Around the League '16-'17 Other Teams' Free Agent Frenzy

Oiler fan seems salty. If I'm a player, I try to max out what I can get. Don't think the NHLPA would like if those two guys took sweatheart deals.

Stars look good on paper but they'll still end up ******** the bed.

Radulov-Seguin-Benn should be fun to watch in any case.

Habs signed Glass Hemsky for one year @ $1 million.

Grigorenko is rumoured to be heading back to mother Russia.

He was/is such a disappointment. What does it say about a young player that can't even get a contract in colorado at the present?

He speaks as if both players are forced to sign anything....

They are both RFAs, so they have to sign something. The Edmonton poster is right in many respects.

Where are McDavid and Draisaitl going to go if Edmonton only offers 5 years to each player at a reasonable amount?

Some team going to send them an offer sheet? Edmonton, if they like the number, just says thank you very much for handling the negotiation and matches.

No offer sheet? The player sits until they sign a deal with the Oilers.

You don't want to have to play hardball with your star players, but some of these numbers getting tossed around (by their agents I would presume) are ridiculous.

The Oiler fan is correct. These two players are RFAs. Their destinies are completely in the hands of the Oilers.

There will be teams that would offer sheet at whatever McDavid wants. He is worth more than 4 (highly likely) late 1st rounders.

That market will become a pressure cooker quickly if it appears Edmonton is ******* around with either of them.

We were lucky LA is relatively quiet when Drew was holding out.

That Radulov deal is awful. 30 year old with little NHL experience gets a massive deal after a single year return to NA deal. What could go wrong?

Chiarelli's only hope is he can whittle down Draisaitl. McDavid has EDM by the balls. You pay the kid and get it done. It's not only about cap for someone like him, it's about making $$$, filling seats, marketing your team, etc. He will be the best player in the league for next 10 years and is only 20. He's the only player in the league I would say that to and I'd make it clear to everyone else during negotiations.

As for Draisaitl, do everything possible to get him under 10.

If I were Phoenix or Vegas, I would throw 12-13 Million offer sheets, McDavid sells tickets, he is Gretz of this era.

If the kid is with a U.S. team, the marketing would be huge.

McDavid is a talent where he holds the cards

Edmonton matches that without hesitation. He isn't going anywhere. He's a player that will score 1000 points in the next 10 years.

...and then Edmonton just matches.

How many teams can make an offer the Oilers can't match? Pretty much none.

The teams who could do it are budget teams which do not spend to the cap.

Why is it always the team screwing with the player, and never the agent screwing with the team?

Teams can make room for that contract, but of course edmonton will match; in which case, McDavid gets the contract that he wanted all along. On top of that, it will be a 6 year contract, to which case he gets an even better deal 2 years earlier.

Guess you just never hear about it in hockey but you will hear about a guy like Scott Boras really sticking it to MLB teams he is negotiating with in behalf of his clients.

I'd say it's probably more often than not the agent screwing with the team frankly, but in the NHL, that's never the appearance. Maybe I should have said 'the appearance that they may hold out,' shrug.

The is no cap in MLB, instead they have a luxury tax threshold. So when Boras gets more for his clients, he screws the team.

When an NHL agent gets more for his client, he screws the player's teammates and the fans of the team. The team can only spend to the cap, so other players will receive less money. More money for the superstar means a less talented team for the fans.

As a fan, and I know I have a different perspective than most, I see it as the agent screwing the organization more often than not.

Glad we agree.

And when lockouts happen, owners start crying about losing money, yet they're the ones cutting the paychecks.

After so many lockouts, I have no sympathy towards the owners. They made their bed. I used to think the players were being greedy, but the foolishness displayed during this free agent frenzy has made me think otherwise.

Why is a player or his agent under any obligation to take discounts? I don't understand that sentiment at all. This is a job. You maximize your earnings.

I don't blame any player for trying to make the most money possible. It's the GM's job to agree to terms or move on.
