How is that better than just signing them in the first place, you get a mid season acquisition for the player but you also have to play the rest of your season without the player, and any UFA who can't command an NHL contract at the start of the season and would accept that arrangement is not going to be the impact player that would make such a signing problematic for the league

It goes back to Reijo Ruotsalainen with the Oilers who was very much an impact player. But the 80s was a different time of course

It's actually disturbing to see how many posters on this site have such unhealthy obsessions with the Leafs and their fans. The reality is that 99.99% of Leafs fans had never heard of this guy until today, and don't know or care that he got claimed. But this truth is inconvenient, as it gets in the way of the creepy little group fantasy.
I don’t hate the Leafs, I hate their fans so anything bad for the Leafs is a good thing.
Now understand, I’m a Chicago child of the 70’s - 80’s. Raised to hate the Blues, Red Wings and (North) Stars. The Leafs were in that division too ((Norris) but we’re always rather insignificant. I didn’t care about them one way or the other.
Then in the 90’s I discovered this site. Was exposed to MANY Leaf fans who think
every prospect is a star
their 3rd liners are 1st liners everywhere else. The refs always cheat against them.
They would be champs every year.

So in a nut shell it’s the people on this site that make me happy when the $beet hits the fan in Toronto.

 Which part? That Lou would make life miserable for the GM that claimed him, or that Dubas has no respect in GM circles? Both.

That's what you want Lou focusing on, making life miserable over a waiver claim not his capped out seniors center of a team with 0 future.

It’s not a loophole. There’s a legit reason for this rule and there would be for more issues if it wasn’t in place.
Agree. If the Leafs want him that bad sign him in the off season. He's not making a big difference these next 20 game.

You understand how bat shit crazy that sound right?

I wasn’t on-line in the earliest days of HFBoards so I don’t know how bad it was, but we are people Bruh, and you shouldn’t hate people who never wronged you. Ballard made Leaf’s fans suffer for decades, and nobody pays more with their wallets to support their team - which continually used them and disappointed, so it’s not like we’ve had some easy ride. On top of that, everybody hates us even though most of them, like you, need to stretch in order to justify their hate, and more often than not it’s them getting big-mad over some interweb nonsense from an extreme minority of fans, which from what you described, are behaviours that are common and easily found amongst the other fanbases.:dunno:

You have to be some kind of genius to think this is limited to Leaf fans. I'm sure it has nothing to do with Toronto having one of the biggest, if not the biggest, fanbase in the NHL.

Veterans like Spezza and Perry can tell teams to F off.

Perry got asked during his season of MTL if he would join other teams. He said he would only play for them which was nice.

Younger players can't do that.
Sateri is 32 lol, if he wanted to sign back with a team in the KHL, I don't see it being a problem as the season had ended.

I know it’s the sheer number of posts having an impact.
I can tell you though when Hawk fan has a bad take others bring him down to earth.
I was once told by Roger in roughly 2008/9 that the Hawks needed a great center like Antropov and he could be had for Sharp PLUS! When Hawk fans laughed at that many leaf fans agreed with Roger.

Leafs fans are the only ones who think their prospects will be stars? it's called homerism and every fan from every team in every sport does it
I hate how everyone hates us just for the hell of it,

Like why are people still talking about this waiver claim?
If any team other than Toronto being part of this would be no more than 2 pages

Getting handshake deals with players so they start the season overseas and then get signed near TDL to boost the team.

Yeah, but how many worthwhile players want to do that? And if there really is an appetite for that, what's stopping them from doing what Mike Fisher and Justin Williams did and just not signing with anyone before signing near the TDL? And if they're not subjected to re-entry waives, which I believe to be true, why should Euro free agents?

Sure, but if this player is good enough to be worth a hand shake at the start of the season, they're already giving up money by playing in Europe rather than the NHL for most of the season, so why not all the money rather than some of it?

And if the worry of boosting teams this way is real, why aren't guys like Williams and Fisher subjected to waivers as well?

I can't help but think the answer to both of these questions is because it isn't really a real worry. There's not enough talent in Europe for this to be an actual source of major boosting unless players are deliberately doing it to help teams, and there's already a loophole if they want to. Maybe once upon a time this mattered but not now.
