I read that too. But he talked to Tallon and they didn't come to an agreement, he had to know it was possible.

Sharks and Cats come up winners. Sharks clearing CAP space and unloading a bad contract , scooping up picks. Hoffman needs to drop his excess baggage or leave it in Canada, you add him (unless he gets traded again) to Barkov, BJugstad, Huberdeau, Trocheck, Dadanov...pretty nice top 6.
Agreed, Florida did alright here. They have some talented young forwards.

Panarin potentially on the move....

There is word today that Artemi Panarin has told CLB that he is not ready to consider an extension “at this time.” (UFA July 2019.) As a result, the Blue Jackets are testing the market for him.

The assets wasted on Tatar would have been better spent trying to gun for a player like Panarin. I feel like he'd be a great fit with Vegas especially if they lose one of or both David Perron and James Neal.

If they do move Panarin you can bet they get a significantly better return than what they gave to Chicago for him just a year ago.

Sometimes trading a guy at his peak value isn't a bad thing, especially if he isn't going to re-sign. Columbus isn't going to contend for a cup this season anyways.

Agreed, if Panarin isn't going to sign now is the time to move him for Columbus. That's a team which showed promise, but doesn't look like it will get over the hump. Still some very good young talent there in Jones, Werenski, and Dubois. They can get some nice pieces for Panarin to build around those three guys.

At the time of the Tatar trade, was anyone saying wait for the Panarin rumors to start in June? If that's the bar, then no GM should ever move anyone, because someone better might be available later.

Vegas has plenty of dry powder to add two impact players this off season. Let's see if McPhee can get it done. Easier said, than done.

Plenty thought they overpaid for a player who appeared to be redundant in their lineup and is getting paid a decent amount of money. Tatar wound up being a healthy scratch for Vegas during the post season. I'm not sure if sending a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft selection on someone to sit is smart investment, but maybe that's just me.

Toffoli + for Panarin. Sign Tavares. Trade Muzzin or Martinez. Go big one year then trade whom you need to next offseason. Moves should be significant enough to show Doughty to sign long term.

I just don’t see JT leaving NY. I’m sure he has a good idea of what the Islanders are offering salary wise and he has chatted with Lou regarding how he envisions constructing the club this offseason.

Nothing wrong with JT getting to July 1 to see what’s out there and compare offers but I can’t see him anywhere else.

I am interested to see what the Isles do at the draft. I’m thinking they acquire their goalie and maybe make another deal to help with their defense core. They probably also hire Trotz and make that official prior to July 1.

They completely wasted the picks on Tatar, but it wasn't because Panarin might not want to sign in Columbus. McPhee did the Forsberg deal, so maybe he got Tatar to be a healthy scratch come playoff time, but that probably turned out to be the case more than the actual plan.

In all likelihood, Panarin isn't going anywhere yet. Yes, Columbus has no chance at the Cup, but they also can't keep recycling their team. They've gotten a taste of competitiveness, and they can't go backwards. They're not getting a signed Panarin level player for an unsigned Panarin, unless they luck out the same way they themselves did by only giving up Saad for Panarin. You can make a guess that this guy is unsigned so he might be available, but if you're at the top of the league, you work with what you have in the now. Vegas was going for it, and Tatar helped them more today than the idea of Panarin next year without Perron and/or Neal.

CAP Update

Still some deliberating but sounds like 2018-19 #NHL salary cap has been narrowed down to between $79-80 million. Initial projection is that player escrow withholding starts under 10% for first time since 2011-12.

Players could vote for same growth inflator (1.35%) used last summer. At $79 million, it is the largest single-season cap jump since 2013-14.

With the Sens fire sale on, Pageau should draw interest from a number of clubs.

It's not just Boston though, anyone who doesn't have scoring depth wants to create three dangerous scoring lines. Good spot to be in if your Ottawa, there will be a nice market for a player like this.

He played 1 SCF game and won't get his name on the cup, aside from that, terrible trade even if its just for picks. That is a deal an over confident GM does who thinks all his moves are golden.

It's akin to acquiring Martin Erat at a high cost. Don't get me wrong, Tatar has some talent that can help a team that is desperate for offense, but he didn't strike me as a guy who would cost three decent draft picks. Down the road, I'm not sure if this trade will be looked at fondly when the deal is reviewed.

The times I saw him, he looked really lost on the ice ,not sure where to go .

SJ needed to move cap in order to gun for Tavares after that disastrous Kane deal. I wouldn't be surprised if they probably buy out Martin too.

SJ basically needs to sign Hertl, Tierney, Thornton, and Tavares with probably around 16 mil in space, PLUS leave room for extension for Pavelski and Couture next year (1 to 2 mil increase each, they aren't getting paid the same as Kane). In my mind, they can't sign both Thornton and Tavares unless Jumbo takes the sweetheart deal. The big question is will he? I'd say the odds are likely.

edit: not too mention next year they have a ton of RFAs they need to sign as well.

Pavelski and Couture are going to be looking for big paydays. If Kane got 7 as a problem player, what do think those two will be asking? Start at 8 and go up.My guess in the mid 9's.
Hertl won't be cheap either. All of a sudden , the cap space isn't as much as it was.
