I know Vegas has a ton of moves coming after all is said and done but, in a vacuum, does Emelin make McNabb redundant?

Also, it feels like Blake is sitting here with his thumb up his ass while everyone else gets rid of bad contracts. I'm not knocking him because the Kings are in a tough position with a lack of assets to move along with bad money but, **** man, why should we be excited about this upcoming season other than everyone is technically a contender until the puck drops? Blake is going to have to pull some surprising stuff because there doesn't seem to be a clear path to improving this team next season.

Could say the same about the selections of Haula, Karlsson and even Eakin, seems to make a guy like Lewis redundant for Vegas.

Methot could be flipped and McPhee mentioned they were going to claim a bunch of defenseman so it doesn't rule out McNabb yet.

Surprised they went with Emelin. I think Hudon would have been a better call but who knows if they didn't work out something with the Habs we just have yet to hear about.

Also, apparently Methot has the Leafs on his no trade list from some discussions on the main board. Did not know that. Would obviously have to waive if this was the case should the Leafs have interest in acquiring him.

You answered your own question, he has Dean to thank for putting him in this predicament, if they hadn't traded 4 of their last 6 first round picks, maybe could have made a move to shed Brown or Gaborik's money, but they are in such desperate need of young talent that they have to keep #11, maybe even trade down to add an additional 2nd rounder.

Are any of those contracts for 4 or 5 years, for guys in their 30's, that are fully expected to play for the duration of the contracts? What are the comparable contracts Vegas has taken on? And Blake could possibly move them, but do you want to give up 2 or 3 picks in the 1st round over the next 3 to 5 years? Maybe even a prospect on top of that?

Brown and Gaborik are not cap dumps. Those kinds of contracts have 1 year left on them. Or the guy is so hurt, that he's not going to play again.

I said I'm not knocking him and if his thumb is up his ass it is because he has no other choice, outside of blowing it up which we know they aren't going to do.

Main point of the post was just a big "sigh" for this upcoming season. This is a time where hope springs eternal so I'm sure most of us have moments where we are like "This could maybe happen and then this and things could be great" but then our brain takes over and reminds us that our current position is total garbage.

I'm not even going to be mad at Blake if he can't seriously upgrade the roster. I'm actually worried he's going to do something stupid just to do something.

Lebrun already said that Blake talked to GMGM about Gaborik, and the phone call didn't last long.

No one is touching Brown and Gaborik. They're regressing but healthy players on multi-year high AAV deals.

Unless one of them gets a major injury, we're stuck with them.

Maybe Gaborik won't be able to handle a rash once his dollars get smaller.

Gaborik and healthy in the same sentence.

Fans always want the GM to "do something," but usually the best course of action is to do nothing (relatively speaking).

We tend to evaluate GM's on what they do, but often what they don't do is more important.

Please Blake,

Don't trade away assets for a rental.
Don't give out long pricey contracts to UFA's.
Don't waste assets trying to get rid of Brown/Gaborik right now.

It's not very entertaining from a fans perspective, but it's the right course to take IMO.

Agree. It's really not fun after missing the playoffs and waiting for Kings action only to have it still be quiet.

I am more worried about him doing something stupid than not doing anything significant at all.

I am not saying there are major moves Blake can make; I understand the market and see whats going on, so I can't blame him. But the problem with doing nothing is that it puts us in no man's land, i.e., this team is maybe good enough to squeeze into the playoffs, but cannot win a round or two based on the current roster.

We either need to make moves to be a deep playoff team again, or blow it up. I think this season will determine which route we take because if we miss the playoffs, trading Doughty is a must. I doubt he will sign here if we are not a contender and also based on his recent comments.

The hope would then be the all the top guys don't play like crap for the most part again, and the young guys take another step up to help supplement the vets. It's that or, oh my god, everything is awful, and nothing good can happen again.

Yep. That was the hope last season too:

Studs have to stud out
No significant injuries to impact guys
Rookies have to contribute in a big way

It will be hard to be optimistic based on running it back again after last season's disaster.

Of course, all of those points above could go the Kings way and they make the playoffs. I know I'm jumping the gun a bit since it is June 21...it just feels a lot like last off-season.

I'm really curious to see what kind of magic Snow pulled to convince McPhee to take Berube

Seems like everybody's expecting the Islanders to ship the 15th overall pick to Vegas. Previous report had Vegas also taking Kulemin (4.2 mil cap hit) off their hands and/or Mikhail Grabovski (5.0).
