Stamkos: I wasn’t sure at the start of the season but he has been great this year. Pretty much a lock.

Tavares: He has also been great but I wouldn’t consider him a lock like Stamkos. That being said he will probably make the team. Personally have him as the 13th or 14th forward.
You have 12 players above the a guy who’s top 10 in nhl scoring, let alone scoring for Canadians only? Does that seem off to you?

Well Andrew Peters says the NHL is meeting today over not sending NHL players to China because of the potential 3 week quarantine the owners will be footing the bill for if a player tests positive.

So no, they are not a lock as of yet. Before people say he is a hack, he broke the Eichel trade…

The guy was on the 2014 team that won gold, the 2016 world cup team that won gold, and he is, at this moment, tied for a spot in the top 10 in pts all while being one of the premier faceoff-takers and captaining his team to one of the top records in the league....yet many people see him as a 13th fwd or not on the team at all...its crazy to me.

I think everyone is overthinking it with the "slow" or "not a natural winger" bs. You can put him out in any situation. At the end of the day he's still one of the very best players in the world. He's making this team

Agreed.

Stamkos, yes. It’s really valuable to have a guy who can play both wing and C with that kind of offensive pop.

Suspect Tavares makes it as a spare forward, for leadership and depth purposes. They have better options at C and the way these teams are usually constructed, they will probably go with a more natural bottom-6 winger (e.g. Wilson) rather than ask a skilled center to play that role.

What exactly has Tavares done to prove his “leadership” skills? Every team he’s been on has underachieved

It' strange how everything you said about Stamkos is equally true for Tavares but they should take one and the other is doubtful. Doesn't seem objective.

Canada has an embarrassment of riches but both can play wing so they have good chances.

Because right handed snipers who can send bullets from the left circle are damn near priceless, especially on the PP.

Tavares is simply the more replaceable player, when you have the whole Canadian talent pool to choose from.

Tavares is going to make it because he did that full page ad dressed in the most ridiculous outfit.

"I'll do anything to make Team Canada"

He's a skilled player, but he's really f***ing slow.
Who cares if he's slow? Aren't they playing on an Olympic size rink? The pace of the game is much slower on big ice than on NHL ice. He will be fine.

Edit: nvm - it looks like it will be an NHL rink.

I think it's a game of inches thing. I could counter with JT's insane faceoff percentage.
You are now basically presenting a new case,so now it's because he's right handed and more of a goal scorer? That might work out but considering the huge number of factors they will have to take into consideration it could go several ways. I'm not going to add up all the right handed shots but if you figure that and Stamkos's extra goal this year will be all the difference I won't argue with you, but it doesn't sound very decisive to me.

They shouldn't be on the team.

Canada has plenty enough scorers. They won't have a problem stocking PP1. They need players who can skate all 180 feet.

It’s not a new case at all. Go back and read my first post again, there’s no change in subject.

Stamkos is the second- or third-best Canadian LW (depending what you think of Marchand and Huberdeau) with a specific skillset (RH sniper) that makes him a deadly asset on the PP. He’s not out of place at the international level as a C, especially when you’ve got a glut of elite defensive matchup guys at that position.

Tavares isn’t way off the mark, but he’s neither a top-6 LW nor a top-6 center in this context. Assuming they want guys like Bergeron and Wilson to fill in the bottom-6 (which they almost always do, because they want guys who don’t need to adjust to an unnatural role during a short tournament) then it doesn’t make sense to replace one of them with Tavares.

I can see them adding him as a 13th/14th forward for injury insurance, because he’s in that short list of candidates if a top-6 guy goes down, but as a coach you’re going to have a lot more options to begin the tournament if you start with Stamkos on the active roster and go from there.

I think that they will both make it. Personally I have:

Marchand- Bergeron- Crosby
MacKinnon- McDavid- Marner
Huberdeau- Stamkos- Stone
Perron- O'Reilly- Tavares
X: Bertuzzi, Couturier

That doesn't negate the face off factor. Maybe Tavares would be better in one of the center slots.

McDavid and Crosby are absolute locks for the top two C spots.

It’s almost certain that they take at least one if not both of Bergeron and Couturier in the bottom 6. If one of them isn’t available, they can always go with O’Reilly.

They won’t need another guy who can take faceoffs. At least, not at the cost of potentially losing the best candidates for matchup/role purposes.

Wilson as in Tom Wilson? That would be quite the stupid pick. With IIHF rules, he is a net negative, IMO.
