Are Stamkos and Tavares both locks for Team Canada?

Stamkos, yes. It’s really valuable to have a guy who can play both wing and C with that kind of offensive pop.

Suspect Tavares makes it as a spare forward, for leadership and depth purposes. They have better options at C and the way these teams are usually constructed, they will probably go with a more natural bottom-6 winger (e.g. Wilson) rather than ask a skilled center to play that role.

What leadership qualities does Tavares add to Team Canada that a dozen or more players that are already on the roster don't do already?

Stamkos and Tavares are both having great seasons and it would be cool to see if it happened. Back in 2008 and 2009, you'd have expected them to have become Team Canada staples by 2014 and 2018.

why would either make the team ahead of John Tavares or Steven Stamkos?

It’s not happening.

it’s gonna happen. Wilson will bring an element that those two can’t provide. Need one player with grit on the team. Stamkos will be on the team. Tavares-no nothing player. Will bring zero to Canada.

If I had to pick one, Stamkos. He is the better goal scorer and has won a lot in his career.

Tavares is too slow and I just feel like there are other players I think should be there over him

Marchand is on the team - there’s your grit.

Tavares made the last two TCs, he captained the Juniors during perhaps their most famous performance of the 21st century, he’s the captain of the Maple Leafs having a PPG season, and he’s inarguably one of the 12 best forwards Canada could send.

They might take Tom Wilson - they’re not taking him over John Tavares, give your head a shake.

Career average of 52.3% is considered insane? Or are you just using recency bias? By comparison Crosby's career average is 52%, Stamkos 49.8%, ROR 55.7%, Bergeron 57.5%

So JT is about on par with Sid, slightly ahead of Stamkos...but behind ROR and Bergeron. So does he make team Canada? I think he definitely does, but it's not because of his "insane faceoff percentage"
I'm not sure why you would look at career numbers in this instance. It was a mention in the context of this year.

This year they are offensively neck in neck with one having a dramatically higher faceoff percentage. You may want to call it recency bias but I call it "what are they doing this year for a tournament this year, not 5 years ago" because there is a reason having good year helps you get on the team.

I'm not saying he's a lock, there are a lot of ways one could go. I'm just not seeing strong reasons to put Stamkos ahead of him.

I think that Stamkos is close to a lock at this point. He has a clear role on the team given Canada's lack of shooters and he's proving a lot this year with Kucherov and Point out. I'd say that Tavares has a good chance to make the team after getting off to a good start this year but he's not a lock.
