I got no problem with JT having the C, it's honestly the most overrated title in sports. What does he really do? Be the one to talk to the Refs? Maybe but I've see that with non-lettered players plenty of times.

To me it should have been Morgan just because he stuck it out through those tough years and still became a top 20 Dman in the NHL. That kind of stuff can ruin a player.... Look at the Oilers 2007 - 2013 player development.

And Mo's Dad was the greatest draft reaction ever, do it for him!
I think football might be the only sport where a captain is worthwhile.

Usually only because it's normally the QB and the best defensive player and they are the ones who relay the plays from the sidelines.

I've enjoyed the shift to a more defensively minded play style, seems the boys are buying in. Now I hope this isn't just a blip in the radar of playing like this because we've been down defenseman, and once we're at 100% again the defensive responsibilities the forwards have been playing with goes away.

I hope we can keep this attitude moving forward, as the old phrase goes, defense wins championships.

Their relationship with Keefe has been interesting but good lord the Babcock apologia in this thread is ridiculous.

3x Cup Winner Chris Chelios: “What he did to [Mike] Modano was incredibly disrespectful. What he did to, just recently, [Jason] Spezza in Toronto — those were the things that are so unnecessary,” he explained.

“Kenny Holland and Jim Nill, for three days, argued with him. So what Babs ended up doing was, he suited up seven D for the first time ever …. He played me the opening shift, and then didn’t play me another shift the rest of the game. That was his way of showing Kenny and Jim Nill he’s not going to be told what to do,” Chelios explained, later stating that he felt Babcock “had it out for me from the beginning.”

1x Cup Winner Johan Franzen: “But then he’s a terrible man, the worst person I’ve ever met. A bully who had a go at people, it could be cleaners in the Detroit arena or anyone. He jumped on people just because.”

4x Cup Winner Darren McCarty: “That’s the key. In spite of him, right? In spite of him. And I learned that more getting into ’09 because we won in ’08 in spite of him and lost in ’09 because of him. That’s exactly the thing because he misused (Pavel) Datsyuk, (Henrik) Zetterberg and just because he’s stubborn and that was his way.”

This is just how he treated his proven veterans and there's still people out there acting like if he wasn't tied down by Dubas and the kids, he'd still be a beloved figure. Enough. Babcock killed himself and Keefe is still here, by my count they've killed no coaches so far.

Those aren't the "captains" They are just the ones with the helmet that has the radio link because you can only have one on the field at at time. 99.99% of the time it is the QB and Middle Linebacker because they are the most important player on the field

The captains in football all have a C logo on their jersey it's the upper right corner. Usually 7 or 8 people per team.

I believe the players themselves vote on their captains, but those 2 probably are the most important players. I think it just so happens that those 2 positions require the highest level of IQ and talent to play at a high level.

Sounds like you're reaching for clues, I already called out WN88 and MR44 earlier in this thread. But cool story about his Dad. I'm sure it makes Johnny Toronto look like a better captain in your warped world view.

What the f*** are you talking about? I said that Captaincy in hockey isn't that important and it really isn't. Explain to me what JT and only JT is allowed to do as Captain. Why he is so bad at it that he should give the C to someone else?

Does him being captain disqualify others from talking to the Refs? Media? Teammates? Coach? No.

If you can't tell that a reason for giving someone the C is his dad's reaction at the Draft is sarcasm then that's your fault.

I am a big believer in leadership from several individuals affecting a hockey team's chances to win in the regular season and playoffs so your post rings hollow and bullshitt-y.

Maybe you should blame someone else for your daddy issues.

Yes, the players vote in the NFL for Captains. Sometime coaches make suggestions to troll other teams. There was a case a while back I think it was the RGIII draft day trade where the team that traded him away took the 6 players they drafted with the pick package and made them the Captains for the day vs Washington.

The coaches pick who they want to wear the special helmet, It's really just positional thing. It could be the least popular person on the team. In the NFL with so many injuries it could be the 3rd string guy making his NFL debut that got claimed off waivers or was on the practice squad last week.

Seriously, what the f*** are you talking about. If you honestly believe that the make or break reason the Leafs lost in the first round is because Tavares and not Matthews is the captain was you are delusional....

Like YOU said Leadership is a team effort then you are proving my point. The actual person with the C doesn't matter so why do you care so much so that you want Tavares stripped of it.

I guess you've never seen the clip of Morgan's Dad at the draft, so it makes sense you didn't get that joke.

The only joke I got is you chirping at me with circular faulty logic. You haven't said one substantial thing so far except make fun of Rielly's Dad . I guess that is what we are talking about.

As a matter of fact, in terms of after-play discussion, especially around penalties, players OTHER than the captain (or an alternate is he is not available) are not supposed to be talking to the refs. It was a rule put in place MANY years ago to discourage crowds at the penalty box and disruption of the game by needless yacking. Do your homework before you toss out your opinions on social media. You'll save us all a lot of time and yourself from embarrassment.

Matthews is a problem right now and not playing like he did last year. The effort is not there. Last season he was a puck hound and was getting pucks everywhere. He had lots of hits also. This year he is peeling off hits, not much effort compared to last year. He is on pace for 36 goals (or close to it) and that is not what his contract demands. Its like either he is hurt and came into camp not in shape and just going through the motions. Last year, he was unstoppable. This year he is 28th in goals and only has 12 in 26 games. Last season he led the league in goals from the starting gate. Does anyone else see a problem here?

Has anyone changed their mind on Marner?

It would be too easy to name names.

Not really.

I see a dominant two-way forward playing well at both ends of the ice -- despite the OT giveaway in Tampa.

I don't think we're seeing the games through the same lens.

Im more confused by the question. Are they coach killers? If they both decide any coach is fired, they are fired unless he is the GM as well. Then it's a tie.

No he did not. Unless scoring was way down league wide to start the season last year. He had 7 goals in his first 18 games. Then he went out and got 10 in the next 7, and wasn't it like 31 goals in the last 30 games or something?

That's the problem, especially in a place like Toronto. Get 60 goals, and then when you're on a pace for "only" 40 or so goals, then you've regressed or don't care, or don't show effort, or whatever.

Matthews is fine, he is still hounding pucks, and stripping them. His only issue early on was missing the net with his shots. In fact if you look at his hits/60m......last year 2.67 vs 4.94 this year. Actually he is pace for his best assist total even.

So again....where is the problem?

You are the one who claimed Tavares should be stripped of the captaincy and given to Matthews without giving a reason after I asked multiple time. Here is you chance again.
