Around the League 15-16 Part 3

No one wanted to see Martinez, Muzzin or Voynov moved because of on-ice performance, just like no one in Chicago wanted to see Saad or Sharp moved because of on-ice performance.

But there is a salary cap and moves have to be made to keep teams under that cap. That is why people were discussing possibly moving Martinez, not because he is a bad player.

I wanted A-Mart gone at 4 million with the performance he had last season. Also A-Mart would have held some value in a trade. As opposed to say (Greene) for example.

The numbers don't lie, when A-Mart was put into second pairing minutes and match-ups he struggled nightly with Greene, both of those guys had to play out of their realm last season.

That is why, halfway through the season Muzzin was paired with Greene. Greene's Possession rating went from around 47% to 56%, and his GA per 60, dropped a full Goal (Paired with Muzzin).

A-Mart struggled last year, as did Greene. Based on that evaluation(also the cap situation, at that time) I wanted A-Mart traded, he wasn't worth his salary. Just like Brown is not worth his right now.

This season is different, the Voynov/Richards situations are solved, and A-Mart is earning his paycheck.

Good all around.

Also shows you just how much a beast Muzzin is, BEASTLY. I think Jake Muzzin is this current development staff's, greatest achievement.

Pens saw that hit and did nothing, literally stood there. Nobody came to his defense...there's just something disjointed about that team.
Last week Malkin made that comment about the team

Maata is one of the few positives things that has happened to that team and they just let that happen and skate away?
No leadership...something that has plagued them for years.

I thought Crosby was suppose to be some great leader ? Overrated, in that department if you ask me.

Just another note with A-Mart discussion.

Had the Richards/Slava situations played out different, and the Kings had been held to more Cap space retention. A-Mart would have been a prime candidate to be moved.

I truly believe that.

Also I want Dustin Brown to retire a King, but I am not wrong in saying his contract is godawful. Rooting real hard for Brown to turn his career around production wise.

Obviously, that is what I was trying to say.

There was simply no way the Kings could afford to pay $20m to their top 4 defenseman, so if the Kings wanted to re-sign Kopitar one of Martinez, Muzzin or Voynov was going to have to be moved.

Frankly Lombardi dodged two huge bullets with Richards/Smyth contracts.

Now though Lombardi has to deal with Brown's. Also I am just not looking forward to seeing what ridiculous number Kopitar gets.

Maybe I'll be surprised, and it will be reasonable (doubt it). Eight years at anything over 9.5 million seems bad for a 60-65 point Center.

Kopitar might not even make 60 points this season, if he keeps going this way.

Glad to see the Martinez trade fantasy posters have returned from hibernation.

What did Martinez do to you guys anyway? Run over your puppy?

I swear we will be hearing Martinez trade talk here as long (maybe longer) than Richards' threads popping up of their own volition.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
I totally agree. I never understood it and never will. "The 18 months ago the situation was different" argument might be true but you could make a case for Voynov, Greene and even Muzzin too. I rather got rid of Voynov or Greene back then, so no I dont understand it.

With Martinez we know what we have and that remains to be seen with any other (see Sekera). Lets face it, how often do we talk about Martinez, positive or negative ? Rarely. He's as solid as it can be.

His cap aint bad at all, yet people want to bring over Hamonic with about the same cap + extra piece together with Martinez.

Mind boggling.

15-25-40 would be acceptable production at this point, and that's still far below what his cap hit dictates.

Was Jim Hughson doing a national broadcast of tonights Jets-Canucks game?

That was just awful broadcasting, he literally spent the last 3 minutes of the game talking about how the Canucks had bad luck, played well, deserved better blah blah blah.

I find him so friggi nmonotone it's hard to stay awake. Also just like most broadcasters are leafs homers on saturday night, Jim is the biggest Canucks Homer

Hi there.... I did not go anywhere.
have always said that I like Martinez but bottom line is his contract is likely movable. It is not bad enough that another team says no, but is not good enough to add value to him. So if he needs to be moved with another piece for an upgrade I am all for it.
That is all. I just think he is our most tradeable piece and has not made himself indispensable. He has been very good, but I think can be replaced for less.

I remember a lot of people said Martinez would never be more than a bottom pairing defenseman but he's proved them wrong this season.

Absolutely. Hamonic plays #1 minutes on a good defenses in Brooklyn, he is right handed so would help balance our pairs, he is more of a stay at home guy so would allow his partner to pressure more offensively.
Martinez + for sure... All this is moot though as I doubt Hamonic waives for LA

To improve the team, there is going to have to be some salary moved out. No one wants Brown, Gaborik or Greene. So that leaves second tier guys like Muffin, Martinez, King, Clifford to be moved out because A-they have value and B-moving their salary out helps. We like Martinez, but he's by far the easiest salary to trade.

To improve the team, you need to trade for a player who is better than the one being traded.

Who is giving up a true Top-4 defenseman that makes $4 million that is better than Amart?

I can't think of any teams or individual players that meet that criteria.

exactly. Trading King or Clifford does not create all that much cap space. and Muzzin>A-Mart.

Hamonic would be a great fit here, but we are not Western Canada. Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Vancouver would be my guess if it is truly family related. He would fill a massive need in Edmonton and they have the pieces, seems like a great match.

Martinez has been solid and is earning his contract. We have proven we can play well without two expensive contracts in Greene and King, who both would also fill oilers needs when looking at there roster.

It would be nice to use Greene and King in a package for a 3C. Let our defence develop and address the need for D at the deadline if need be. I am liking the early stages of Forbert and think McNabb will continue to grow.

Love Brown but any possible scenario where we can ditch his contract without eating salary or sending a high pick with him we should do.

I am in complete agreement. Doughty is more talented than Muzzin, but Muzzin drives possession time like no other Kings defenseman. Muzzin makes every partner he plays with better, which should be the deciding factor in handing out big contracts.

he said his preference is western canada but is negotiable to other options closer to home (which we are not), so maybe a team like the wild or even Colorado comes into the scope.
It's a pipe dream that he would come here, but that's the point of HF board trade proposals right? to dream

Yes and do you visit the Islanders board frequently ? Inform how quite a few of them think about Hamonic, way before he even requested a trade.

Some here are blinded by right handed defensemen and ''the balance''.

I am "blinded" by the fact he is the type of defenseman we are missing, and that I think he is better than Martinez and will continue to develop.

Are you saying he is worth less than Martinez?

This is not a thing of 1+1=2.

Not so long ago, I thought Sekera was also miles better than Martinez. Now I think the difference isnt so big.

in a non cap world I agree it would not make sense to add too much to Martinez, but in a cap world if we can add a player with cap that adds value to the Islanders it could be a win win.
Again I do no think we have a shot at all at getting him anyway.

Martinez won't be going anywhere. The Kings already painfully slow on D cannot afford to lose his speed. End of discussion.

Had no idea Lucic's father committed suicide in the Summer, completely ****ed. He's been playing well despite that bombshell.

RIP.

to say he had a roller coaster of an offseason is an understatement. traded, had a baby, dad's suicide....have to feel for the guy

He legitimately seems like a great dude and a solid teammate, such a **** thing to happen to someone like that.
