Around the League '16-'17 Other Teams' Free Agent Frenzy

Quick is roughly getting paid half of that.......and has produced better results for his organization when it has mattered most (in regards to the 2012 run).

Relatively the same argument around here the last few seasons.

Aside from the fact that this core won twice.

I think LA has underachieved the last three years. They are still a corsi monster for whatever that is worth.

The Sharks biggest accomplishment is still beating the Kings. (Couture's full pager)

They are as close to the cup as the 93 Kings team was after losing the cup.

LA may never win a cup again but they are not as bad as 99% of non-fans make them out to be.

Oilers and Ducks should lock up the top two spots.
CGY, SJ, and LA, should fight it out for 3rd.
Ari, Van, and Vegas will probably be the last group.

IF LA plays to its potential, they should compete for a playoff spot.
Gonna be tough tho.

I wonder if the players would accept something like non-guaranteed contracts (after 5 seasons) in exchange for no salary cap? It's a big trade off for both sides. Contracts that are 4 seasons or less would be excluded and guaranteed, and contracts up to five years are guaranteed money, but after five years, a team can opt to bow out of a contract.

But with no cap (or a luxury tax over a certain threshold), player salaries could sky rocket and reach MLB/NBA/NFL levels of deals. McDavid could be a $20M+ player.

I doubt we'd see the NHL go there since their revenues pail in comparison to other sports, but something to consider since we are inevitably headed towards another lockout.

While I like your out of the box thinking, the owners will never relinquish the salary cap. They fought for years and through two lockouts to get a cap with a 50/50 split.

There will likely be another lockout. Once again the owners will have almost all of the leverage. I expect the max length of contracts to drop to no more than 6 years, or some type of non-guaranteed contracts.

The owners aren't going to allow big money to be paid to players over 8 years if they aren't earning it.

I don't understand the excitement fans have regarding big contracts. What exactly has McDavid done to be worth $20M a season?

That Price contract is HORRENDOUS!! You simply cannot give that contract to a goalie in a salary cap league like this is. For the seasons between 18-19 and 21-22, Montreal will be paying Price (31-34 years old), Alzner (30-33 years old), and Weber (33-36 years old) a combined 23 million against the cap

well the good thing is

Price = 10.5 AAV
Quick and Gabby = 10.675 AAV

See, things are not that bad, If Quick performs like Price, Gabby just has to perform like a $175,000 a year player or the same way he did last year

Bergevin is such a ****ing awful GM. How does this guy still have a job, especially in a market like Montreal? I just don't get it. Can someone enlighten me? For years I've complained about this guy, he's terrible. Look at the moves he's made.

Carey Price had the Habs in the perfect position. He had all the leverage and had them by the balls. Montreal is barely a playoff team with the best goalie in the league, what happens if he leaves?

That Alzner deal is another disaster. I feel bad for whichever GM takes over because they're going to inherit a complete mess.

Still no 1C, offense is still awful, defense is forgettable. Basically all they have is Price and Weber, a few good pieces, and nothing else. They're gonna bend over for Radulov if he stays in the NHL.

If it was a one year deal 6.25m would be reasonable, but three years? Pretty risky.

That's truly ****ing gross.

Well, toronto was the only team that offered the 3rd year and good on Marleau for taking on the security for (pretty much) his last years.

Did Thornton officially sign that one year deal today? I know Bob McKenzie mentioned on Twitter last night that he was not officially signed.

Yet somehow people were critical of Blake's signings on day one, ha!

Some teams are going to be looking at dumping some contracts in the near future.
