Speculation: Armchair GM 2024-25 Season, Craig Conroy's Can Do Calgary Flames

There is no way they claim a dman, I think they start by going with 8 in the NHL. Signing Barrie actually gives them like 15 ahl or nhl level dmen. Claiming another would probably mean pushing one of the prospects to the ECHL or loaning them back to their overseas club
They will almost certainly try and sneak Harley through waivers tomorrow so unless Honzek gets sent down before the season starts they will most likely start with 7 dmen

My prediction for the full Flames roster and lines on opening night Oct 9. Out of all the fwds Pelletier is the least deserving to be there but he's no longer waivers exempt so it is what it is. A number of dmen don't deserve to be there but what other choice do we have?
Cooley is there but I expect he'll eventually be waived to the AHL sometime in October. I also expect Honzek to be sent down in October unless his play makes it impossible for Conroy to do so.

The Wranglers have 10 defensemen including AHL/ECHLers Holden Wale and Charles Martin and Jurmo should start in the ECHL.

As expected:

Schwindt
Pelletier on waivers

Less expected:

Cooley on waivers

Would of expected Rooney as the last Mohican (that got waived)..

Think the Flames could put in a claim on Raphael Lavoie?

6'4 RH Center that strong, quick and has a great shot. He's significantly outproduced Schwindt in the AHL the last 2 years while playing in the same division. I think he could be a good fit w/ Klapka and Lomberg, at least until Roon Dog is healthy

Overlooking the Sheep River
Did a deep dive on Raphael Lavoie. Bakersfield Condors listed him as a Center in his first pro season of 2020-21 (19 games). In his 2nd and 3rd seasons (117 games) with the Condors he's listed as a RW. His last season (66 games) there (2023-24) he's listed as a LW. He's played 7 games in the NHL and to my knowledge he's played those as a wing.
I think we can forget about having Lavoie play Center on the 4th line. Besides, from what I've heard, Rooney may not miss as much time as originally speculated as he appears to be doing fine right now according to Huska.

I am so torn between a nice start to the season and poor start to the Hagens lottery

We will lose a ton of games for the Hagens lottery and even if we don't get number 1 he is not the level of talent to be overly upset by that and we have 3-4 more years to get number 1 anyways.

As Calgary is my newly adopted west team, here's a thought:

Huberdeau-Poposil-Mantha is very similar to Huberdeau-Bennett-Duclair, which was the line that he put up 115 points. Mantha is a better version of Duclair while Poposil is a worse Bennett, but brings the body

Huh? I don't remember the relationship with Bennett ever being sour
He wanted out because of Geoff Ward’s bullshit. Then he rescinded the request when Sutter came. Treliving still traded him for a bag of pucks to protect Dillon Dube

It isn't but it's also not the greatest. Sam asked for a trade because he was getting moved throughout the lineup because the coach couldn't find a spot for him. It was also around the expansion draft where he looked like he could be the odd man out at the time for the protection list. When Darryl came and worked with him to give him a better role he was happy to stay but Treliving traded him anyway because the ball was already in motion.

I'd like to have Sam back but not for the price he's probably going to want. He would probably come back if you gave him a better defined role and having Huberdeau here would help because of chemistry but it probably isn't the best move long term. Bringing back Bennett just keeps the Flames spinning their wheels as a team in the middle of the standings.
