This trade also raises the question about the Rangers future in goal because Lundqvist isn't getting any younger. Do the Rangers have someone in mind inside their organization if Lundqvist gets hurt or his play slips??

They have like 5 goaltending prospects, including a very good one in Shesterkin, plus Halverson, Nell, Skapski, Huska, Wall.

They're fine. They'll probably sign a vet to back up Lundqvist for a year or two.

Expected trade and return for Stepan imo.

Hoped for Dvorak+DeAngelo, fair deal with 7th+DeAngelo, did not want Strome+DeAngelo.

They will find a legit NHL back up. They have prospects who may not be ready this year. They also have a goalie coach who has a track record of taking back ups and turning them into starters (Raanta, Talbot).

You could argue they have the strongest goalie prospect system in the NHL

Yeah the problem is there will never be another Lundqvist or there is unlikely to be. Who else other than Brodeur or Roy has been that good in the playoffs the last 30 years. I think this is like Mariano Rivera when he left. You realize you aren't replacing him no matter what you do

I don't see how this isnt a win for both sides.

Arizona gets someone who can play all three zones, eat big minutes, and add 50-60pts. They also get an above average back up who can potentially be a good starter. Arizona loses a prospect and a top 10 draft pick, however they have a deep prospect pool so this doesnt hurt too bad.

Rangers shed cap and a back up goalie they were going to lose at the end of the year for nothing. Stepan is great but the rangers need the money and prospects to fill up the pool. They also get a serivable bottom pair RHD who can grow for under 1m. Stepan will be hard to replace but if they make a move for a 2 year deal for Jumbo Joe in the offseason then this is a massive win for NYR.

They have one of the top goalie prospects in the world in Shestorkin (don't know how to actually spell his name)

massive overpay, Duchene can walk in 2

That's another reason Sakic needs to lower his price. Nevermind Duchene being highly injury prone but the fact he's a UFA in 2 seasons. I'm thinking in the end he gets a first rounder and either a big D or O prospect but not both

Are any ready to make the jump is the question? Pens have Tristan Jarry backing up Matt Murray but the Pens organization wants him in the AHL playing and not sitting on the bench. Looking at the Hartford Wolfpack it doesn't look anyone there is ready to make the jump to the NHL.

Philly has the strongest goalie prospect pool in the NHL. There is no competition.

I haven't looked but how many of them are international? Because that's never a lock. The Isles have two guys who basically are the best in their respective countries in Soderstrom and Sorokin but who knows if that ever translates to the NHL ice surface. It never did with Salo.

Longer term 21 year old Russian Igor Shestyorkin is a very good prospect who dominated the KHL last year.

For next season or even two seasons sign one of Mason, Condon, Bernier, Elliott, Johnson or Nilsson to play around 25 games. They're all very capable of that and New York is one of the more desired places for players to sign (and also for their wives).

Lundqvist is still a very good goalie who should be good for around 60 games a year for at least the next two seasons. Going much past 60 is when you'll see him start to wear out. He should no longer be counted on for 65-75 games like he once was.

I'm not thrilled but I'm recently content. Gorton was able to get a top 10 pick which the Rangers never have, plus a D'Angelo who could be real good.

Gonna miss you Stepan. He was a solid 1C despite what some will say here. Good luck to Raanta; I enjoy seeing talbot have success in EDM and wish the same for Raanta in ARZ

He signed a three contract with Saint Petersburg, which also makes no sense for the Rangers. Shouldn't Shestyorkin be getting seasoning in Hartford for the NHL style of hockey? Just delays his debut in the NHL.

I guess you have to ask yourself if you think Derek Stepan is better than what the 7th overall pick will be in the draft.

Weak draft, so..

To Rangers HFers all this week who were insistent that Stepan would cost Domi/Dvorak/Strome/Keller/Chychrun.

latest

I said I thought Dvorak and 23rd was fair value.

I never said it would cost that, please feel free to quote me with those exact words. I just said the Rangers wouldn't trade their #1 center for secondary prospects. I also came down from the 7th to the 23rd pick and was wrong on that, obviously.

So while you're looking for my words and will now prop up Stepan as a number 1 center after days of bashing him and saying we overvalue him, see above image. Thanks.
