Belmont (New York):
  • Bombs: This is Belmont and not Oaklawn, right? A great day for bomb players which is not exactly the norm in New York.
  • Races 7 through 9: Each won by the favorite. Things calmed as the day concluded but prior to that...
  • Races 1 through 5: Winners were sent off at 10-1, 6-1, 18-1, 11-1, 5-1 which led to the $.50 Pick 5 of more than $326,373..... for 50 cents! That is a stunning figure.
  • Race 5: The final leg was won by the Philadelphia connections of Angel Castillo and Richie Vega. Collegeville Girl, a 3-year-old filly bred in New York, came out of the Grade I Cotillion at Parx (PA) and finished last at 158-to-1.

  • Race 4: The $1 Pick paid over $4,700.
  • Race 3: The $1 Pick 3 paid over $2,500.
  • Handle: About $8 million.
  • Jose Ortiz won three times. That makes five wins for him the past two days.
  • John Velazquez has won just once with his past 19 mounts.
Monmouth Park at Meadowlands (New Jersey):
  • Calendar: Today was the seventh day of T-bred racing at the meet billed as Monmouth at Meadowlands. Tomorrow is the final day for T-bred racing and then onto harness. Sunday is the meet finale for Monmouth at Monmouth Park.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Canceled: A second day of races canceled due to a water main spill. Racing will not be conducted through at least Sunday.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Final weekend: The penultimate day of racing at the Fall meet. The electric atmosphere is contagious. As is apt to say "This is horse country."
  • Tyler Gaffalione won two more times. He is now second at the meet with 14 victories, three behind Julien Leparoux. "The kid" has been doing OK in his Kentucky races this meet and prior. He is on the verge of stardom if he isn't there yet.
  • Michael Maker (8 wins) and Chad Brown (7) will be duking it out for the trainer's title.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Opening day: Today was the meet's opening day which continues through the end of December for 2019.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Paco Lopez won one of his three rides. He is winning at a 27% this year. By my count, he has won in 10 straight cards. You have to go back to an 0-for-3 day at Parx (PA) on October 13 for his last winless day. Since that day, he is 39 16-10-5 (41%/79%). Fabulous numbers.
Remington Park (Oklahoma):
  • Races 1 and 2: The $2 double paid $1,002.60 with 18-to-1 and 20-to-1 shots winning
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $15,000.
  • Race 7: A 38-to-1 shot won.
  • Race 9: Canceled due to a kitchen fire at the track.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 5: Mr. Vitamin (JC Diaz, Jr./Genaro Vallejo) went from last to first at 41-to-1 to win.
  • Breeders' Cup: Officially one week away.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 6: The $.20 Pick 3 paid $633 or more than $3,000 for $1. The sequence began with a 41-to-1 shot winning.

BELMONT:
Maximum Security (Luis Saez/Jason Servis) runs at Belmont today. The colt has raced twice since being DQ'd in the Kentucky Derby and both races were at Monmouth: a second place finish to King for a Day (Joe Bravo/Todd Pletcher) and a victory in the Haskell in July. He was scratched from the Pennsylvania Derby. He has not run in three months.

Maximum Security makes first start in three months in Bold Ruler Handicap

ELMONT, N.Y. – A week before the Breeders’ Cup is run at Santa Anita, a horse who once figured prominently for the $6 million Classic will instead try to jump-start his season in the Grade 3, $200,000 Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont Park.

Maximum Security, the multiple Grade 1-winning 3-year-old who was the first horse disqualified from the Kentucky Derby for an on-track incident, will be making his first start in three months in the Bold Ruler at seven furlongs.

Trainer Jason Servis and owners Gary and Mary West are hoping to use the Bold Ruler as a stepping-stone for a return to Grade 1 company later this year. The $600,000 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs – site of the Kentucky Derby DQ – and the $750,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 7 are the races being discussed.

“In order to make the next one – whether it’s the Clark or the Cigar Mile – I need to get one in him,” Servis said.

  • Mark Glatt was a perfect 4 4-0-0 including three wins at Santa Anita.
  • Bill Mott entered six horses at two tracks and won four times.
  • Joel Rosario rode four winners at Keeneland.
Belmont (New York):
  • Closing day: Today was the second-to-last day of the meet. Onto Aqueduct starting Friday.
  • Handle: Over $13,000,000 wagered.
  • Bill Mott won with his first three starters and finished 5 3-0-0.
  • Races 1 and 2: Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott combined to win. The chalky $1 double at 4-to-5 and 2-to-1 paid a decent $10.10.
  • Race 4: The Ortiz brothers hooked up in a good battle. Irad won with the bigger odds. He snapped a personal losing skid of 15 in a row.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $10,000. The $2 Pick 5 returned more than $28,000.
  • Race 8: Maximum Security (Luis Saez/Jason Servis) was awesome in winning the $200,000 Grade 3 Bold Ruler which included older horses. A good test off a long layoff and he played the part with passing grades. M.S. is now 8 6-1-0 lifetime or as some would say 8 7-1-0 considering the controversial DQ in the Kentucky Derby.

  • Race 10: John Velazquez won the finale. He entered the race with just one win on his last 25 mounts.
Monmouth Park at Meadowlands
  • Race 6: The $2 exacta was a remarkable $1,110.40. The $2 tri was a stunning $24,000+. The winner paid $45 but the 56-to-1 shot runner up paid $54/$23. The $.10 superfecta paid over $3,200.
  • Closing day: The 8-day October T-bred meet at Meadowlands concluded. Tomorrow is the finale at Monmouth. New Jersey T-bred racing will be dark until 2020.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Canceled due to a water main break earlier in the week. This is the third straight canceled day.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Race 8: Fanny Olsson won with her second starter of the day and is now 4-for-16 (25%). She came to the U.S. earlier this year from Sweden.
  • Race 7: Paco Lopez had a rough day until winning his fifth start which increased his consecutive card-winning streak at 11. You have to go back to an 0-for-3 day at Parx (PA) on October 13 for his last winless day. Since that day, he is 44 17-10-5 (39%/73%).
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Joel Rosario: So you wanna mess with Joel Rosario when he is on a roll? He was 5 4-0-0 today and won consecutive races twice. He got into a brief stretch battle with Robby Albarado that ended in a comfortable win.
  • Race 9: Tom d'Etat (Joel Rosario/Albert Stall) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Hagyard Fayette Stakes. The ownership is the Benson family who among other ventures the New Orleans Saints.

  • Closing day: Today was the closing day at the popular meet. All-sources wagering totaled $160,207,916 which is an all-time record set previously during the 2013 Spring Meet. Average daily on-track handle was $1,018,873 versus $965,874 in the fall of 2018.
  • Julien Leparoux won the rider's title at the meet with 19 victories. Tyler Gaffalione was second.
  • Michael Maker won the trainer's title at the meet with 8 victories. Chad Brown was second.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Mark Glatt won with all three of his starters including the first two races. In between bringing home both ends of the early daily double, he won with a starter at Keeneland for three wins in about 35 elapsed minutes. That is a monumental achievement.
  • Race 7: Keeper Ofthe Stars (Abel Cedillo/Jonathan Wong) won the Grade 3 $100,000 race for 3-year-old fillies.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 8: Cool Shadows (Jerome Lermyte/Stuart Simon) won the $225,000 feature for 2-year-old fillies. The 1-to-2 favorite ran off the board which led to high show prices of $20.60, $14.60 and $11.30.

TVG will air Monday night's Breeders' Cup draw with a 2-hour special.

TVG to Broadcast Breeders' Cup Post Position Draw - BloodHorse

TVG, America's horse racing network, will offer fans exclusive access to a live broadcast from the trackside marquee at Santa Anita of the Rood & Riddle Breeders' Cup post position draw on Monday, October 28th in a two-hour special program that will air on TVG from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. ET.​

Belmont (New York):
  • Closing day of the meet. Canceled after the first race due to torrential rains and high winds.
  • Leading jockey at the meet: Manny Franco with 44 wins.
  • Leading trainer at the meet: Chad Brown with 28 wins.
  • Joel Rosario won the opener which extended his personal winning streak to five straight.
  • Aqueduct: Opening day is Friday and the Pick 6 carries there since the card was canceled today.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Closing day: This was the last day of T-bred racing in New Jersey until some point (likely May) in 2020.
  • Weather: Unlike New York, the weather was cooperative.
  • Leading jockey at the meet: Paco Lopez (109 wins) overcame a suspension at the start of the meet to overtake Nik Juarez (107 wins) and claim the rider's title. The two were tied with 107 wins apiece at one point during the day. Lopez didn't ride his first race at the track until June 15 which was six weeks and 13 racing cards after the meet began.
  • Leading trainer at the meet: Jorge Navarro with 68 wins, a landslide.
  • Race 8: D'yer Mak'er won to make Led Zeppelin fans happy. The fourth win in 33 career starts, the win snapped an 11-race skid dating back slightly more than 12 months.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Canceled: For a fourth straight day due to a water main break.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Opening day: A stellar 11-race card with nothing but 2-year-olds and each purse $90,000 or more.
  • Tyler Gaffalione and Ricardo Santana, Jr. each rode two winners.
  • Steve Asmussen, Thomas Amoss and Ian Wilkes each trained two winners.
  • Race 9: Finite (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) posted her second straight win with a six-length romp on the Rags to Riches Overnight Stakes. She has potential for a future starring role.
  • Race 10: South Bend (Julien Leparoux/Stanley Hough) won the $120,000 Street Sense for 2-year-olds. Next race could be a Kentucky Derby prep race.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 6: Mark Glatt's only starter lost and his 6-race win streak ended.
  • Breeders' Cup: Five days away to the first of two dates.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Eurico Da Silva won three times. The 44-year-old is retiring when the Woodbine meet ends in mid-December. He leads the meet by 13 wins over his closest competitor.
  • Race 8: Chapula (Patrick Husbands/Arnaud Delacour) won the Grade 3 $125,000 for 2-year-olds.

JACK Entertainment to Sell and Lease Back Properties - BloodHorse

JACK Entertainment today announced that its affiliates have entered into an agreement with VICI Properties, a real estate investment trust, to sell the membership interests of a subsidiary that owns the land and real estate assets of JACK Cleveland Casino and JACK Thistledown Racino for approximately $843 million, pending regulatory approval.

VICI will simultaneously enter into a favorable triple-net leased fee agreement with JACK Entertainment, which will continue to invest in and operate JACK Cleveland Casino and JACK Thistledown Racino under the same brand and identity the community has known since 2016.​

BREEDERS CUP NOTES:

Early scratches: Maxfield is out of the Juvy race. I mentioned yesterday Godolphin and their ultimate wish to have a Ky Derby contender. Landeskog will scratch from the Sprint. He is owned by Erik Johnson of the Avalanche. So far, the only two scratches.

Jockeys: By my count, more than 40 jockeys have mounts in the 14 Breeders' Cup races.

Flavien Prat: Flavien Prat rides each race in all 14. One of the graphics above failed to mention his ride in the TVG Mile.

Mike Smith is one Grade I victory away from tying Jerry Bailey's all-time record of 216.

Abel Cedillo: A good resume enhancer for Abel Cedillo to have five mounts. He was riding at Golden Gate and has won over 1,000 races but moved to southern Cal earlier this year. Not bad to be sandwiched on this list between Mike Smith and Frankie Dettori.

  • The Day Before the Breeders Cup.
Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Canceled due to inclement weather following the fourth race.
Churchill Donws (Kentucky):
  • Corey Lanerie had a natural hat trick starting with the second race then later won consecutive starts en route to a remarkable 9 5-1-1 afternoon. He has had five wins on a card in the past.
  • Race 5: 39-to-1 and 56-to-1 followed the winner which led to strong prices of $27.00/$18.60 for the place horse and $24.80 for show.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Weather: It snowed!

  • Race 3: Gingham (Joel Rosario/Bob Baffert) finally broke her maiden after three second place finishes to start her career. Rosario had won six of his past seven starts covering three tracks.
  • Race 4: Absolute Weapon (Abel Cedillo/Andrew Lerner) gave Erik Johnson of the Colorado Avalanche the win as the owner.

  • BREEDERS CUP FRIDAY.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Opening day. The Pick 6 carryover from Sunday's canceled card at Belmont grew to over $2.2 million.
  • Handle: Over $10,000,000.
  • Scratches: About 30 horses scratched as racing was off the turf.
  • Race 10: Fight On Lucy (Benjamin Hernandez/Patrick Kelly) rocked the house at 31-to-1. The $2 exacta paid $901.00. As I generally say, strange things happen in New York finales. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $40,000. The $.20 Pick 6 paid a mammoth $130,000+.
  • Race 6: Nine entered were ultimately scratched.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Ashley! Whenever Ashley Castrenze wins, sun peeks through cloudy days. Whenever Ashley Castrenze wins twice, sun shines its warming influence. Whenever Ashley Castrenze goes 2-for-2, well yeah baby.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Alberto Burgos, a 10-pound bug, entered the day 0-for-158 lifetime but ended the card 2-for-160. Yes, he went 2-for-2 including a win on Shessuchaknockout for Elizabeth Dobles.

He beat some higher touted horses and won by a neck at 45-to-1 which was the largest set of odds for any winner in the history of this race. The $2 exacta was $960.20. The $.50 tri paid over $1,900. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $48,000.
  • Race 8: Sharing (Manny Franco/Graham Motion) won the Grade I $1,000,000 Juvenile Fillies Turf. The 2-year-old filly improved to 4 3-0-1. Sent off at 13-to-1, she is a Maryland-bred and came out of a win at her home track. The $.50 Super High Five paid a staggering $317,000+.
  • Race 7: British Idiom (Javier Castellano/Brad Cox) won the Grade I $2,000,000 Juvenile Fillies. The 2-year-old filly improved to 3 3-0-0. She won at Saratoga, Keeneland and Santa Anita. Not too bad.
  • Race 6: Structor (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $1,000,000 Juvenile Turf. The 2-year-old colt improved to 3 3-0-0 in his first race outside of New York state. Bombs completed the trifecta at 50-to-1 and 60-to-1 shots. Brown excels on turf...again.

  • Race 5: Four Wheel Drive (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Wesley Ward) won the Grade 2 $1,000,000 Juvenile Turf Sprint. The 2-year-old colt,, a son to American Pharoah, who broke his maiden at Colonial Downs in Virginia on August 31, improved to 3 3-0-0. Ward wields his magic again with 2-year-olds.

  • Race 2: Won by the combination of Joel Rosario-Bob Baffert which wins at a 43% clip at the track. Wow!
  • Race 1: Itsinthepost (Drayden Van Dyke/Jeff Mullins) won the 1 3/4 mile marathon race. Running for the 41st time, it was the 7-year-old French-bred's first victory on a dirt track in a third attempt.

All-sources handle for the 10-race program of the first day of the 36th Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., was $56,517,228, a record for Breeders' Cup Friday and a 5.4% increase over last year's 10-race Breeders' Cup Future Stars Friday card at Churchill Downs.

The Future Stars Friday card featured five Breeders' Cup races for 2-year-old horses, the second consecutive year of grouping all of the juvenile races on the same day since the event expanded to its current two-day format in 2007.

Friday's attendance was 41,243 and Friday's on-track handle for the 10-race card was $6,340,351.

Longshot Friday winners lead to $489,379 Breeders' Cup pick six carryover

ARCADIA, Calif. – Three longshot winners in Friday’s pick six sequence, capped by Storm the Court’s 45-1 upset in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, produced a $489,379 carryover into Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup card at Santa Anita.

No one picked six in a sequence spanning races that included victories by Tap Black at $30 in race 4, Four Wheel Drive at $5, Structor at $12.60, British Idiom at $7.40, Sharing at $29.60, and Storm the Court at $93.80. Five winners paid $2,878.70 on a $1 ticket, the bet’s base amount.​

More on the Juvenile (race 9 on Friday) which is a stepping stone for the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

I love it when the horse the experts really bet on, but they don't tell you so you don't bet on them, wins. That's exactly what happened here with Iridessa. They all tried to say that was the horse to watch even though no one would pick her.
 
And a rather measured post-race interview considering.

Sure seems like the horse that gets the first jump and staying further up on the pace on this track is the one getting home
