It is a farce, the Stamkos, Marchessault, and Saros contracts already proved that. It was simply a line he used to take a poke at Duchene, a guy he didn't like.
There is a sick irony to that.

I believe Duchene and his family really like the area and still live in/near Nashville. So they were planning to "retire" here, put down roots, and be ambassadors to and a part of the community as a whole. That's why what Trotz did was so gut wrenching to his entire family.

But the irony is Duchene, with whatever gifts and defects you want to list, is still a player that wants to come to the rink, works hard, and wants to win. He chose Dallas since it was close to the place he wanted as his forever home.

The more you look at it, it's hard not to see it as a petty, wee dick move.

Oh no doubt and since Trotz had never coached him it looks even more petty. It would be different if there was history there, like him and Radulov, but there is nothing.

I've also heard the ROR excuse, but frankly if that was the case that just makes me think less of ROR than anything else.

My guess is since Duchene was filmed during the taxi incident of bad mouthing the coach trotz wouldn't take kindly to his kind here. Trotz is a coach roleplaying a general manager.

It's obviously possible that there's a negative vibe/personality trait thing that Duchene gives off that maybe Trotz didn't feel he wanted in the locker room, but it truly was hard to hear Duchene's telling of events on how things unfolded. There's probably never been a free agent as high profile as him that truly wanted to come to Nashville to be in Nashville. It's a total bummer and should be absolutely be a question mark on GMBT's judgement

Two sides to be very story but the way Duch said it makes you wonder. If you have a guy that wants to stay here and make a difference.... Makes a guy think.
Well, you get a call one day. A friendly check-in. "How's it going? You ready?" "Hell, yes. Let's go," sort of thing. The next day you find out you've been bought out.

I think Trotz just wanted a piece of that contract back to go shopping for his cereal winners. If Duchene was a locker room cancer, it didn't show. I mean, he wasn't clearly coasting and getting healthy scratched like Turris was.

Some rumours on ROR:

This is absolutely ridiculous. If you want to treat a guy like he has an NMC then give him an NMC and get a frigging cap hit discount. Otherwise the lack of protection is in itself telling the player he can be moved at any time.

Maybe more frustrating, is that this whole idea that these guys provide valuable leadership is getting us jack in terms of on ice results. If we actually let young guys play and be "mentored" there might be an argument, but otherwise this is stupid. If Trotz isn't learning from this season that the team needs talent and not more old high intangible guys, it's hopeless. ROR hasn't even been that good this year.

I'm sure O'Reilly will get that NMC on his upcoming extension. I wonder what that deal will look like? If Stamkos is worth 4x$8M... :dunno:

One of Trotz's glaring problems is rushing to make moves that he doesn't have to. He had nine months until a TDL, almost 12 full months until Saros's contract expired ... but extended him at first opportunity. There was no need for Wedge with Askarov in the pipeline .... but he rushed again and pushed Askarov out. He inexplicably extended Fabbro last March when he was a routine scratch ... just to see him scratched this season .... then waived. From the outside there is no indication that he's letting things play out according to a plan. Knee jerk after knee jerk isn't a way to manage a roster.

Going back to the previous 9 NHL drafts, we had exactly 3 guys in last night's lineup from those drafts that we picked and developed. L'Heureux, Svechkov, and Stastney. If you go back 10 NHL drafts, you can add Novak to make it 4 guys.
Yikes. I knew it was bad but I didn't realize it was that bad.

By contrast, the Jackets' lineup the other night had 11 such guys. Plus two more if you count folks signed as undrafted free agents...

Add: we have 0 NHL games played for any draft pick in the last 3 years. (Which is a good indication of just how unlikely it is to do a "quick tank" and unsink the ship in 3 years.)

The 2022 class looks like a complete washout, except possibly Kemell, who is the only one under contract. But Kemell looks like his stock has dropped like a rock in the AHL.

2023, we have Molendyk, Lind, and Roest signed and finishing out in the CHL. So they'll be the doughy kids stuck in the AHL oven for a while to overcook. Molendyk might not need to cook all the long, but we have a glut of LHD.

2024 will be a few more years of development.

We have a couple interesting prospects from 2020 onward.

2020 -
Askarov is making a nice NHL impact but not for us
Evangelista is struggling some under Bruno
Weisblatt may end up as a 4th line energy guy if we stop hiring tweeners

2021 -
Svechkov looks like a good player
L'Heureux is a middle of the lineup agitator
Ufko still needs some work but may end up middle pairing puck mover. Id say he is more probable to be a top notch AHL player though.

2022 -
Kemell is still doing good at the AHL level.
O'Hara will be interesting to follow if he can keep up the pace after leaving NCAA
Schaefer had a big step forward this season. Him and Ozzy could make up 2/3 of a strong 4th line.

2023 - lots of potential here
Wood - people are down on him but he is still having a good season.
Molendyk - lots of potential
Nilsson - great rookie season in the SHL and a good showing at WJC
Lind
Willis - having a good year in the OHL
Roest - think he has been injured this season?
Fink - near the top of NCAA scoring
Edstrom - decent year in SHL and good showing at WJC
Gibson - looking solid

I think 23 might be a solid draft year for us. Lots of potential even if a couple dont pan out.

On Kemell, the vibe going into the offseason was hovering around he deserved to get a shot in the NHL. I think there were even quite a few posts that had him penciled in on the opening day roster.

When I say his stock has dropped, I mean he has been passed by L'Heureux, Svechkov, Wiesblatt, Hinostroza, and Bellows in terms of being called up. It's not a judgment of what he'd done or is doing. In fact, I think it is much better that he stays in Milwaukee and gets a chance to play, rather gets our 1st round pick treatment here (play 1 period, get your shifts reduced, go to the pressbox, trade for a talking parrot).

Kemell is younger and drafted after L'Heureux and Svechkov. If they werent on the callup order infront of him, it would say more about them then him.

Theyre going to let him sit in the AHL until they have to move him up. Theyre going to let him overcook or trade him for scraps at some point. He is a top 6 or bust type of prospect and we crammed the top 6 with old dudes with the coach showing very little willingness to put any youth there for an extended period of time. I think many of us were expecting/wanting youth mixed in with the high end vets... instead we have mainly had 2 old dudes lines, the 3rd line from last year that barely gets ice time, and a grinder package

Yep.

This is the wrong discussion forum for "grinder package". Please see your way out. 😝

I think the peak vibe for Kemell was when he showed up for that cameo at the end of his season in Finland two years ago. His immediate success and great playoff run really had our hopes up.

But I don't think anybody was pencilling him in after last season? He was "just ok" last season. Which wouldn't be worrisome in and of itself, since he was still just 19-20. Even now in his 20-21y.o. season you wouldn't normally be "worried", except... there doesn't seem to be a progression from the previous season? You want to see those numbers ticking up each year in the same league, ideally, even when he's still overall young and has plenty of time left. Even low-key "worry" like that does tend to result in "stock dropping" tags, though, that's just the way it goes.

I'm not surprised his numbers haven't gone up, the quality of players around him has been progressively going down as well. Even good players in the NHL need someone good to play with, the only ones that don't are generational talents that can pretty much make anyone they play with look decent.

To be fair to Trotz there is probably a calculus between ruthless emotionless business decisions and making an organization feel safe and welcoming so players will be more likely to consider playing for a franchsie.

Looking at recent situations of big name vets with big contracts like Trouba we can see there was a pushback on how he was treated by players.

I think moving ROR could potentially be a great move. He's still a good player and his contract is extremely team friendly. Two more years after this season at 4.5 million. He is the exact type of player contending teams would fight over. I could see a bidding war and overpayment.
