Saratoga 7, they had numbers in the wrong gate, and then were wrong in moving them (there's a coupled entry involved here too), and then all the while there's a late scratch, so they reload without every finishing. But if they never did it to begin with, or had it right, the horse wouldn't have scratched. Heavy favorite wins the race easy at any rate.

Chad Brown just ran the table of G1's on Arlington Million Day. That's a really tough thing to do on any big race day much less one that attracts international horses.

August 10, 2019
Part I.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Over $25,000,000 bet.
  • Summary: A good day for babies to remember for the future.
  • Ricardo Santana, Jr. had three wins. Junior Alvarado won twice.
  • Race 3: Decorated Invader (Junior Alvarado/Christophe Clement), in his second start, pummeled the competition in the stretch. The excellent turf trainer has a potential star.
  • Race 7: Gozilla (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) wired the field at 3-to-5 in his debut. Purchased for $350,000 in April, today's debut was stirring. Another to watch.

  • Race 8: Green Light Go (Junior Alvarado/Jimmy Jerkens) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Saratoga Special. The 2-year-old colt is a perfect 2-for-2. Another to watch. Alvarado had a fantastic week especially with future stars and at this point had won four of ten mounts spanning three days. He is 6th in wins and fourth among that group in winning percentage. Following the performance, Alvarado said "He's got a body like a 4-year-old and his mind is like an old horse's mind. He's very focused. There's nothing like a 2-year-old about him." A Grade I could be next in just his third start. UPDATE: Per Paulick Report: "(It is) likely the colt would make his next start in the Grade 1, $500,000 Champagne on October 5 at Belmont."

  • Race 9: Got Stormy (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Mark Casse), a 4-year-old filly who won exactly a week ago under Tyler Gaffalione, won the $500,000 Grade I Fourstardave. She was the lone filly (there was a mare who ran) in the race. An invitation to the Breeders' Cup Mile Turf awaits. The pace setter ran the 1/2 mile in 44 seconds. What?! That helped the winner set a course record 1:32 flat. Staggering fractions.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Nik Juarez, the meet's leading rider, won three times.

Part 2...

Delaware Park (Delaware):

  • Jeremy Rose, who had one ride earlier in the day at Laurel (Maryland), won his lone mount here. His impressive 2019 shows a 35% winning percentage at mostly mid-Atlantic tracks.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Track conditions: The turf was yielding. It was a subpar day for the track.
  • Race 4: Lonely Drifter (Julio Correa/Anthony Farrior) finished second. The 4-year-old filly, bred in South Carolina, exited the race 9 7-1-1 this year.
  • Race 9: A 9-year old Alabama bred had 17 lifetime starts.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Card: In its third day after a hiatus since 2013, the 11-race card had four purses worth $100,000.
  • Simulcast: First glance, the graphics are clear and the info easy to read.
  • Sheldon Russell won three times on seven mounts.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Track conditions: Off the turf again.
  • Wealth spread: Five riders won twice (Luca Panici, Reylu Gutierrez, Cristian Torres, Miguel Vasquez and Albin Jimenez) on a 12-race card.
  • Rainbow Six: Over $141,000 was added. More than $560,000 will be the start total for Sunday.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Chad Brown ran a stunning succession of victories by winning the four graded stakes races that ended the card -- three of which were Grade I. He did have multiple horses entered in those three Grade I races but to win four straight graded stakes is substantial and I would imagine a first in track history. Each win was on turf, his specialty. He is probably a lock to repeat as Eclipse Award Trainer of the Year in North America.
  • Race 12: Café Americano (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown), sent off as the 5-to-2 favorite and whose lone loss in four starts was with a different rider, won the $100,000 Grade 3 Pucker Up.
  • Race 11: Bricks and Mortar (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown), sent off as the 1-to-2 favorite, won the Grade I $1,000,000 Arlington Million. The win was a sixth straight and 12 10-0-2 overall with close to $4,900,000 in earnings. The 5-year-old received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Turf.

  • Race 10: Valid Point (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) improved to 3 3-0-0 by winning the Grade I $500,000 Secretariat. Prior wins came at Gulfstream and Belmont. The favorite failed to hit the board and the longest shot in the race finished second.
  • Race 9: Sistercharlie (John Velazquez/Chad Brown) improved to 12 9-3-0 after winning the $600,000 Grade I Beverly D. The 5-year-old Irish-bred, sent off as the 2-to-5 favorite, made history in being the first repeat winner of this race. Brown won this race for the sixth time, the all-time high, including, remarkably, the last five. Sistercharlie, who has won five straight and has earned over $3.2 million, received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Fillies and mare Turf.

  • Race 8: Dabo (Jose Valdivia, Jr./Dale Romans) loves the track and won the $75,000 race. The 3-year-old is 4-for-4 at Arlington and 0-for-7 elsewhere.
  • Handle: I did not see the official handle posted but my guess is somewhere around $8 million.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • McLean Robertson won five straight races, the latter four of which were stakes. His run began with the fifth race and ended with a second place finish in the 10th. Among the wins were two $100,000 stakes, the Minnesota Oaks and the Minnesota Derby. He was on a roll and a mission tonight in Minnesota. Let's see Chad Brown match that!
  • Orlando Mojica rode four of McLean Robertson's winners and ended the day 6 4-1-0. For his efforts, he was named North American Jockey of the Week.
  • McLean Robertson has won 11 of the past 19 races he has entered (58%).
Del Mar (California):
  • Flavien Prat won his first five mounts, through six races. A staggering run.
  • Race 7: Mike Smith won on his birthday. Per Equibase, Smith is the 23rd winningest rider in North America history.
  • Race 8: Collusion Illusion (Joe Talamo/Mark Glatt) paid $17.40 in winning the Grade 2 $200,000 Best Pal Stakes for 2-year-olds. The Florida-bred is 2-for-2 lifetime.

  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 6 Jackpot (2-5-6-2-5-3) paid $106,640.40.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 9: Desert Ride (Steven Bahen/Neil Howard) won the $225,000 stakes for fillies bred in Canada.

Mike Smith is only the 23rd winningest rider in North American history?

That seems impossible.

Mike Smith is only the 23rd winningest rider in North American history?

That seems impossible.

Smith has picked and chosen his rides for a while and with that comes limited opportunities. The person who is #1 is Russell Baze who rode mostly in northern California. He has more than twice as many wins as Smith but with roughly 20,000 more starts. Smith is third in money won behind Johnny V. and Castellano and to many that is the more important figure.

August 11, 2019

Saratoga (New York):
  • Race 9: Eyeinthesky (Joel Rosario/Mark Casse) won the $100,000 Galway Stakes.
  • Race 1: Fireball Shot (Eric Cancel/Phil Bauer) won the opener and broke his maiden in his 19th start. The trainer won for the second time at the meet. He normally trains in the middle part of the country.
  • Joel Rosario, Jose Ortiz and Ricardo Santana, Jr. each won twice. Santana, who has five wins at the Spa the last two days combined, won twice for Steve Asmussen.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Rainbow Six: $596,772 to open the next day of racing.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 1: Take Charge Erica (David Cohen/Aaron Shorter) was the longest shot on the board and paid $63.20 in victory.
  • Race 3: The $.50 Pick 3 was over $2,000.
  • Race 8: Go Google Yourself (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Paul McGee) won the $125,000 Groupie Doll Stakes.
  • Race 9: Gray Magician (Corey Lanerie/Peter Miller), who finished 19th of 19 in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, won the $100,000 Ellis Park Derby by passing Knicks Go (Gabriel Saez/Ben Colebrook) who led most of the way. Super Steed (Calvin Borel/Larry Jones) was a non-factor in his first race since winning the Southwest Stakes in February and with it some Kentucky Derby hype before being sidelined with injury.
Emerald Downs (Washington):
  • Race 7: Law Abidin Citizen (Abel Cedillo/Mark Glatt) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Longacres Mile Handicap in a close finish.

Del Mar (California):
  • Race 8: The $.20 Rainbow Six was hit for $69,564.
  • Race 7: Danuska's My Girl (Giovanni Franco/Jerry Hollendorfer) won the $101,000 Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap. The Hall of Fame trainer won for the first time at the meet and since his return from a suspension related to reported violations at Santa Anita.

Woodbine (Ontario):

  • Race 9: Mr. Ritz (Patrick Husbands/Josie Carroll), bred in Great Britain, wired the field and won the $125,000 Grade 3 Seagrams Cup and paid $12.50. The runner up was Thor's Rocket (Justin Stein/Paul Buttegieg), the second longest shot on the board at 66-to-1. Mr. Havercamp (Eurico Da Silva/Catherine Day Phillipps) was sent off the favorite but failed to hit the board.

Deauville (France):
  • Romanised (Billy Lee/Ken Condon) won his first Group 1 in nearly 15 months in the $1.12 million Prix Jacques le Marois, a victory that was part of the Breeders' Cup (Mile) "Win and You're In" series. However, the connections may decide to pass on the event and race in France.

Orlando Mojica was named North America's Jockey of the Week. He won Derbies in two countries and rode 10 winners on 21 mounts for his two main trainers McLean Robertson and Robertino Diodoro.

Much was said for Chad Brown's remarkable achievement Saturday at Arlington (Illinois) but as I stated in the daily summary above the feat by McLean Robertson at Minnesota, while not nearly as grandiose based on the purses, deserves special attention. Mojica finished the week 14 7-2-1 for Robertson, including winning the Minnesota Oaks and Derby at Canterbury, and 7 3-1-0 for Diodoro including winning the Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia (Manitoba) in his lone ride at that track.

His total was 21 10-3-1. Ten wins on 21 mounts should be recognized in such a way.

==========================

Per Zenyatta's website, she is in foal with a Candy Ride daughter. I think that would be her fourth foal.

Lawrence Best just dropped $775,000 on a New York bred, the highest paid for that any horse in that state, He is relatively new to the racing game having spent millions the last three years and that includes individual purchases for that figure. Best is the former founder and CFO of Boston Scientific. He is looking for that dream runner. The latest addition to his collection is a Malibu Moon filly.

Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Race 6: Mike Luzzi snapped a 48-race losing skid with a rare trip outside a NYRA track. Every race this year has been at either Aqueduct, Belmont or Saratoga -- the three NYRA tracks; Finger Lakes is not part of the NYRA. He last won on May 12. His last ride outside a NYRA track was in August 2018. His last win outside the state of New York was in June 2018 at Suffolk Downs (Mass.).
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Race 4: The winner paid $209.60, the fourth highest win bet in track history, after being sent off 103-to-1. That was part of the fun. The full payouts: $209.60/$60.00/$22.60, $28.40/$21.00 for the second place horse and $18.60 for third place. The $2 exacta was a stunning $4,419.80. The $.10 super paid over $25,000.

  • Race 6: The $.50 tri paid over $1,500.
August 14, 2019

Saratoga (New York):

  • John Velazquez entered today with the paltry sum of six wins at the meet; however, he won three times on four mounts to bring his meet total to nine wins.
  • Wesley Ward won with both of his starters, each ridden by John Velazquez in consecutive races.
  • Race 9: New York finales, again! The longest shot on the board won at 26-to-1 which contributed to the $.20 Pick 6 to be hit for $26k. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $13k.
  • Race 7: Kimari (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward) won the $100,000 Bolton Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. Luca Panici, who rarely races outside of Gulfstream (Florida), finished third on board Champagne Humor (tr. Antonio Sano) at 12-to-1. Good for Luca!

  • Race 3: Regalian (Tammi Piermarini/Karl Grusmark) won. Piermarini is now stationed at Finger Lakes (New York) after a brief stint at Philly following the 2014 closing of full meets at Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts) where she won many of her 2,500+ wins and continued to ride there in their subsequent boutique meets and as recently as this year. Piermarini is a New England legend and Hall of Famer who is the third winningest female jockey in North America history. I am not sure how often she has ridden at the Spa but the recent past is nearly absent and for her to be victorious here has to be one of her recent biggest thrills. She is in her 50s and a mother. The horse failed to win at Suffolk Downs twice earlier this year. The trainer, who has been a conditioner since the 1960s, is in his 80s and uses Piermarini often but it is also rare to see his name at the Spa. Excellent story for some long-time veterans in this great sport, to win at arguably the most prestigious meet of the racing calendar.
  • Race 2: Jose Ortiz won the first non-hurdles race. He is the winningest rider at the meet with 36 wins.

Certainly good news for Philly, Maximum Security is the second desirable horse to skip a race in New York for the September 21 card at Parx. Guarana skipped the Alabama Stakes, to be held this weekend, for the Parx Cotillion.

Unrelated, Game Winner will also not run in the August 24 Travers due to a virus.

Maximum Security to Skip Travers, Point to Pennsylvania Derby

Dual Grade I winner and leading 3-year-old Maximum Security (New Year’s Day) will skip the GI Runhappy Travers S. Aug. 24 at Saratoga and point to the GI Pennsylvania Derby Sept. 21 at Parx, trainer Jason Servis said Thursday. Servis said the decision was made because the colt “still is not 100%.”

“I don’t like where he’s at. He’s not eating the way I want him to eat and he’s not carrying the weight I’d like to see him carry,” Servis said. “I just want to make sure he’s 100% for his next race and he’s not there right now. The best thing is to wait until he is 100% and point to the Pennsylvania Derby.”

Saratoga (New York):
  • Race 3: Uncontested (Jose Ortiz/Thomas Amoss) wired the field and equaled the track record for seven furlongs on dirt at 1:20.52 set in 1978.
  • Race 4: Mystic Lancelot (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher), a 2-year-old colt, won his maiden race. All of sudden, Velazquez is warming. That was his fourth straight win spanning two days. He is 19 5-8-2 the last five racing days at the Spa.
  • Race 8: Carrera Cat (Rajiv Maragh/John Morrison) won the $100,000 feature. Not exactly common names to win a New York feature. Additionally, the Ortiz brothers finished last and second-to-last in the race. Rare indeed.
  • Javier Castellano and Joel Rosario rode two winners apiece. No trainer had more than one win.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Race 9: To Your Health (Keivan Serrano/M.C. Reardon) pulled the bomb of the day at 75-to-1 in the finale. The winner paid $153.40. This is the trainer's second time with the gelding after the claim. She won for just the second time in 2019 with her 59th starter. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $21,000.
  • Jockeys: Sheldon Russell and Daniel Centeno lead the rider standings with four wins apiece through four racing days at the new meet.
  • Trainers: In the revival meet, 33 trainers have won to date less by Jamie Ness's four wins.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Opening day: The meet opened today and runs through September 29.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 5: Leucothea (Abel Cedillo/Peter Miller) broke her maiden in her second start by 14 1.2 lengths. The lopsided victory came with a 92 Beyer rating which was the highest for any 2-year-old filly in North America this year.

August 18: Century Mile (3); Del Mar (2); Deauville in France (one Breeders' Cup race)
August 19: None
August 20: None
August 21: York Racing in England (one Breeders' Cup race).
August 22: York Racing in England (one Breeders' Cup race).
August 23: York Racing in England (one Breeders' Cup race).

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $16,000,000+ bet.
  • Riders: Javier Castellano, Manny Franco and the Ortiz brothers each won twice and combined to win 8 of the 10 races.
  • Race 10: The unexpected can be the norm in New York finales and it happened again today. The super included 11-to-1, 9-1, 48-1 and 25-1 shots which paid $4,600+ for $.10. The $.50 tri paid over $1,600.
  • Race 9: Another Miracle (Manny Franco/Gary Contessa) won the feature race, run on turf, and the $100,000 purse. The winner became the first offspring to 2015 Triple Crown sensation American Pharoah to win a stakes in North America. The top two finishers were both own in part by Leonard Green who has owned T-breds for close to 50 years.

  • Race 7: A tight finish in which Joel Rosario held off a charging John Velazquez.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 6: The two longest shots at 32-to-1 and 33-to-1 finished 1-2 and the resulting $2 exacta paid $938.20.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 10: A 47-to-1 shot won the finale. The $.20 Pick 6 began and ended with bombs and paid over $28,000 to all winners.
  • Race 5: A 35-to-1 shot was the victor.
  • Rainbow Six: The carryover will start at $654,000. Over $150,000 was added today.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 8: The $.20 Pick 6 paid more than $84,000.
  • Riders: Flavien Prat (25) and Drayden Van Dyke (19) are the two leading riders at the meet.
  • Trainers: Doug O'Neill (16) and Peter Miller (13) lead the trainer's standings this meet.
  • Calendar: The meet closes September 2 and then Los Alamitos conducts T-bred racing from Sept. 6-Sept. 22 before Santa Anita hosts the Breeders' Cup during its Sept. 27-Nov. 3 meet.

CANADIAN DERBY

What: Grade III. Some observers claim this is among the best Canadian Derby fields ever assembled.
Where: Century Mile Racetrack and Casino, Leduc County, Alberta (Edmonton)
When: Sunday, August 18, 2019, Race 10
Time: 6:45 pm Mountain Time (8:45 pm Eastern Time)
Who: 3-year-olds
Distance: 1 1/4 miles
Surface: Dirt
Purse: $250,000
Television: TVG 24/7 horse racing channel.
Live Stream: Live Stream
History: Inaugurated in 1930. This is the 90th running. This is the first time Century Mile has hosted the event having opened earlier this year. Northlands Park, which is now a closed facility, in Edmonton held the event from 1957 through 2018. Before 1957, the now shuttered Polo Park in Winnipeg held the event.
Preview: JONES: This Canadian Derby is stacked

The 90th running of the Canadian Derby stacks up as arguably one of the best fields, race cards and race weekends in Edmonton horse-race history, to end the exceedingly shabby season that was exactly the opposite.

“This year’s Canadian Derby is one of the best in recent memory — if not ever,” said rookie racing director Matt Jukich in revealing the full starting gate field of 12 horses for the $250,000 graded stakes race at Wednesday morning’s draw for post positions at Canada’s only mile-long racetrack West of Woodbine.

“This field is stacked with talent from all over North America,” enthused Jukich, who was forced to put together a plethora of races with six, five and even four horses in a season that had a vast majority of only seven races per card.

August 17, 2019 (Part 1):
  • Chad Brown had five winners and won three graded stakes races across multiple tracks.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: More than $25,000,000 was wagered.
  • Chad Brown solidified his lead on top the trainer standings with four wins and ended the day 8 4-1-1. He likely will repeat as the North American Trainer of the Year for 2019.
  • Javier Castellano is in a groove. He finished 9 3-3-1 today. His 29 wins is third at the meet. He has won 7 of his last 17 starts.
  • Jose Ortiz added three wins to his meet leading total of 42, seven more than his brother Irad who is in second place.
  • Race 6: Carotari (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Brian Lynch) set the track record for 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at 1:00.1 at 7-to-1.
  • Race 7: American Butterfly (Luis Saez/Wayne Lukas) upset the maiden special weight race with a purse of $90,000. The American Pharoah baby paid $46.20. The $2 Pick 3 paid $3.245. Lukas, the Hall-of-Fame trainer, ended the day 1-for-21 at the meet but left winning at least one race in 36 straight Saratoga meets.

  • Race 8: Oleksandra (Joel Rosario/Neil Drysdale), bred in Australia, neared the track record for 5 1/2 furlongs on turf set earlier in the day (off by .19) by winning the $100,000 race for fillies and mares 3-year-old-and up at 4-to-1. Miss Gossip, the longest shot on the board at 33-1 under Junior Alvarado, roared down the middle of the course to outduel Ruby Notion to complete the exacta and pay $20.20 in the middle.
  • Race 9: Varenka (Javier Castellano/Graham Motion) and Regal Glory (Luis Saez/Chad Brown) battled to a dead heat for win in the Grade 2 $200,000 Lake Placid in what may have been the race of the day. Slow fractions early but the dramatic finish caused many oohs and aahs as it was nearly three across-the-wire and judges debated and determined the proper finish.

  • Race 10: Dunbar Road (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) paid $5.50 in winning the $600,000 Grade I Alabama Stakes. The horse had a prior win on a wet track and the rains came just in time to make this race a sloppy one. Street Band (Sophie Doyle/Larry Jones) ran well but finished third in the jockey's first career start at the Spa.

  • Animal Kingdom, who won the 2011 Kentucky Derby, sired three winners today including two in stakes.
  • Weather: The 1st and 3rd were removed from turf but rains held off until a downpour late in the afternoon around the time between races 9 and 10. There was excessive lightning nearby, too.
  • Empire Six: New York's version of the Pick 6 will have a mandatory payout today. The pool begins at $438,518.
Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Races 1 and 2: Had the same order of finish 1-5-2-4 for the superfectas.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 4: Horologist (Angel Suarez/John Mazza), who was bred in New Jersey, won the Grade 3 $150,000 Monmouth Oaks. The filly has won four in a row but took a major step un in class to defeat Jaywalk (Joe Bravo/John Servis) who had earned over $1.6 million and was sent off at 1-to-5. Mazza, the New Jersey-born winning trainer who is in his 80s and has been training since the 1960s, won his first graded stakes since 1992 when Great Navigator, buried in the Monmouth Park infield, won the Hopeful at Saratoga. There was much elation from the winning rider as he crossed the wire:
  • Nik Juarez, the meet's leading rider, won four times and ended the day 11 4-3-2.
  • Card: An extensive 13-race card with over $4.5 million bet.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Carol Cedeno had four wins on eight mounts and ended the day with a victory in a race of Arabians (which I do not think counts in the official tallies). She is second at the meet with 38 wins, three behind leader Alex Cintron.
  • Race 6: Pride Leader (Brittany Scampton/John Sgavicchio) broke his maiden in his 32nd start. The rider won for the 12th time in her career. The trainer won for the first time in 21 career starts. The runner up was the lone first-time starter in the race.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Julian Pimentel won four times with seven mounts and completed his day with a natural hat trick beginning with the 8th race.
  • Card: Much had to do with in-state breeding and festivities. Purses included four at $75,000 each. It was a day to be proud of Maryland racing.
  • Penultimate Day of the Meet: This is the second-to-last day of the meet. Laurel is dark until September 6. From Aug. 23 - Sept. 2, Timonium holds its annual meet.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Race 4: The very now-seasoned Chuckie (oops) Charles Lopez won at 47-to-1 and paid $97.60. He began riding professionally in January 1979.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 1: The place horse paid $55.20. The exacta was a remarkable $1,359.40. The tri returned over $8.900. The $1 super paid in excess of $35,000. That is one way to start a day.
  • Race 4:The top five finishers went off at 11-to-1, 33-1, 17-1, 15-1 and 57-1. The numbers were 12-14-13-10 to complete the superfecta. The payouts were high but nothing staggering.
  • Race 12: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $30,000. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $67,000.
  • Dick Cardenas has less than 100 lifetime wins but two came today on three mounts.
  • Cristian Torres failed to win on nine mounts and has now gone 29 straight races without a win. A bump in his rookie season but nonetheless still the leading bug rider in North America this year in my view.
  • Rainbow Six: The Rainbow Six Jackpot will begin at more than $700,000 for tomorrow's card. Over $240,000 was added today. I don't think it will reach $1,000,000 for Sunday's card but it could.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 8: The only horse with a prior start won this race in a field of 11.

Del Mar (California):

  • Handle: Over $24,000,000 bet.
  • Race 3: Mr. Vargas (Joe Talamo/Brian Koriner) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Green Flash Handicap.
  • Race 6: A $.50 tri with Florent Georux, Mike Smith and John Velazquez paid over $700.
  • Race 7: Acclimate (Florent Geroux/Phil D'Amato) paid $16.60 in winning the Grade 2 $250,000 Del Mar Handicap and with it an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Turf. The 5-year-old California bred was in the outside post and had the fewest money earned in the race.
  • Race 8: Fighting Mad (Joe Talamo/Bob Baffert) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Torrey Pines.
  • Race 9: Cambier Parc (John Velazquez/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $300,000 Del Mar Oaks with an explosive run in the stretch.

  • Race 10: Higher Power (Flavien Prat/John Sadler) paid $21.20 and won the $1,000,000 Grade I Pacific Classic and with it an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Classic. From the track caller, "He never gave them a chance" in describing the win.

  • Jockeys with 2+ wins: John Velazquez made a rare Del Mar appearance and won three times with six starters. Florent Geroux, Flavien Prat and Joe Talamo won twice each.
  • Trainers with 2+ wins: Richard Baltas trained four winners with 12 starters. One winner paid over $40 and another more than $20. John Sadler won twice.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 10: Tone Broke (Rafael Hernandez/Steve Asmussen) won the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown by winning the 128th edition of the $400,000 Breeders' Stakes for 3-year-old Canadian-breds. He won the last two events of the 2019 Triple Crown after a third place in the first leg. The finish for second place today was extremely close.

Del Mar will host the 2021 Breeders' Cup on November 5-6, 2021. The host site beyond 2021 has not been named. Either Churchill Downs or Keeneland in Kentucky is most likely though an outsider such as Laurel (Maryland) could be named. Today, the Breeders' Cup revealed the logo for 2021:
