Speculation: Armchair GM Thread

It is a farce, the Stamkos, Marchessault, and Saros contracts already proved that. It was simply a line he used to take a poke at Duchene, a guy he didn't like.
There is a sick irony to that.

I believe Duchene and his family really like the area and still live in/near Nashville. So they were planning to "retire" here, put down roots, and be ambassadors to and a part of the community as a whole. That's why what Trotz did was so gut wrenching to his entire family.

But the irony is Duchene, with whatever gifts and defects you want to list, is still a player that wants to come to the rink, works hard, and wants to win. He chose Dallas since it was close to the place he wanted as his forever home.

The more you look at it, it's hard not to see it as a petty, wee dick move.

Oh no doubt and since Trotz had never coached him it looks even more petty. It would be different if there was history there, like him and Radulov, but there is nothing.

I've also heard the ROR excuse, but frankly if that was the case that just makes me think less of ROR than anything else.

My guess is since Duchene was filmed during the taxi incident of bad mouthing the coach trotz wouldn't take kindly to his kind here. Trotz is a coach roleplaying a general manager.

It's obviously possible that there's a negative vibe/personality trait thing that Duchene gives off that maybe Trotz didn't feel he wanted in the locker room, but it truly was hard to hear Duchene's telling of events on how things unfolded. There's probably never been a free agent as high profile as him that truly wanted to come to Nashville to be in Nashville. It's a total bummer and should be absolutely be a question mark on GMBT's judgement

Two sides to be very story but the way Duch said it makes you wonder. If you have a guy that wants to stay here and make a difference.... Makes a guy think.
Well, you get a call one day. A friendly check-in. "How's it going? You ready?" "Hell, yes. Let's go," sort of thing. The next day you find out you've been bought out.

I think Trotz just wanted a piece of that contract back to go shopping for his cereal winners. If Duchene was a locker room cancer, it didn't show. I mean, he wasn't clearly coasting and getting healthy scratched like Turris was.

Some rumours on ROR:

This is absolutely ridiculous. If you want to treat a guy like he has an NMC then give him an NMC and get a frigging cap hit discount. Otherwise the lack of protection is in itself telling the player he can be moved at any time.

Maybe more frustrating, is that this whole idea that these guys provide valuable leadership is getting us jack in terms of on ice results. If we actually let young guys play and be "mentored" there might be an argument, but otherwise this is stupid. If Trotz isn't learning from this season that the team needs talent and not more old high intangible guys, it's hopeless. ROR hasn't even been that good this year.

Going back to the previous 9 NHL drafts, we had exactly 3 guys in last night's lineup from those drafts that we picked and developed. L'Heureux, Svechkov, and Stastney. If you go back 10 NHL drafts, you can add Novak to make it 4 guys.
