Javier Castellano, who has been quarantined in Florida since returning from Louisiana in mid-March, was allowed to fly home to New York. He had tested positive for the virus but showed no symptoms per reports. That said, since he received permission to fly interstate, he plans to ride at Oaklawn (Arkansas) on May 1. The next day, which was to be the date of the Kentucky Derby, is when the revised Arkansas Derby will be held.

  • Steve Asmussen, the winningest trainer in North America this year with 111 victories and second most all-time with over 8,800, has lost with his last 43 starters at Oaklawn. That is a shocking figure.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $7,000,000 bet on the card. A good showing as the main option for bettors.
  • Chalk: Seven of the eight races were won by favorites.
  • Daniel Centeno won three times, all with favorites.
  • Race 2: The only non-favorite to win this day was the longest shot on the board in a field of 10 at 44-to-1. The favorite placed.
  • Race 8: More than $1.67 million was bet into the Pick 5.
Will Rogers (Oklahoma):
  • Lane Luzzi-Steve Asmussen hit the board each time but without victory. They combined as a team to go 4 0-2-2.

Bob Baffert's Kentucky Derby possibilities:
  1. Authentic could run next in the Affirmed Stakes June 14 at Santa Anita.
  2. Nadal could run next in the May 2 Arkansas Derby.
  3. Charlatan could run next in the May 2 Arkansas Derby; however, he could be pointed to a race in California -- even Los Al -- based on availability at Oaklawn.
  4. Thousand Words is entered at Oaklawn this upcoming Saturday.

Kentucky Derby anniversary recaps...
Part 1 -- 1970 -- Dust Commander -- 50 years ago -- Post #827
Part 2 -- 2000 -- Fusaichi Pegasus -- 20 years ago -- Post #852
Part 3 -- 1990 -- Unbridled -- 30 years ago -- Post #858
Part 4 -- 1980 -- Genuine Risk -- 40 years ago -- Post #875
Part 5 -- 2010 -- Super Saver -- 10 years ago -- Post #883
Part 6 -- 1920 -- Paul Jones -- 100 years ago -- To come

Super Saver -- The 2010 Kentucky Derby was run on a wet surface. The heavily bet colt went off at 8-to-1 down from a 15-to-1 morning line. He was sent off with the second lowest odds on the board only shorter than Lookin at Lucky at 6-to-1. The colt was the most recent Kentucky Derby to have lost his prior race (2nd in the Arkansas Derby) until Country House in 2019 (3rd in the Arkansas Derby). Super Saver finished his career at 13 6-4-2 and his lone time off the board was in his career finale which was the Breeders' Cup Classic in New Jersey.

Calvin Borel -- The Hall of Fame jockey won the Kentucky Derby for the third time in four years, no other rider has accomplished that feat. As described by race caller Tom Durkin immediately following the race "The unflappable Calvin Borel." He won earlier with Street Sense and Mine That Bird. About a month later, Borel joined Pat Day as the only jockeys to win 1,000 races at Churchill Downs.

Todd Pletcher
-- The race that ended the Hall of Famer's struggle to win America's most prestigious race. It took a 25th attempt but Pletcher finally broke the jinx. He won a second Kentucky Derby with Always Dreaming. Pletcher is the 8th winningest trainer of all-time and is 105 victories shy of 5,000 in his legendary career.

WinStar Farm
-- The famous silks and same owners as Triple Crown winner Justify. The individual who owns the racing and breeding farm is Kenny Troutt who founded a long distance telephone carrier that was eventually sold for multi-billions.

  • There was $3.6 million bet into the Pick 5 pool on Tuesday at Fonner Park (Nebraska). That is incredible.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Rainbow Six Carryover: $465,000+ for tomorrow's card.
  • Tyler Gaffalione was named North American Jockey of the Week. He is 40 15-3-5 (38%/57%) at the meet. He won twice today.
  • Luca Panici is winless on board 23 mounts this meet.
  • Race 1: Joseph Trejos, a 5-pound bug who I believe is from Panama, finished second with a 69-to-1 shot in a field of 12. It was his sixth ride in the States and the first time he hit the board.
  • Race 2: A DQ resulted in the original winner being removed.
  • Race 3: Jesus Lander, winning trainer. won for the first time this year and sixth time in his career.
  • Race 5: Chris Landeros had a $55.80 winner and for his father-in-law Ian Wilkes. It took Landeros 124 starts to win at the recently closed winter meet. It took him only his eighth start for this meet to secure victory #1.
  • Race 6: Joel Rosario and Luis Saez, two of the best nationally, hooked up for a good stretch battle but few can out muscle Rosario if he has the horse.
  • Race 7: Wash, rinse, repeat. Same scene as the sixth race. Joel Rosario is tough to beat in duels. Luis Saez another second.
  • Race 8: Robert Hess, who has been based in California but brought horses to Florida, improved to 6 4-0-0 at the meet. He was under 10% this year prior to his recent run.
  • Race 9: Blewitt (Tyler Gaffalione/Todd Pletcher), named after track analyst Jason Blewitt, didn't blow it and won at 6-to-1. It was the second straight win for the meet's top rider.
  • Race 10: Chris Landeros won his second race of the day and in a spellbinding duel with Joel Rosario who couldn't complete the deal as he had twice earlier this day. Tough beat for those who played Act Like Artie. The winning Rainbow Six tickets returned over $32,000.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 4: The $.50 trifecta paid over $2,300. The trio was sent off at 12-1, 24-1 and 59-to-1.
  • Race 8: Steve Asmussen's shocking skid at 45 straight losses at this track ended.
  • Race 9: Steve Asmussen is now on a 2-race win streak. Funny how that happens.

Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Race 4: The lone first-time starter won and paid a healthy price. One of my favorite wagering angles.
  • Race 6: The ticket was topped by 38-1, 71-1, 13-1 and 12-1. The $1 exacta was an almost unfathomable $1,334.90. The $.50 tri returned over $4,200. The $.10 super paid over $7,900.
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $35,000.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Rainbow 6: The carryover will exceed $573,000. The track has guaranteed the pool will reach $1.1 million.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 10: Inshannity (Martin Garcia/Bob Baffert) received a perfectly timed ride in winning her debut race and as a 4-year-old.
  • Race 8: McLean Robertson had a skid of 32 in a row halted with a victory ridden by David Cohen. Robertson was a 22% trainer last year but is only 6% in 2020; however, his numbers are much higher at his home base in Minnesota and that should be no exception this year if and when Canterbury runs.
  • Ricardo Santana, Jr. rode today but he was issued a 10-day suspension which could transfer into next year's meet depending on if he appeals and rides any stakes races the balance of this meet during the idle time which he is allowed. He had just returned from a quarantine. Santana was the meet's leading rider every year from 2013-2018.
  • Steve Asmussen hit the board just once with seven starters. He leads all North American-based trainers in wins this year.
  • Rider standings: Joe Talamo (42 wins), Martin Garcia (40) and David Cohen (40) are 1-2-3, respectively.

Saturday, April 11, 2020 (Part 1 of 2)

Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: Over $6.8 million bet on the card.
  • Record Payout: The Pick 5 was the biggest in track history at over half a million dollars! A NYRA Bets customer hit it at $524,966.50 for the $0.50 wager. Based in Lexington, KY, the person joined the NYRA Bets community March 14 and spent $409.50 on the ticket. Not a bad investment.
  • Race 1: As mentioned often, lone first-time starters pique my interest. A 33-to-1 finished 3rd and paid $11.60. Not a win but that can be a profitable wager if used properly. But it has to be used properly. :ha:
  • Race 2 and 4: Angel Suarez-Timothy Hamm are 2-for-3 on the day.
  • Race 6: The Stifler (Daniel Centeno/John Rigattieri) broke a 9-race losing streak and won for the first time in 13 months. The 7-to-1 shot, in an exciting finish, held off the place finisher. The trainer began his career as a hotwalker for the trainer to Secretariat in the early 1970s. He won his first career race the now-shuttered Rockingham Park in New Hampshire. He is a rare trainer who never appears in the winner's circle. BTW, Michelle Yu cited American Pie due to the horses's name.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Dylan Davis had three winners with their prices exceeding $75, $21 and $33.
  • Races 1-3: Some of the stunning extraordinary prices to open a card as I have seen in decades. Check the record books. The doubles could be among the biggest produced at Gulf.
  • Race 1: Freddy Soto (Luis Reyes/Antonio Sano), sent off at 73-to-1, sent the day off to a dramatic beginning and paid $148.40/$64.40/$28.20. The $1 exacta was $1,296. The $.50 tri was over $9,400. The $.10 super over $52,000. Some of the most staggering returns I have ever seen in an average race day opener.

  • Race 2: Union Lane (Miguel Vasquez/Daniel Pita) won at 34-to-1 and paid $70. For anyone who cashed the double, go to the proverbial window now and run home. The winning $1 double combo paid $1,493 for $1. That has to be one of the largest for a single dollar in quite some time.
  • Race 3: He's a Babe (Dylan Davis/Michael Tomlinson), in his second race, continued the dazzling day with a $85.20 winner. The $1 double paid $981. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $14,000. Almost unthinkable!

  • Race 4: Finally, a little sanity with a 5-to-2 on top. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $2,400.
  • Race 5: American Pharoah's offspring love the turf. One of his daughter's made her second start and first on turf and she finished on top just in time. The $.50 Pick 4 paid a remarkable $42,000. The $.50 Pick 5 set a record as it paid over $524,000.

  • Race 6: Mister Winston (Dylan Davis/Chad Brown), a Lookin At Lucky 3-year-old making his career debut, finished nicely to catch the 6-to-5 favorite and at 9-to-1.
  • Race 7: Derby Champagne (Tyler Gaffalione/Rusty Arnold) closed to win.
  • Race 8: That race didn't disappoint but will there be an objection? Per Capita (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) in his third lifetime race and off a layoff since July, edged Colonial Liam (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher), a $1.25 million purchase, but now there is an objection and inquiry. Brown vs. Pletcher in an inquiry? Bring the popcorn! ...... And as expected, Colonial Liam was put up for victory.
  • Race 9: Miami Crockett (Emisael Jaramillo/Steve Klesaris) is now 3-for-4 in 2020 after a win.
  • Race 10: Boerne (Edgard Zayas/Juan Avila) romped. Not too many Texas-breds make it to south Florida, but this one is 2-for-2 lifetime at Gulfstream and has three lifetime races.
  • Race 11: Dylan Davis won for the third time on this card.
  • Race 12: Princess Causeway (Chris Landeros/Ian Wilkes) closed like a rocket to win.
  • Race 13: Tyler Gaffalione, the leading rider at the meet, won the finale at 10-to-1. It was his second win of the day. Trainer Antonio Sano, who also won the opener, had a 2-win day. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $24,000. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $33,000.
  • Rainbow Six Carryover: $728,000+.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

  • Handle: Roughly $17,000,000 bet at this fantastic venue which established a track record. If -- big-time if -- Oaklawn ever installed a turf course and somehow extended its calendar year to include November, this would be an ideal spot to host the Breeders' Cup. Two large obstacles but this track needs to have its presence increased.
  • Rider's standings: An awesome race in which four riders have reached 40 wins led by Joe Talamo's 43.
  • Joel Rosario rode three winners. He finished the day 8 3-2-2. Seven of eight hit the board. He is 13 5-5-2 (38%/92%) at this meet.
  • Ricardo Santana, Jr. rode three winners all for Steve Asmussen. He is appealing his 10-day suspension.
  • Race 1: Tyler Baze/Ingrid Mason the winning combo.
  • Race 2: Florent Geroux/ Brad Cox the winning combo. Geroux has won at either 18% or 19% the last seven years. Consistent.
  • Race 3: Skol Factor (Joel Rosario/McLean Robertson) was brilliant in his second race. The Minnesota-based trainer, mentioned here yesterday, won on a second-straight card. It doesn't hurt to have one of the best jockeys in America riding. Keep an eye on the 3-year-old gelding who could be making noise as the year progresses. Minnesota Vikings' fan rejoice!
  • Race 4: Was that Affirmed and Alydar out there? No, but winner Shooter's Shoot (Joe Talamo/Peter Eurton) and Blackberry Wine (Martin Garcia/Joe Sharp) put on a terrific show. They were 1-2 at the quarter pole and never looked back.

  • Race 5: Casual (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) broke her maiden in her debut race. A daughter to Curlin.
  • Race 6: Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen go back-to-back.
  • Race 7: Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen go back-to-back-to-back. Asmussen entered this week with a stunning streak of 43 straight losses at Oaklawn. He has since won with 5 of his past 15 winners.
  • Race 8: Proverb (Joel Rosario/Richard Baltas) finished nicely with the best closing jockey in the land. Good finish, strong run.
  • Race 9: Tom's d'Etat (Joel Rosario/Albert Stall), a seven-year-old, finished nicely with the best closing jockey in the land. Good finish, strong run. Sound familiar? Tom's d'Etat has earned over $1.3 million, has won four of his past five, ran for the first time since November and is 10-for-17 lifetime. He is owned by Gayle Benson, the wife of the former owner of the New Orleans Saints Tom Benson who has since passed away. Improbable (Drayden Van Dyke/Bob Baffert), who finished fourth in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, led from the outside post in his first race since last November but settled for place.

  • Race 10: Drayden Van Dyke rode the winner.
  • Race 11: Mr. Big News (Gabriel Saez/Bret Calhoun) spanked the competition at 45-to-1 and paid $95.60 in winning the $200,000 Oaklawn Stakes. Farmington Road (Martin Garcia/Todd Pletcher) finished nicely for place. Taishan (Joel Rosario/Richard Baltas) was bet heavily and finished third. The $.50 tri was over $1,200. The $1 double paid $551.30. The top three finishers finished 1-2-3 and received an invitation to the Arkansas Derby in three weeks which is a major stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby. The winner got an official bid to the Preakness Stakes. Thousand Words (Joe Talamo/Bob Baffert), the $1,000,000 purchase, broke awkwardly and never recovered.

  • Race 12: Alkhaatam (Declan Cannon/Daniel Peitz) ended T-bred racing in a perfect way for this day...with a bomb! The winner paid $77.80. The $1 double paid an exorbitant $2,729 which has to be among the biggest in the track's history. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $9,000. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $26,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $296,000.

Oaklawn 11: This one will come back to haunt me. I have the top three and not a tri box.

A 48-to-1 shot and not cashing.

$.50 tri over $1200!!!!

It's a hateful game at times. Yuck.

I played Rosario (#8) on top at 8-to-1 who was bet down to 2-to-1. I liked Pletcher's (#12) horse but the outside was a hindrance. The more I looked at the bomber (#3) the more he appealed to me and G. Saez is a decent jock (has ridden for Larry Jones).

I played 8-3-12, 8-12-3 and 4-8-12. It finished 3-12-8.

I didn't like Baffert's Thousand Words (#4) but used him separately because it is Baffert in Arkansas.

I played the #9. Forget its name. Was ridden by B. Hernandez. Had come out of the same race as the #3-some FG GR3 I think.

So many bombs over the past few days at OP and GP. Some playable; others not so much.

The handle at GP must have been stupid good today. Tomorrow they're the only game in town.

Gulf hasn't been publicizing its handle lately through Equibase. I have manually added totals based on pools in each race but that can get inefficient based on the various types of bets within each race.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Happy Easter: The only track which ran this day in North America.
  • Edgard Zayas and Luis Saez won three times apiece. Tyler Gaffalione and Miguel Vasquez each won twice.
  • Peter Walder, who entered horses in the sixth and seventh races, won both. He had five winners in 2020 entering today. Brian Lynch has also trained two winners.
  • Race 1: Joe Bravo won for the first time since March 22. He entered today at just 5% in 2020. Jersey Joe struggled much of last year, too. Previously he had a rebirth in his career.
  • Race 10: Luca Panici ended a personal skid of 53 races without a win. He last rode a winner on February 16 though he was also sidelined by about five weeks with injury. Zippy, at 18-to-1, caught my eye in the post parade though not necessarily to handicap -- a 15-race losing streak will do that --- but just as a striking animal... and a Louisiana-bred. Hmmm.

  • Race 11: Not often a Todd Pletcher winner at Gulfstream pays $27.40 but it did here.
  • Race 12: The 5, 9 and 12 were each singled in the finale. If any of those horses won, a unique ticket would have taken the Rainbow Six jackpot and $1.3 million. This is perhaps the second toughest beat for a 'pot in excess of seven figures that I recall (we all recall the worst defeat or conveniently forgot).

  • Rainbow Six: The jackpot for Thursday will be a guarantee of $1.5 million. It will start at $906,000+.
  • Paco Lopez was off his mounts due to a thumb injury suffered yesterday.

Easter Sunday. Forgot about that when I made my estimate.

Don't beat yourself up. It is tough to estimate these things. These are unprecedented times.

Not too long ago I predicted about $25 million for Florida Derby day. Gulf ended the day with an all-time track record $54 million bet. I thought I was being generous with no track attendance and OTBs closed for the most part. But online betting took the reins, excuse the pun.

Close to $750,000 bet just into the Pick 6 today. I didn't do the strict math but the handle could have been around $13 million based on a mental tabulation.
