You take that gamble if you think that one season was the norm and the past 1 1/2 have been exceptions. But it's as likely that he is another Johansen who has already had his best season before we even acquire him. Positive assets and taking on a $7M+ contract for a guy that's probably a 50-55 point player would be a tough swallow.
If things continue for him like this season, he gets bought out in 2 maybe 3 years.

If things revert to last season, you consider sucking it up until the end of his contract in 2030. You hate the contract and hope it doesnt impede the team. If you need the cap, you either retain and ship off or buy out.

If he gets back to 70 point range, you dont love or hate it as long as he doesnt do too much dumb stuff on the ice.

If he exceeds that then obviously it is a win for the team.

I dont think he will be a regular 30G scorer. Like RyJo, he needs to be with some goal scorers. Maybe he could be the key to unlocking Stamkos and March 5v5. Maybe he is the key to killing all cap flexibility for the next couple seasons. Idk. Im intrigued but this could seriously blow up in a bad way

La la land
Oh his value is more than a 1st, it just shouldn't be that and a really good young prospect. He's had one good year out of 3, that ain't someone you bet the farm on yet.
Not when he may be coming to the black hole of centers with potential

Now Josi to Van for E.P., RoR+++ to Buffalo for Byram and Cozens

Sarcsam. No clue what the heck to expect
I’m seriously fine with moving everything right now. Even Forsberg looks like he is skating in mashed potatoes.

Problem I also see on taking the Cozens risk is that Buffalo decided to bypass the "show me" contract. Now the risk isn't only him fully retuning to the player he was a season and a half ago (justifying the $7.1M/year part) but maintaining that for another 5.5 seasons.

I just don't see it, but if we get him, I hope he proves me wrong.

Every player looks like ass on this team. Think about that. We are just going to keep moving things around, hemorrhaging players who aren't productive, all the while the entire team has regressed which only points at one outcome.
This is my fear with a Cozens trade. I like Cozens and think if he goes to a competent team he turns out as at least a 2C. But I don't think we're a competent team at the moment so I could definitely see him crashing and burning.

Shit, if we have this issue for the length of his contract then I doubt any of us will be on here complaining about it.

You should NEVER be desperate as an NHL GM. If Trotz is there... why???? The team is already mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. (Ok, "effectively", not "mathematically"). There is really nothing that you should be "desperate" about. That shipped sailed more than a month ago when you didn't fire the coach. If you make a trade out of "desperation" right now, you are just doubling down on being a bad GM.

Watch us give up our own 1st in this trade... I will not be excited if that is the case.

I can live with a late 1st, Novak and a prospect/young player (preferably not ZLH), but over paying out of desperation is a bad look.

I think this gives fuel to the fact that Trotz does think he can fix this team for THIS year.

Yeah, we're not dealing our 1st.
I mean I really hope not, like really hope not...but I have lost any faith in Trotz already and we are only what 18 months into his tenure?

Sabres fan here. Is this guy legit?
Would say he is more media presence than reporter, but he's probably connected enough to know there is smoke there.

I wouldn't give up ANY 1st. But since we have 3, then if our GM is "that desperate" and we gave up Novak and Lauzon/Sissons +VGK/TB 1st... it would suck but... it could still work out? Maybe? If we get lucky with Cozens.

But I mean, take a breather here Trotz. WHY be desperate? This isn't going to save your season. Nor any seasons in the next 3 or 4. If you already f***ed up the roster with the Stamkos/March/Skjei/Saros contracts, then we're not getting out of that with a #2C guy, even if he pans out.

If he gives up our 1st, or any really significant prospect, I reiterate that I'm out.

Not gospel, but there seems to be enough smoke from various places to show Trotz is certainly interested and trying to obtain Cozens.

I was referring more to the "Trotz is getting desperate" line and everyone assuming we are giving up the farm for Cozens

It was the same with the rolling out Askarov multiple times before the drafts. Show your hand and someone's going to make you a sucker (not to mention probably doesn't sit great with the trade bait).

As said above though, the season's over, what's the urgency now? We're going to get taken by the f***ing Sabres' GM of all people.

I look at the Dubois trade where he was given for virtually free after a subpar season or 40 points and Cozens now almost 1.5 seasons deep into a mid 40 point pace and ask why should we have to pay much more then that? I understand there are differences in age and Cozen's caphit is better but that contract is also longer and Cozen's doesnt have the track record of being a 60+ point performer. Dubois 3 seasons of 60+ points and 28ish goals vs Cozens 1 season of 60+ points and 31 goals.

Couple in Kakko getting traded for next to nothing. Draft pedigree be damned. Dollar for dollar Kakkos contract is much better even though he hasnt hit the high that Cozen's has hit. He also doesnt have the commitment so you can just walk away no harm no foul. Cozen's doesnt rebound and it is a buyout
