Belmont (New York):

• Manny Franco is the leading rider with 25 wins. He is having a similar year to 2018 which was his best as a pro.
• Heman Harkie won for the first time since July 4 and for the 6th time this year. His skid was snapped at 59. Winning trainer Steven Jerkens, a son to Hall of Famer Allen Jerkens, doesn't send out too many horses but won for the first time since November which ended a skid of 15 defeats.
• Race 2: Mosienko was the winner. An old-time hockey reference?

Delaware Park (Delaware):

• Chuckie Lopez, who will be 60 years of age next year, won two of three starts. He has won four of his past seven starts, He has bounced around different tracks in Philly, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware in recent days.
• Leading riders: Carol Cedeno (62 wins) has two more victories than Alex Cintron.

Gulfstream Park West (Florida):

• Leonel Reyes leads the early days of the meet with four victories.

Santa Anita (California):

• Race 7: In the finale, two gigantic tickets were cashed when the $.50 Pick 5 paid out over $119,000 and the $.20 Pick 6 returned $144,000+. Per Steve Anderson of the DRF: "The winning ticket was purchased for $288 through the Xpressbet account wagering service, according to a track official."

First part of your question...I'm not sure. I suppose if they found a way to drastically increase purses to make it work financially. Otherwise, without gaming, a new structure doesn't make sense to me for three plus months of racing. Or, as one rumor goes (unlikely in my opinion), they end up taking the winter races from Fair Grounds it would definitely work. Without gaming I'm just not seeing the horse racing being profitable. Not a great answer, sorry, but I see what you're saying.

Second part, good news if they can stretch out the season in Florida.

The whole HHR machine thing cracks me up. They found a loophole to allow "slots" if they used the pari-mutuel payout based on a predetermined data base of results instead of a traditional slot machine using a random number generator.

When they first rolled out the HHR machines, you actually picked "horses" off of the charts. It was slow and basically just a bunch of bargraphs like you see on Equibase. Revenue was lower than predicted. Shocking no one, the gaming manufacturers pushed out new machines that look like real slots that you just hit the spin button as fast as you can. Since they adopted a traditional slot look revenue has doubled.

Purses are up, live handle is up (except Turfway), everyone is making money. Look at Kentucky Downs. Those huge purses on that super short schedule is due in part to the $900+ million in revenue they bring in from the HHR machines. Without the machines, that place doesn't exist.

The HHR is really working out it would seem. On something like $2B in HHR revenue, the tracks have made $150M to spend on purses, facilities, and profit, etc.

Personally, if it helps the horse racing industry, so be it. The whole pari-mutuel loophole is silly though. Just legalize real slots and be done with it. States that allow racinos with real games have more to offer than the limited machines HHR manufacturers offer.

Belmont (New York):

• Races 3 and 4: Silvestre Gonzalez-Mertkan Kantarmaci teamed to win consecutive races. The jockey is a regular rider in Philadelphia and doesn't make many starts in New York. Today he was a perfect 2-for-2.
• Races 5 and 6: Jose Lezcano repeated wins. He is the leading rider at the meet.
• Race 8: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $15,000. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $21,000.

Gulfstream Park West (Florida):

• Speed kills: The track has been favoring speed since the meet began or at least it seems that way.
• Race 3: Seymour Bennett, the winning trainer. It was his first win since July 2009. Per Equibase, he had sent out only about 20 horses since then.

Keeneland (Kentucky):

• Opening day: Today was the opening day with two Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races as the highlights. The meet ends October 26, one day before Churchill Downs reopens.
• Jose Ortiz and Javier Castellano, two of the most successful jockeys in recent years and based on the East coast, won three times apiece.
• Michael Maker won with two of his three starters -- both ridden by Jose Ortiz -- with a place finish his only loss.
• Brad Cox won twice, the last two races on the card.
• Race 8: Engage (Jose Ortiz/Steve Asmussen) won the Grade II $250,000 Ogden Phoenix Stakes at 9-to-1 and will be headed to the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

• Race 9: British Idiom (Javier Castellano/Brad Cox) romped by more than 6 lengths in winning the $400,000 Grade I Alcibiades and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She is 2-for-2 lifetime with wins at Saratoga and Keeneland.

• An important day especially for connections involved in Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" races.
• Richard Baltas trained winners at two tracks in two graded stakes races.

Belmont (New York):

• Handle: Over $14,000,000 was wagered on an excellent card.
• Race 10: Tiz the Law (Manny Franco/Barclay Tagg) looked awesome in winning for the second time in two starts. The 2-year-old colt, a New York bred with the same owners as 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide, won the Grade I $500,000 Champagne Stakes and with it receive an invitation to the Breeders' Cup TVG Juvenile. The winner was one of two horses I had in this race on my Watch List as both impressed me in their debut runs. UPDATE: The owner may pass on the Breeders' Cup.

• Race 9: Arklow (Junior Alvarado/Brad Cox) dueled with Channel Maker (John Velazquez/Bill Mott) and eventually won the $500,000 Grade I Joe Hirsch. This was undoubtedly one of the best battles of the day, nearly three across the wire, and it was enjoyable to see Alvarado best his sometime nemesis.

• Race 8: Neptune's Storm (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Richard Baltas) improved to 8 4-2-2 (50%/100%) in 2019 in winning the $400,000 Grade 2 Hill Prince. Good training job as the change of scenery from California, where all 11 races were run, and the removal of blinkers were both factors.
• Race 6: Alms (Jose Lezcano/Michael Stidham) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Matron. She is now 2 2-0-0
• Manny Franco (28 wins) and Jose Lezcano (25 wins), the two winningest riders at the meet, each won three times. Lezcano had the natural hat trick beginning with race 5. Franco brought home both ends of the late double. Luis Saez won twice. The three riders combined to win 8 of the 11 races.
• Irad Ortiz, Jr. returned from a 5-day suspension but was shutout. I thought he would have a strong day but he ended the day 9 0-4-1.
• John Velazquez won just once on seven mounts.
• Chad Brown was 7 0-1-1, a rare strike out on a Saturday in New York for the top trainer.

Meadowlands (New Jersey):

• Race 4: The winner paid $163 and the $1 super paid over $86.000
• Race 5: The $2 double was $1,013.70.
• Meet: This was the second of eight racing dates held all year, each this month, and it will be billed as Monmouth Park at Meadowlands.

Parx (Pennsylvania):

• Race 8: Adventist (John Bisono/Uriah St. Lewis) stunned the masses at 50-to-1 and paid $103.00 in winning the Grade 3 $200,000 Greenwood Cup. Perhaps more exhilarating was the strong finish in sweeping by his rivals. Among the competitors was War Story, who has earned over $2.9 million and is trained by Jorge Navarro, and Marconi, trained by Todd Pletcher. The heavily bet invaders were defeated.

Delaware Park (Delaware):

• Finale: Today was closing day. The track is dark to live racing until probably May 2020.
• Leading jockey: Carol Cedeno. She won the meet last year, too.
• Leading trainer: Jamie Ness was the winningest trainer. Anthony Pecoraro, second in wins, was a noteworthy 40%.
• Jeremy Rose won both of his starts including a thriller in a hookup in race 3. He finished 78 28-15-4 (36%/60%) at the meet and those numbers are representative of his stellar 2019 season at all tracks. Last year, he was 12%. This year he is 32%. I can't be the only one who has noticed. Where does he go from here?

Laurel (Maryland):

• Sheldon Russell was off his mounts starting with a change at the gate in race 4.

Gulfstream Park West (Florida):

• Race 5: A long photo review for win resulted in a dead heat.
• Leonel Reyes, who has abilities to bring home prices, is the leading rider at the former Calder with 8 wins on 20 mounts. Today he had four wins, on just seven mounts, including a natural hat trick beginning with race 5.

Santa Anita (California):

• Drayden Van Dyke had a memorable day with three stakes wins including two graded stakes.
• Race 5: Lady Ninja (Drayden Van Dyke/Richard Baltas) won the Grade 3 $100,000 L.A. Woman.
• Race 8: True Valour (Drayden Van Dyke/Simon Callaghan) won the Grade 2 $200,000 City of Hope Stakes in a nailbiter. Restrainedvengence (Martin Garcia/Val Brinkerhoff) finished second as the longest shot on the board at 43-to-1. The $2 exacta paid over $1,200. The $.50 tri was over $1,800.

• Race 9: Omaha Beach (Mike Smith/Richard Mandella) won the $300,000 Grade I Santa Anita Sprint Championship in a thriller in what was his return performance. With the win come an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Dirt. He was last out in April and was the morning line favorite in the 2019 Kentucky Derby before being scratched with injury. Shancelot (Emisael Jaramillo/Jorge Navarro) was the tough loser as the beaten favorite who had caught the eyes of many at the Amsterdam in August at Saratoga.

Woodbine (Ontario):

• Race 8: Curlin's Voyage (Eurico da Silva/Josie Carroll) won the $125,000 Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes via DQ after Skygaze (Jerome Lermyte/Mark Casse) was removed from victory.

Keeneland (Kentucky):

• Challenge Series: Four Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" races highlighted a brilliant card.
• Race 10: Bowie's Hero (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won the days biggest race, the Grade I $1,000,000 Shadwell Turf Mile and with it an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Turf Mile.

• Race 9: Maxfield (Jose Ortiz/Brendan Walsh) won the $500,000 Grade I Futurity and with it an invitation to the Breeders' Cup TVG Juvenile.

​

• Race 8: Uni (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) not only won the Grade I $400,000 First Lady Stakes but smashed the mile course record in 1:32.87 and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

​

• Race 7: Spiced Perfection (Javier Castellano/Peter Miller), a California-bred who is 2-for-2 at Keeneland and who began this race awkwardly, won the Grade 2 $250,000 Thoroughbred Club of America and with it an invitation to the Breeders' Cup "Filly & Mare Sprint."

• Race 6: Stubbins (Joel Rosario/Doug O'Neill) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Woodford at 7-to-1.
• Steve Asmussen, the second winningest trainer in North America this year, sent out seven horses but non won.
• Javier Castellano had his second consecutive 3-win day at the track. Jose Ortiz and Joel Rosario each won twice.
• Peter Miller sent out three starters and won twice, the only trainer with a 2-win day.
• Simulcast graphics are tough to read. The numbers and odds are too condensed.

A mandatory payout for the Empire 6 wager, featuring a jackpot of $725,823 is set for Sunday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

The Empire 6, which kicks off in Race 5 at approximately 2:59 p.m. Eastern, will feature three graded stakes that are each part of the Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Challenge Series, highlighted by the 42nd running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Flower Bowl [Filly and Mare Turf]; the 72nd running of the Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette [Juvenile Fillies] and the Grade 3, $150,000 Futurity [Juvenile Turf Sprint]. The Breeders' Cup will run November 1-2 at Santa Anita Park.

The Empire 6 requires the bettor to select the first-place finisher of the final six races of the card. On non-mandatory payout days, if one unique ticket exists, then 100 percent of the net pool, plus the jackpot carryover if applicable, will be paid to the winner. If there is no unique wager selecting the first-place finisher in all six races, then 75 percent of the day's net pool will be distributed to those who selected the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races. The remainder will be added into the jackpot and carried to the next day's Empire 6.​

With this possibly out of the way or at least the negative elements subsided and finally some positive PR for The Stronach Group, perhaps this means they can devote their energies to landing the Breeders' Cup for Laurel. It is still an uphill struggle to convince the proper powers but they recently hired a key member of the Breeders' Cup staff to their TSG's hierarchy. The finances of this proposal are massive and if -- big word -- if all the parties can figure this out in a suitable fashion and make it work then Maryland racing will be a major player even more so than now.

To fund the proposed $353-million transformations, the deal calls for the Maryland Stadium Authority to issue 30-year bonds in the amount of $348 million. The Maryland Stadium Authority, which similarly funded Camden Yards for Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles and M&T Bank Stadium for the NFL's Ravens, had conducted studies on how to rebuild Pimlico.

For the funding to work, the General Assembly would have to extend the Racetrack Facilities Renewal Account, which currently funds purses and matching funds for capital improvements but are phased out beginning in 2026 and expire in 2032. Casino companies may oppose the extension, the Sun reports.

If the casino funding is extended, the bonds would be paid back $17 million annually, with The Stronach Group assuming the bulk of the payments, horsemen contributing $5 million, and the City of Baltimore paying $3.5 million.

A total of $199 million would be allocated for demolition of the current Pimlico structures and construction of a new grandstand and ship-in barns, with $174 million earmarked for Laurel's various projects.

All of the Pimlico property would be donated to the City of Baltimore, with The Stronach Group's Maryland Jockey Club signing a 30-year lease to operate a spring meeting to include the Preakness. A significant portion of the property would be available for development. The new grandstand would be available for year-round use for community events. Similarly, under the plan, ship-in barns could be used for events like farmer's market year-round. The proposal also calls for community use of athletic fields to be built in the track's infield, which formerly has been used for a Preakness Day InfieldFest concert, whose would have to be “reimagined,” according to Rifkin.
The Sun reports a three- to four-year timeline for completion but said the Preakness would go on as scheduled during construction.

Negotiations among the various parties have taken place over four months and followed a lawsuit – since dropped – by the City of Baltimore against The Stronach Group, which previously said it would not commit to holding the Preakness at Pimlico beyond 2020.​

Belmont (New York):

• Race 10: Over $3,000,000 was in the Pick 6 pool which paid over $6,400 to all winners in a mandatory payout.
• Race 9: Sistercharlie (John Velazquez/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $500,000 Flower Bowl. She improved to 14 10-3-0 lifetime. She has won six consecutive starts all in Grade I races and has also won the last seven in this category (in between was a loss in a Grade 2). She received an invite to the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

• Race 8: Wicked Whisper (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) won the Grade I $400,000 Frizette Stakes and with it received an invite to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

• Race 7: Four Wheel Drive (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Wesley Ward) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Futurity Stakes. The 2-year-old colt won for the second time in two starts, is sired by American Pharoah, and received an invite to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

• Close calls: Five straight races were tight.
• Race 4: Dead heat for win.
• Race 5: Dead heat for win. I do not recall the last time I saw consecutive dead heat finishes on the same card. The payouts were interesting including four daily doubles.
• Race 6: Won by a nose.
• Race 7: Won by a little more than a length.
• Race 8: Won by a head, by an 18-to-1 shot.
• Race 9: Won by a nose by a 1-to-9 shot.
• Jockey leaders: Nik Juarez's once insurmountable lead is now down to one more victory over Paco Lopez, 104-103. Lopez could be more likely to ride elsewhere. The meet closes this month.

Keeneland (Kentucky):

• Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 paid out over $39,000.
• Race 9: Blue Prize (Joe Bravo/Ignacio Correas IV) won the $500,000 Grade I Spinster for the second straight year and with it received an invite to the Breeders' Cup Longines Distaff. The 6-year-old Argentinian bred was the only horse to have won on the track and has now earned over $1.5 million. Among the defeated in the short field was Elate (Jose Ortiz/Bill Mott) who has earned over $2.3 million.

• Race 8: Peace Achieved (Miguel Mena/Mark Casse) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Dixiana Bourbon Stakes by a neck at 8-to-1 and received an invite to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.. Solid performance by a lesser known rider in a race that featured Mike Smith, Jose Ortiz, Javier Castellano, Luis Saez, Julien Leparoux, Florent Geroux and many others.

Well, this is all public now so I'll put it out here in the open. As I was trying to get at, the "plan" to build a new track and get the winter meet was nothing but a ruse to keep Hard Rock (who was buying Turfway from Jack Entertainment) out of Northern Ky. It's clearly all about getting a foothold in the Cincinnati metro area for if and when casinos are approved in Kentucky.

Local politcians are already gushing over CDI getting Turfway instead of Jack/Hard Rock since those are outsiders and CDI is "one of us". Also, clearly they haven't read the press release because whatever they spend on a new facility is inclusive of the purchase price so chop that new construction by roughly a third. State officials of course are ecstatic. Sure, they were pushing for this.

CDI is killing Calder, whatever is going on with Arlington, and there are rumors about Fair Grounds, so maybe CDI follows through on building a new facility after the grandstands are torn down in 2020 at Turfway. But, I wouldn't trust them.

Wow! I had no idea about this. I used to be a Turfway regular for many years but I bet online for the most part now and probably only average one or two nights per year on track at Turfway . They treated me very well and watching the facility go into disrepair and attendance plummet was pretty depressing. Attendance dropped by roughly half almost immediately after the Indiana casinos opened in the mid 90s and continued to dwindle in the time since. I've expected Turfway to fade into the sunset for years-but its location and possible use as a casino has kept it on life support for the past 15 years under a number of ownerships including Keeneland and Harrah's at one point.

I always felt that Jack Casino's purchase of Turfway was no more than a hedge against casino legalization in Kentucky. The market is so saturated with casinos. Jack Casino is 10 miles from Turfway and Belterra is roughly 15-20 miles from Turfway. Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Indiana is 20 miles or so from Turfway. Belterra has already been sold once (by Pinnacle Entertainment to Boyd) and has probably not even come close to breaking even in any month since its opening in 2014. I've always had my doubts about the viability of the Turfway property as a casino, but I guess I'll find out in the near future. With the Churchill Downs name and their influence in the state of Kentucky, I would view them as the ideal redevelopment company for Turfway. Perhaps I'm mistaken about this.

As I said earlier, Turfway has been on life support for years and in the absence of a miracle was going to die. I'll view the Churchill Downs acquisition as that miracle until proven otherwise.

Keeneland handled over $39 million in the first three dates of the meet. That is an increase of 6% from 2018. Keeneland is among the top racing venues in America and has perhaps the most youthful crowd while maintaining a conventional element. Average crowd size was about 15,000.

Number 12 sticks out to me for if no other reason I have never heard of the trainer. Turns out she has one lifetime win. The horse, 2-for-2 with both wins at Louisiana tracks, was trained by Carl Deville (same last name) and had a local jockey riding. All of a sudden Victor Espinoza is on board. The only non-KY bred in the race, too. I will dig into this.

Timmy Hills trains the 13. I don't know if he has ever had a Grade 2 winner (he trains mostly in the northeast/NY/NJ) among his 2000+ winners.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission unanimously approved the sale of Turfway Park to CDI today.

Hard Rock announced the purchase of Turfway six months ago and never got a hearing before the KHRC. CDI got approval in only five days.

Flannery said CDI will work with surfaces expert Dr. Mick Peterson to ensure the condition of the existing Polytrack and to consider the installment of an inner dirt track. In response to questions from commissioners, Flannery said the organization was undecided whether it would card races on dirt, or whether the Jeff Ruby Steaks could be moved back to dirt. If an inner dirt track is installed, it is estimated to be about seven furlongs, but first officials must figure out how to best work around the lake currently in the track's infield.​

Also Tuesday in a separate commission meeting, the KHRC dates committee issued a recommendation to the full commission to award Kentucky Downs seven racing days in 2020, up from its customary five-day season from past years.
Ellis Park, which runs in Kentucky during the summer, opposed Kentucky Downs' request to have seven days in September, believing it could negatively impact purses and the horse population from which it fills its race cards in its final weeks. Kentucky Downs had sought the extra days partially as a means to offset fixed costs associated with its short meet.​

Kentucky Downs Set For Three-Phase Expansion, Will Double Gaming Operation - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

The first of three phases will add 18,000 square feet with an estimated investment of approximately $25 million. The new building will feature more gaming as well as more food, beverage and entertainment options.

Construction is expected to begin in the next few weeks, with the first phase scheduled for completion before the 2020 live race meet begins in early September. The existing building will undergo its own dramatic renovation during the expansion, including transforming part of the current gaming floor into restaurants and other food and beverage outlets.

The combined expansion and renovation will nearly double the gaming operation, housing 1,200 Historical Horse Racing (HHR) gaming terminals. Kentucky Downs currently has 753 HHR terminals.​
