

Of course there was Thornton's torn MCL/ACL too.

Damn, didn't realize Dustin Brown caused so much damage.

Couture made his injuries worse when he took the cage off after 1 game, then got hit in the mouth with a stick causing more damage and lost a few teeth. Not the smartest guy in the room.

Meh, hard to say how bad most teams injuries are after the playoffs. As most teams don't publicize it after. Wonder if they Sharks are doing it as a way of deflecting from an underwhelming season. (Though the Thornton/Couture stuff was already known, just to not to what severity)

Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet 960 on the Montreal Canadiens and Carey Price.

“I think you have to expect it’s going to cost you 10 X 8, right?” Friedman asserted. “Why would you expect anything different. And if it’s different, it’s close. Whatever it is, it’s big. But I think you go into it expecting he’s going to want 10 X 8.

That's nuts. I get that he means that the 'asking' price and the 'negotiated ' price are 2 different numbers but I can't get a goalie asking for 10M out of my head.

And again, that sort of boxes them in, they have defense issues and are weak down the middle, they need at least one legit #1 center and they don't come cheap. And Radulov wants an LTC.

Unless they build the right team around him, that 10M goalie will be playing golf every April

And the Canadiens will pay something close to that, for a few reasons. One, goalie markets are usually a little light. Two, if you trade him, the other team knows full well what the contract situation is, which decreases his value for Montreal. Three, he's sort of the face of the franchise.

Price has the leverage, and will most likely get closer to what he wants than not. The other option is either trading him for probably less than he's worth, or watching him walk away, and being the team that let Price get away. Montreal already did that in a way once with Roy, and it took them 10 years before they found Price to replace him.

Teams hold onto any sort of competitiveness that they can, for as long as they can.

Burnside as well. Buccigross also.

They are dumping their hockey guys. Probably bring in a couple HF posters for $20k a year to replace them since they don't care about hockey.

Already notified. I have leverage and am asking for 8 years and $100K a season.
