Makes me wonder who the Kings would lose in an expansion draft..

Well assuming the 9-5-1 format stays in place, they could protect:

Kopitar (assuming he re-signs)
Toffoli
Carter
Pearson
Shore
Clifford
Andreoff (maybe)

Really have no idea who else, Lucic possibly gone this summer, same for Lewis, King next summer. Don't think they would protect Brown or Gaborik, and use as an opportunity to dump the contract, as unlikely as it may be. If guys like Mersch or Kempe have prominent roles by next season, they would need to be protected.

Dewey
Muzzin
Martinez
McNabb
Forbort (I assume he will have logged enough games by the end of next season where he will need to be)

Quick

The part that scares me is it sounds like they aren't going to give near the protection they have in the past.

Good thing it sounds like their may only be one team in the summer of 2017, may only be one player per team.

Probably someone like Forbort.

As far as Brown goes, who knows, they still have to reach the floor and it's not like FA's are going to go crazy to sign with expansion teams so they are going to have to sign some not so great players to big contracts to get to that floor, could do a lot worse than a guy who captained multiple cup championship teams, great in the community and great family guy.

Stamkos disappoints the **** out of me. He's fallen off so much and was garbage in the playoffs last year.

I thought he was good in the playoffs, doing everything that was asked of him, given his coach did not utilize him right. He's a natural center who was asked to play wing during the playoff run. He's averaged 45 goals a year, and almost a point per game over his career, which any team would take.
His problem is Cooper and it's been evident for some time. There's bad blood there and he'll be better off up north playing for Babcock.
He's a very skilled skater and pure goal scorer and only 25, he's got a very bright NHL career in front of him.
I'd love to have him on the Flyers...

It won't. Thats' been the subject of several articles and panel discussions. If the NHL does expand , the NHL wants that team to be competitive and the expansion draft will be shaded that way. Teams will have much harder decisions to make.
And one of the Sportsnet guys mentioned that only 28 teams will be exposed, he said the Devils and Yotes are exemt due to change of ownership in the two year period (and the CBA).
They did say that prior formats wouldn't be viable , esp due to the CAP.

At this point it sounds like expansion is barely 50/50. And going down in chances. But we'll see. The league has been very tight on what and how they say things. But having Vegas do everything they have done and not go there will not be good for a non traditional market. And I don't want to think how those north will act about it.

Agreed. I would estimate a 5-3-1 protection or a certain % of the cap of the team. 60%?

BoB McKenzie wrote a piece about the sinking Penguins and changes in the air, as in major trade, fire GM , coach ...

http://www.tsn.ca/change-is-in-the-air-in-pittsburgh-1.406642

The problem isn't the coach. I'm not a Rutherford fan and he's not done a stellar job there as a GM (Not sure why they hired him) I can see that one.
But the major problem with that team was , is and remains the locker room. They have no leadership, which is exhibited every playoffs. They don't play as a team, play for the guy on the bench next to you, there is a lack of cohesiveness that most really good teams show when they play. That comment Malkin made a few weeks ago about the players being mad at each other was on the mark.
Crosby has never shown the kind of leaderhip, esp in the playoffs that is required to win. And I've always thought he was the problem, that is why that room has a fracture in it.

Well, a lot of people think that the best player is automatically the best leader. Doesn't Edmonton already have McDavid's C all ready for next year's jersey?

What a horrible shift by Hamhuis... First he turns the puck over and then couple of seconds later gets a one-timer to the face. Shot was way off net, too. Hopefully he's OK.

Vancouver leapfrogs the Sharks to take a stranglehold on 2nd. The Sharks are a point behind, with two games in hand and own the tiebreaker. The question the nation is asking is can the Sharks get one point in their next two games to match the powerhouse Canucks?

Who am I kidding. This division is ****ing boring. It's less about who's better, and more about who sucks less.

6 teams separated by 6 points. Ignore Calgary, and 5 teams separated by 4 points.

Just the kind of parity the NHL wants. Anyone can get hot for a game or two and be in a playoff spot. After all, the Kings proved in 2012 that you can win from any seeding.

The Pacific Division is really bad. I wonder what the division's record is against teams outside the division if you take the Kings out of the equation.

I haven't looked at the standings in a while. 7 point lead with games in hand on everyone except last place Calgary. Nice.

Considering how this season started, its amazing. Around October 14, half this place was ready to start talking about how we get ourselves into the Matthews lottery.
