Since the Kentucky Derby was moved to September, another installment in an anniversary date of a past Kentucky Derby.

Part 1 -- 1970 -- Dust Commander -- 50 years ago -- Post #827
Part 2 -- 2000 -- Fusaichi Pegasus -- 20 years ago -- Post #852
Part 3 -- 1990 -- Unbridled -- 30 years ago -- Post #858

Fusaichi Pegasus: The 2000 Kentucky Derby was won by Fusaichi Pegasus in what was the fifth fastest time recorded by a winner. The colt was purchased for $4,000,000 in the July 1998 Keeneland yearling sale by Japanese interests. FuPeg, as he became known, was the first favorite to win the Kentucky Derby since Spectacular Bid in 1979. He entered the Derby with a win in the Wood Memorial. After his Derby win, he won just one of three races which included a loss to Red Bullet in the Preakness Stakes. FuPeg ended his career with six victories in nine attempts. He was sold to stud for a record price of $64 million. He is still kickin' as a 23-year-old and his stud fee is down to $7,500.

Kent Desormeaux: The Cajun remains active while now plying his craft at Golden Gate in California. Desormeaux has won over 6,000 career races including three wins in the Kentucky Derby. He is in the National Hall of Fame. He was twice named Eclipse Jockey of the Year.

Neil Drysdale: The English-born trainer has been California-based since 1975. He is in the National Hall of Fame. He also trained A.P. Indy who was one of the great sires of all-time.

Didn't the place close and then reopen as a year substitute for River Downs before that track became Belterra? In essence, two closing days?

A simulcast graphic I like! Easy to read the numbers.

As far as the Twins, here ya go...

In 1997, weary of seeing Beulah crowded out of the simulcast market by signals from better tracks, Weiss came up with his signature move. He hired two young, attractive women who had been working as mutuel clerks to host the simulcast show, and they became an instant brand and industry-wide phenomenon. Blatant sexism it was, but all-sources wagering almost doubled within two years, no doubt the result of older men in simulcast parlors paying closer attention to the Beulah signal.

Requiem for a racetrack: Beulah Park is closing, leaving many horsemen behind

As I suspected a couple of weeks ago when the Kentucky Derby was first announced to run in September, I tried to compile updates for racing, the Kentucky dates do not seem concrete and the article penned yesterday used the word "confusion." I contacted a couple of people at the time since the day that I found striking was Sept. 16 (more so than Sept. 6).

As of now both Kentucky Downs and Churchill Downs are scheduled to run on September 16 but I wonder if Churchill's meet will have date changes from what is listed below.

Churchill Downs considers holding its spring meet without spectators

Per Bloodhorse, "The next full meeting of the KHRC is scheduled for April 21."

Among those East coast jockeys without any mounts through at least this weekend:
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. (concerns with virus)
  • Jose Ortiz (ongoing wrist injury)
  • Javier Castellano (tested positive for the current virus)
  • John Velazquez (was scheduled yesterday at Gulf, perhaps returned to NY)
  • Manny Franco (opted not to ride as of yesterday; returned to NY)
  • Edgar Prado (could be due to concerns)
  • Paco Lopez (I didn't see a reason... but he is scheduled to ride April 10)
They are often on the NY-FL circuit depending on the time of the year but remain inactive.

Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • J. Kent Sweezey had one of the best days of his young career as he won his first three races and finished 6 3-0-0. He began training in 2017 and has under 100 lifetime wins. He was an assistant to Christophe Clement (Florida), Jimmy Jerkens (New York) and Eoin Harty (California).
  • Race 1: Won by Venezuelan-born jockey Samy Camacho who is so hot he is causing people to use SPF-30 on beaches 10 miles away. He is now within four wins of Antonio Gallardo for meet lead. Back in 2018, I mentioned how I liked what I saw in his riding abilities. He was almost nondescript until then but he is putting together a third straight successful year.
  • Race 2: Won by South African-born jockey Leslie Mawing. Now in his mid-40s, he won his first race in the US at Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho the same track in which Hall of Famer Gary Stevens broke his maiden.
  • Race 3: Won by Scottish-born jockey Gary Wales whose tack was in Massachusetts, Washington state and Florida the past few years. He needs to do southern Cal to hit all four corners of the U.S. racing map.
  • Race 4: Won by Peruvian-born jockey Huber Villa-Gomez. Talk to the Media (Villa-Gomez/Lindsey Marie Raines) paid $104.40/$34.80/$12.40. The trainer has less than 20 lifetime wins. The place horse paid $33.60/$17.80. The $2 exacta paid $2,112.40. The $.50 tri returned $4,902.50. The $.10 super returned more than $4,600. Did someone want a bomb so loud that it shook surrounding states? It happened here.
  • Race 5: Won by Puerto Rican-born jockey Angel Surez who broke his maiden in Philadelphia about eight years ago. The $2 double paid over $850. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $22,000.
  • Race 6: Won by Bronx-born jockey Wilmer Garcia.
  • Race 7: Won by midwesterner Scott Speith who has been riding T-breds since the mid 1980s and is approaching his mid-50s. The jockey has been riding at Tampa Bay for quite some time and achieved his 4,000th lifetime win at the track in 2012.
  • Race 8: Won by Mexican-born jockey Jesus Castanon.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 2: Tyler Gaffalione became the first jockey to win four races this meet. Kenny McPeek became the first trainer to win three races this meet.
  • Race 3: Luis Saez lost all seven of his races yesterday but first time out today he won.
  • Races 4-5-6: Make that 5... makes that 6... make that 7 wins at the meet for Florida-boy Tyler Gaffalione. Three wins in a row, the natural hat trick. Seven wins in about 27 hours of racing.
  • Race 6: Candy Machine (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) purchased for $475,000 won his second lifetime race. Owner Peter Brant, married to model Stephanie Seymour, has a long history in horse racing.
  • Race 7: Interest (Luis Saez/Saffie Joseph) won by a flared nostril at 4-to-5 over a charging #8 sent off at 12-to-1. Tough beat for the runner up.
  • Race 8: W W Fitzy (Marcos Meneses/Scott Becker), an Illinois-bred, improved to 13 7-1-1 lifetime. Becker trains in Illinois and Florida for the most part and is very consistent at 25% lifetime.
  • Race 9: An 0-for-13 maiden wins at 12-to-1.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 2: The $1 exacta paid $342.
  • Walter De La Cruz won for the second time on the card. The $.50 Pick 4 was a stellar $11,000+.
  • Joe Talamo had the riding triple and extended his lead at the meet. Current standings: Joe Talamo (40 wins), Ricardo Santana, Jr., (36), David Cohen (36) and Martin Garcia (35).

Kentucky Derby anniversary recaps...

Part 1 -- 1970 -- Dust Commander -- 50 years ago -- Post #827
Part 2 -- 2000 -- Fusaichi Pegasus -- 20 years ago -- Post #852
Part 3 -- 1990 -- Unbridled -- 30 years ago -- Post #858

Unbridled: My favorite horse of all-time has proven to be one of the best sires in history. 1:35-2:30 on this video is one of the most indelible moments in the history of sport. Any sport! Unbridled won eight times in 24 starts and proved to be one of the top sires of this era. He is also the most recent horse (Grindstone, Red Bullet, Empire Maker, respectively) to sire three different winners of the Triple Crown races. His career began with three races at Arlington Park and his won his debut race by more than 10 lengths. He won the Florida Derby in one of the slowest times recorded which led Carl Nafzger to later state "Time is only really important if you are in jail. Pace makes the race." He won the Kentucky Derby at 10-to-1. Unbridled became the fifth, of six, Derby winners bred in Florida.

Craig Perret:
The New Orleans-born Perret picked up the mount when legendary Pat Day, who rode Unbridled to victory in the 1990 Florida Derby, opted to ride Summer Squall instead. The pair finished 1-2 with a 7-11 exacta. Perret was inducted into the National Hall of Fame in 2019.

Carl Nafzger:
The Texas native was a former bull rider in rodeo and one of the best in America back in the 1960s. The respected and classy gentleman was inducted into the National Racing Hall of Fame in 2008. He returned to the Kentucky Derby winner's circle with Street Sense in 2007.

Mrs. Genter:
The owner's husband helped invent the electric toaster. Both were avid fans of racing who owned horses for half a century. Husband Harold passed in 1981 before he would have witnessed his dream of winning the Kentucky Derby an event to duo attended for the first time in 1938. An electrifying moment in his honor was witnessed by millions in 1990. She was a longtime resident of Minnesota but passed away two years after the Derby at the age of 94.

The problem with moving the Preakness to September is that Pimlico only races in May. The issue with revenue for the city of Baltimore (Pimlico) vs. state of Maryland (Laurel) is another matter. Stronach owns both tracks so that shouldn't be much of an issue.

They're probably waiting for NYRA to do something. Belmont Stakes is still scheduled for June 6. They have the ability of loading up Saratoga if they are willing and able. The Triple Crown is not going to be the Triple Crown this year, so might as well just do what's best and safest for themselves and the track.

We're going to need about 73 days in September to handle all of the rescheduled sporting events, "regular" season games, festivals, movie releases, concerts, weddings, doctor's appointments, etc. I'm already overbooked, lol.

^If that is accurate, Kentucky Downs has revamped its slate again. Considering the popularity of the short meet, the influence will be the same barring whatever lingering effects of the current economic situation. However, that map states five racing dates for Ky. Downs when initially they were granted six. There is a meeting on April 21 per the KHRC website.

  • Tom Amoss... that tribute shown during the Fox Sports broadcast to his father was incredibly moving. R.I.P. to the WW2 vet. He passed away due to the ongoing virus.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Antonio Gallardo has won twice through four races. he is the leading rider at the meet and arguably the most successful rider at Tampa Bay in recent years. He is being challenged for meet leader by Samy Camacho but cue Amy Winehouse because right now its "No no no."
  • Michelle Yu just talked a horse in the 5th with "serious mental issues" and then said he was gelded and that "loss of testosterone will make him focus on his job." Ouch, Michelle!
  • Race 7: Good race... .and now a stewards' inquiry posted but ruled no change.
  • Race 8: The #13 from the far outside, an also eligible, at 11-to-1 got the win in the finale.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: The official handle wasn't released through Equibase but based on some quick match I would estimate between 13-15 million.
  • Tyler Gaffalione and Luis Seaz each won three times.
  • Race 1: Tyler Gaffalione won for the eighth time this meet. And the colt, who finally broke his maiden in this his 10th start, was once sold to Carlo Vaccarezza! I have no idea of this trainer. There is a trainer at Gulf of whom I am unfamiliar?! I am intrigued. Matthew Brice O'Connor?... UPDATE: You know I'd find the answer. Second-time trainer with one horse who finished in the money prior. He is a recent graduate of the University of Arizona (22 or so years of age) and is from Brooklyn, NY. He has ties to Vinny Viola (Florida Panthers) and is the nephew to Anthony Bonomo, all three who were part owners of Always Dreaming who won the Kentucky Derby in 2017.
FullSizeRender.jpg-206x300.jpeg
  • Race 2: Tyler Gaffalione goes 2-for-2. His 9th win at the meet.
  • Race 3: This exacta should be big bazookas (paid $234). The winning horse is no longer a maiden. Winning trainer Elizabeth Dobles who I think remains in quarantine from going to Dubai. Winning owners? You know it! Imaginary Stables and the gang from Philly/south Jersey.
  • Race 4: Mario Fuentes, who recently shed his 10-pound bug status, won his sixth career race and first as a 7-pound bug boy. He is 21 years of age and from Chile.
  • Race 5: With a 34-to-1 shot winning, the $2 exacta returned over $900.
  • Race 6: Mario Fuentes won for the second time today, on a 17-to-1 shot. This Pick 3 should be gigantic.... oh brother, for $.50 the Pick 3 paid $3,374. That qualifies as gigantic.
  • Race 7: Another bomber, this one at 20-1.
  • Race 8: Tyler Gaffalione rode his third winner of the day, 10th win of the meet. The $.50 Pick 3 paid $1,075. The $.50 Pick 4 paid $102,885.80.

  • Race 9: Luis Saez won the first of consecutive races.
  • Race 10: Halladay (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) gave the jockey back-to-back wins in what track caller Pete Aiello said "A complete game victory..." in wiring the field.
  • Race 11: Joel Rosario did what he does best: close.
  • Race 12: Luis Saez wired the field for his third win of the afternoon. Trainer Robert Hess, who moved some of his stock to Florida from California, won for the second time. More than $3.7 million was bet into the finale.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: over $10,000,000.
  • Martin Garcia won three times. He is having a rebirth at this meet since leaving California.
  • Mike Smith and select other riders opted not to ride today since there was a change of protocol for visiting riders.
  • Race 1: Kelsi Harr may be the hottest bug girl in America right now. She just wired the field in slop. Not bad when you ride for Wayne Lukas even at this point in his career. I got picked up for second with the Borel connection and otherwise would have had a pretty exacta with a 4-to-1 on top of 7-to-2.
  • Race 2: Almost another gate-to-wire performance but Alex Birzer closed with a nice rally to win. Birzer has been around for many years. He once led the meet at the Woodlands in Kansas City, Kansas when that state had T-bred racing. Last I heard, an investor was trying to sway locals to reintroduce legislation to permit T-bred racing in Kansas (updated: denied!).
  • Race 3: Another closer from the outside, similar to the prior race. California-bred with Cali connections the victor.
  • Race 6: The 1 and 1A finished topped the ticket in a rare entry win-place finish.
  • Race 7: Bill Mott won at Oaklawn, a first since 2014, a track he rarely ships in recent years. He is the seventh winningest trainer in North America all-time.
  • Race 8: Finnick the Fierce (Martin Garcia/Rey Hernandez) won via DQ and broke a 4-race losing streak. He paid $14.40. He finished second at 87-to-1 in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.
  • Race 9: Kimari (Channing Hill/Wesley Ward) won the $100,000 feature race. The 3-year-old filly ran last June at Royal Ascot and finished second in the Grade II Queen Mary Stakes. She is 6 4-1-1 lifetime. Mike Smith, scheduled to ride, opted not to visit the track due to recent changes due to track procedures regarding the virus.
  • Race 10: Don Vito Corleone (Martin Garcia/Rick Hiles) won... of course he did... in his maiden race.

This could be something noteworthy as it pertains to Maryland (Preakness). Hopefully, by late June, we can see events scheduled...

Source: Bloodhorse

Fasig-Tipton announced April 3 the rescheduling of its May Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, which will now be held June 29-30 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md.

The sale's under tack show will be held June 24-26.

"The latest data on the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with social distancing recommendations and stay-at-home orders, has necessitated the change of dates," Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning Jr. said. "Fortunately, we had already planned on having an auction in Maryland in late June, so moving the May auction to these June dates made sense for all participants."

Fasig-Tipton said the new June sale dates will supersede the previous dates announced for a second Midlantic 2-year-old auction that Fasig-Tipton added after The Gulfstream Sale, its March 2-year-olds in training sale in Florida, was canceled.

Paulick Report has an article on the winner of the first race at Gulfstream whom I mentioned in today's summary as someone with whom I was unfamiliar.

In addition to knowing Vinny Viola and Anthony Bonomo through Always Dreaming, he has connections to Dominick Schettino, Robert Falcone, Jr. and Nick Zito. Tyler Gaffalione rode, the horse switched owners from Carlo Vaccarezza. Matthew O'Connor, come on down !

Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: More than $6,000,000 bet today.
  • Angel Suarez won three times.
  • Antonio Gallardo won the finale, he is the meet's leading rider. He was removed from his mount the prior race due to a possible injury in the sixth.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione has won three times. With so few tracks operating, he should be named Jockey of the Week in North America.

  • Hector Berrios-Amador Sanchez teamed twice and won both races. The jockey and trainer are both from Chile, the trainer has about 30 lifetime wins in the U.S. since beginning his training his career last year.
  • Race 6: Express Pharoah (Leonel Reyes/Alexis Delgado) broke his maiden in his 6th start. He is a son to American Pharoah who never raced on a turf track but his offspring certainly have taking a liking to the surface.
  • Race 10: Up in Smoke (Luis Saez/George Weaver) is now a perfect 3 3-0-0. The 3-year-old filly beat older horses and could be looking at a stakes race next...depending on the schedules. Saez picked up the mount for John Velazquez who returned home in New York.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Favorites: By my count, won just once in 10 races. It is Oaklawn after all.
  • Race 5: That was a close finish but I thought the inside horse got his nose down in time. The track caller didn't state a winner. One studio analyst said the outside horse. Then there was a sizable delay afterwards which is understandable. But for no one to call the inside at least initially surprised me.
  • Race 6: Calvin Borel took a spill out of the gate and was removed off the track by medical personnel. That is necessary for a fallen jockey who doesn't leave on his/her own ability due to the continuity of the race. Borel didn't appear to be injured seriously and thankfully now an update that he is up-and-about in the jock's room.
  • Race 9: A 48-to-1 shot won the race and paid $100.40. Beat Marvin, my horse, sent off at 7-to-2. Ginobili, named after a basketball player, was sent off the favorite and touted mightily by many but flopped.

Independence Hall is likely off the Triple Crown trail. Whether that is related to the current situation or a technical strategy, he will be training for shorter distances.

Bob Baffert has three of the shortest prices...and with the delay may have a horse among the mutuel field.

There must be a bet somewhere: Baffert against the rest.

Now comes word that Churchill Downs may have additional betting pools in July and August.

Favorites:
  • The field (all horses not listed) is 3-to-1.
  • Tiz the Law is 5-1.
  • Charlatan is 5-1
  • Nadal is 9-1
  • Maxfield 9-1.
  • Authentic is 10-1 and is a higher price than the previous pool which listed the colt at 6-1.

This is a possible field for the Oaklawn Stakes which will be run on Saturday. It should be an enticing race not only to handicappers but to the connections looking to find a spot in the Arkansas Derby (May 2) which pays a most significant dividend for entry into the Kentucky Derby.

Among those who could run next week...
  • Basin (Steve Asmussen)
  • Excession (Steve Asmussen)
  • Farmington Road (Todd Pletcher)
  • Blackberry Wins (Joe Sharp)
  • Mischevious Alex (John Servis)
  • Shared Sense (Brad Cox)
  • Digital (Bret Calhoun)
  • Mr. Big News (Bret Calhoun)
  • Sir Rick (Robertino Diodoro)
  • Taishan (Richard Baltas)
  • Sixto (Eric Guillot)

Obviously a drop in wagering based on the current climate, but over $731,000,000 was wagered at tracks in the USA during March 2020.

Gulfstream ($14 m), Tampa Bay ($6 m) and Oaklawn ($10 m) handled approximately $30,000,000 on Saturday.

At $2.5 billion, the amount bet on US tracks was about 1% off the same quarter for 2019.

KENTUCKY: Churchill announced today that stables will not be open until April 28 and opening day of the spring meet is unknown. I think the dates will be clearer for all meets on April 21 when there is a scheduled meeting.

VIRGINIA: Colonial Downs is status quo but a possibility exists of a canceled meet rather than racing with no spectators. Virginia reintroduced racing last year and it was quite successful.

ENGLAND: Royal Ascot could be held but without spectators from the scheduled dates of June 16-20. What color will the Queen wear is part of the pageantry.

Kentucky Derby anniversary recaps...

Part 1 -- 1970 -- Dust Commander -- 50 years ago -- Post #827
Part 2 -- 2000 -- Fusaichi Pegasus -- 20 years ago -- Post #852
Part 3 -- 1990 -- Unbridled -- 30 years ago -- Post #858
Part 4 -- 1980 -- Genuine Risk -- 40 years ago -- Post #875
Part 5 -- 2010 -- Super Saver -- 10 years ago -- To come

Genuine Risk -- Genuine Risk was the second filly to win the Kentucky Derby, at 12-to-1, and first since Regret in 1915. Unlike the previous three Derbies with superstars Seattle Slew, Affirmed (and rival Alydar) and Spectacular Bid, the 1980 Derby was billed as wide open. Genuine Risk was the first filly to run in a Kentucky Derby in 21 years. Genuine Risk hit the board with every start and ended her career 15 10-3-2 including controversy in placing in the Preakness Stakes. She was sired by Exclusive Naive who also fathered a horse by the name of Affirmed who went on to win the Triple Crown in 1978. Genuine Risk lived to the ripe old age of 31.

Jacinto Vasquez -- The Hall of Fame jockey won the 1975 Kentucky Derby on board Foolish Pleasure. He rode Ruffian in one of the most infamous races in racing history when the filly broke down in a match race against Foolish Pleasure just two months after the Derby. Vasquez had the option to ride either horse and chose the filly. Five years later he won with Genuine Risk in what was one of the most significant wins for a filly in U.S. history.

LeRoy Jolley -- The Hall of Fame trainer won the 1975 Kentucky Derby with Jacinto Vasquez riding. The pair won Derbies only with each other. In 1979, he finished second to Spectacular Bid with General Assembly who was owned by Bertram Firestone.

Diana Firestone -- Longtime owner of horses along with her husband Bertram. One of her grandfathers founded Johnson & Johnson health products.
