that's good except for my fantasy team

ditto, this might actually kill my championship hopes as I had both Rakell and Andersen.

and in real life, not sure a lot of folks (not necessarily here, but in general) are aware of how pivotal Rakell has been this season for ANA either, could be a big blow if he's out a long time.

Hey guys... Ottawa fans reminded us that Karlsson was strong defensively last game. Our previous criticisms are now invalid and he's more deserving of the Norris than ever before.

Doughty will likely come up short to his career best points total, but he's having a similar season with better defensive numbers and he was only runner up to an amazing Duncan Keith season that year iirc.

He will most certainly come up short from his best totals. He'd have to have 2 point games from here on out to tie it.
But he will hit the 50 point mark, which is important, and be top 10 in scoring. Neither of which he was last year.
Add in the fact that the Kings are back in the playoffs he should actually do better in voting than last year. He didn't win last year because he was completely left off so many ballots. And my guess is that is because the team didn't make the playoffs.

Yup. He's having a better season than the one in which he won first place votes. He should be on more ballots this time with the Kings locking down a playoff position. I don't think Karlsson is gonna suffer as much of a drop off with his team missing as Doughty did but it might be enough.

Karlsson doesn't even need to suffer a drop off. If the idiots that left Doughty off the ballot get their collective heads out of their ***** he'll win. Karlsson was on 20 more ballots than Doughty and yet won by only 75 points.
I just don't understand how 31 voters can leave Doughty off the ballot totally and 11 left Karlsson off.

I remember a 'writer' put down Kronwall as #1, and that was it.

Is there anyway the NHL can revoke some of these writers from sending in ballots?

Amen.

Some of the pettiness and petulance you see from writers in all markets shows up there and that's exhibit one. It doesn't necessarily matter who literally has the best case, it's a popularity and face-stats contest as a whole.

Posted this in 'that thread,' thought you guys may like. I know they won't, so just to appreciate the DEFENSIVE season Doughty is having on top of his monster all-around play, he's at least top-3 defensive-only d-man too, only guys with a case otherwise are Stralman (playing with hedman, focusing on d-only) and mayyyybe Adam Larsson Edit: maybe Vlasic, and the Ducks' second pairing too, but basically ALL of those guys are getting 5 or more less minutes than Drew and doing it with far superior partners/support in some way.

I'll pick Stralman, since imo he's the best strictly defensive guy on there. Feel free to disagree. He's also in a good playoff situation, etc. Their teams are also really close in GA and other such numbers.

Stralman's base numbers are fantastic--1.30 GA/60, 61.5% GF%, -0.90 GA/60 Rel team, 8.4 GF% rel team. CF% 54.9%, 47.4 CA/60, -5.66 CA/60 rel team, 3.0 CF% rel team.

In comparison,

Doughty, 1.47 GA/60, 59.4 GF%, -0.65 GA/60 Rel team, GF% rel team 8.8%. CF% 58.9, 43.8 CA/60, -8.94 CA/60 rel team, 4.9% CF% rel team. So it's pretty close all around there.

However, you'll also have to consider their partners. I think it was fair to pick Stralman from the standpoint of elite defensive defenseman and guy that can move the puck as well, he's a monster and should be considered in Vlasic territory, but let's also consider that he plays with Hedman. Without Hedman, stralman's GA/60 goes up to 1.41 (still great), but he has a 1.25 GF/60, which would literally be 127th out of 127 d-men who have played 50 or more games--I know we're speaking defensively only, but that's a guy who can focus on defense because he's playing with the perfect partner; now that's obviously not a bad thing because it makes an epic pairing, but that's a very different situation, too. Without Hedman, Stralman's GF% is 47.1%, his CF% drops by 5%, and his CA/60 goes up by 5. There is a significant case to be made that a lot of Stralman's play is made possible by Hedman. Doughty has no such support in his partners (except in the very limited time he spends with Muzzin) and his numbers stay mega-high no matter who he is paired with. Take Rob Scuderi away from Doughty and he's a 45.2% CF% player while Doughty is a 66; Scuds CA/60 balloons to 59, Doughtys goes to 36. McNabb without Doughty is a 50% CF%, Doughty 56; McNabbs CA/60 also balloons to 59, Doughty to 47; even the HF Darling Jake Muzzin (when it's convenient to bash Doughty, anyway) is a 56 CF without Doughty. It's safe to say who is the play driver and defensive force (keeping in mind that those corsi numbers are magnified by Doughty's amazing Corsi AGAINST numbers as he's being asked to play the role of elite defensive-first d-man in all situations except the PP where he's unleashed).

TOI is another matter. Stralman plays 17:04 ES min a game, good for 107th amongst Dmen. Doughty is 3rd with 21:57. Doughty also plays nearly an additional minute shorthanded compared to Stralman, and almost 6 more total minutes per game, with much lesser partners.

Now, despite all that, maybe you're right; maybe it iS impossible to state with certainty that Doughty is having the clear-cut best defensive d-man season. But he's AT LEAST top 10; are you willing to say Karlsson is top-10 defensively? I think Doughty's top-10 offense. top-10 defense, all-around minutes and defensive play carrying for a top cup contender and a top-3 defensive team in the league as evidenced by his insane goal differential in all situations overrides EK's season.

Edit: also I couldn't pull up war-on-ice for some reason for the last hour so I couldn't find HDSC etc., but as far as individual defensive play, you've no doubt seen DD breaking up odd-man breaks all year, those are often caused by Brayden McNabb pretending he's Paul Coffey, missing a hit, or just flat-out falling down, so if you're looking for video evidence, you won't have to look far.

Not bad for a guy who is more 'eye test' than stats.

He's amazing (and I'm not yet convinced he's not part Bionic as well)

Mexico speaks to NHL about hosting 2 NHL preseason games

http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/41149/nhl-preseason-games-in-mexico-city

Joaquin de la Garma, the president of Mexico Ice Hockey Federation,

That's a group of words I've never thought of...

Kadri and diving - NHL hits him for 3rd time this season to the tune of $5000 in fines. First time was just a warning, I guess he was just getting warmed up at that point.

On Friday the NHL said Kadri had been fined for diving/embellishment for the second time this season. This triggered a $3,000 fine, which means his next infraction, Kadri will be fined $4,000 and coach Mike Babcock will receive a $2,000 fine.

Well beyond embarrassing , 3 times in one year for diving...
