If I'm Sateri, I say f*** it and stay home lol.

I'm a Coyotes fan, but this made no sense for a move to make. You trade Wedgewood for spare change (they weren't getting much) but then pick up a bigger question mark who's coming to challenge.

I mean, it's probably going to guarantee Sateri NHL games since Arizona traded Wedgewood, so it's not the worst thing for him. I don't know if Sateri actually wants to try to play in the NHL next season, or just decided to leverage the Olympics into a contract for the rest of this season to make a little extra money with his Euro season done. I assume he'd probably just return to Europe next season, but if he looks decent in the NHL it probably gives him a couple more options if he wants them.

Hope he does well, I love seeing players come back and at least get a few reps in the NHL later on in their careers, it's always fun. Wish him the best

Can't believe Leafs wouldn't pick up Hammond from Habs for minor leaguer? He was good in Montreal. Could have been story of playoffs

Toronto had to put him on waivers, per the CBA, since Sateri was coming from a Euro league.
Both TOR and Sateri knew the risk, but wanted to chance it

I am aware of the rule. I am unaware of what tangible problem it addresses. Waivers on moving up and down makes sense, it forces teams to be purposeful about their moves and is a mechanism that helps players stay in the NHL. Waivers on entry does the exact opposite, it harms players trying to get into the NHL by kneecapping their agency. You could say it acts as a kind of NHL-AHL mid-season hegemony but it's not obvious that that is a problem in the first place let alone one that needs to be solved.

Does shrewd translate to “unable to sign your own free agents so you need to take someone else’s”

Waiver system for signings like this makes no sense. Who exactly does this help. Surely not either party that originally wanted this transaction to take place.

It helps prevent cap circumvention by way of stashing Russian and Czech and Swedish players in their home countries for the first 5 months of the season.

Or do you let Kucherov play for CSKA until March, then sign a 3 month contract with Tampa for April and the playoffs?

It's to keep teams from "parking" UFA's in Europe with the plan being to sign them for a playoff run.

How is that better than just signing them in the first place, you get a mid season acquisition for the player but you also have to play the rest of your season without the player, and any UFA who can't command an NHL contract at the start of the season and would accept that arrangement is not going to be the impact player that would make such a signing problematic for the league

So is anyone in Leaf nation going to hold Dubas accountable for failing to address the glaring weakness in net this trade deadline? I was sure he'd add a guy but barring anything last minute it appears not. I'm sorry, but you cannot be rolling into a 1st round matchup with the Lightning or Panthers with Jack Campbell or that other AHL guy they just called up. I see another 1st round exit upcoming.

We could add Hasek and Gretzky in their prime and you would still see a first round exit. You trashed the Gio deal repeatedly even though you later said it was a good move.

Or maybe Soup regains his all star form and he saved trading unnecessary assets. Can only play one goalie at a time. You seem pretty obsessed with the Leafs lately?

I'd refuse to report to Arizona if I were Sateri since he signed from Europe to play in Toronto and then just wait for the off-season.
Toronto was signing him as desperation. In offseason they can find a more proven backup. Sateri doesnt exactly ha e long proven nhl track revord that he can hold lut and expect contract nhl contract next season. Sateris best chance at getting nhl contract nect season is to go to arizona and perform.
