5-0 Hawks. Rask pulled. Bruins are getting absolutely stomped

Kane hat trick, 6-0 Hawks. The Bruins are a dumpster fire.

Varsity vs JV

Just got back. That's a smackdown. Not what I wanted to hear. One, cause you know how I feel about the Hawks and two because the Bruins (and the Buffalo Sabres) are the Eastern teams I have a fondness for. Kane getting a hat trick is just the cherry on top.

Speaking of the Sabres, last year Tim Murray personally drove the tank. They got Eichel and there's an excitement about the team and the direction they're headed. The Oilers got McDavid and Coach Todd McClellan looked like he had the migraine from hell after lambasting his team's effort in their 5-0 loss to the Flames last night.

I've been following the Norris debate with great interest and it looks like it's been taken over by a few really uninformed Karlsson fans. For the most part you King fans have been doing a good job of presenting Doughty's case for the Norris.

I have been following both players this year. Doughty is having an amazing year this year which most of you already know. Karlsson's year hasn't been nearly as good as the Ottawa fans would have you believe. His assists actually flatter his offensive performance and he has been as terrible as the advanced stats say he is in the defensive zone.

Karlsson has made a lot of bad turnovers that have led to quality scoring chances against. Some of which have led to goals while others Anderson has bailed him out. Ottawa also isn't nearly as bad as Karlsson fans make them out to be. They have played a lot of the best teams this year really tough. Karlsson is a great player, certainly better than Burns but it would be wrong for him to win the Norris this year in my opinion.

Doughty on the other hand has been amazing this year, his plus/minus speaks volumes. Don't let people scare you off that stat, most people don't know how to use plus/minus in it's right context. It's wonderful simple stat that usually paints an accurate picture if you use it in the right way.

I think Doughty might be the most important 5 vs 5 player currently in the NHL. People talk about his lack of offensive on 5 vs 5 that's because they don't understand Doughty's role on the Kings. The second Carter goal vs Calgary speaks to one of the reasons why he doesn't have more points but it also speaks to how valuable Doughty is to the Kings winning.

More reasons for lack of points on 5 vs 5 is the Kings low shooting % in most games. His job most of the time is to start the offensive from the D-zone, and then on top of that he usually plays the safety valve. The last time he was able to play a more offensive game was in 2012, since then he has had to be the more conservative player on his paring. There is a reason so many coaches are talking about Doughty being the best D-man and one of the best players in the game, and isn't because of his ability on the power play.

There is also something that Doughty does that is better than any other D-man in the game, but there is really no stat for it. This ability that Doughty has gives the Kings such a huge advantage over other teams. The first time I became aware of it was during the 2012 playoffs, and it was because of something Ken Hitchcock said. Since then others have referred to it as well. Did you notice what Bruce Boudreau said about Doughty after their playoff series in 2014? He said something along the lines that Doughty was the reason the Kings won the series. Now look at Doughty's stats for that series, do they match with what Boudreau said? I will let you guys analyze Doughty's game for yourselves to see if you can fiqure out what I am referring to. Here's a hint though, Taylor Hall recently made some comments that slightly refer to what I am talking about.

I'm staying out of the Norris thread for the rest of the year. It's gone full troll.

Honestly this is what happens when people stop looking at the game objectively and get blinded by sheer fanatic fanboyism. But I mean I understand it's all Sens fans have to look forward to since they're not going to win a cup anytime soon and they have literally 0 other exciting players/prospects.

I hope you like your Flyer hockey.Next week, it's all Flyers all the time.
[ok, maybe a little photoshop help.]

It's points damn it! Points, Points, Points, Points, Points, ! Why won't anyone listen to me? /fanboy rant

I'm fully expecting the Wild to take out the Stars in 5 or 6. No idea how they got 105 points on the year.

I want to see the Stars make the 2nd round just to be crushed like the Flames last year. It's so much better to get the hopes up a little bit before bringing them back to reality.

Guess there's a team I hate more then the Hawks right now... Yup the refs... Seriously 10 mins worth of high stick penalties completely missed. Those guys should be fined for incompetence. At least 1 games pay for not doing their job.

Kings no longer control their own destiny for the division. Crushing loss last night.

Edit: Nevermind. Thought Ducks had 5 games left.

Lots of stuff...

Thanks for the kind words about Doughty - I think most of us just poke our heads in that thread now and again to keep Doughty's name from being dragged through the mud, but some of our more dedicated posters have waged a full campaign.

The thing I hear people praising Doughty for is basically controlling the game at key moments - he knows when to press and doesn't make ill-timed pinches. Don't know if that's what you're alluding to, but he shines on the big stage under pressure when other players understandably wilt a bit.
