This screams the Oilers.

But seriously, what the heck has happened to him? It's just a buy-out, not a contract termination?

Some contender is going to sign Vermette on the cheap.

What a weird move by Zona.

Chicago should bring him back for under 1M.

If he's not retiring, the Blackhawks should offer him a Brad Richards special.

Any combination of Toews-Anisimov-Vermette-Kruger down the middle would be great.

I'm guessing they asked him to waive his NMC and he refused? Otherwise you have to think he'd have been traded. Seems very odd to buy him out though.

I very well could be wrong, but since he has a NMC, I don't think he goes through waivers. I assume he'll just sign with another team after being bought out. There's a lot of teams that could use center depth so he'll have lots of options.

He's really not that good. I like the move. Chayka must think Strome or Dvorak are ready. Or he' making more room to sign Rieder.

Even if he's not that good, still a weird move. Coyotes doesn't seem to need the cap this season, and he's still serviceable guy. They will need someone to replace him on the roster, and pay him the buyout money, which should probably be pretty close to actual 3,75m$ they need to pay him?

Full NMC, but is an impending UFA. Is he required to be protected in expansion draft?

If so, this could be the reason for the buyout.

While I'm a little surprised they couldn't trade him for a conditional pick or something, this otherwise doesn't surprise me as much as everyone else. Vermette fell off a cliff this past season--his 17 goals were buoyed by a high shooting %--and at this point he's a borderline 4th liner.

Right since Vermette has a full no move clause, He can waive it and be bought out immediately and doesn't have to go on waiver.

Took such a steep decline over the last 2 years.

What?

12-13 13-8-21 in 48
13-14 21-24-45 in 82
14-15 13-25-38 in 82
15-16 17-21-38 in 76

He has been pretty consistently at slightly less than 0.5 ppg for the last 4 years. I have no idea what steep decline you are talking about
