“You just have to keep moving,” he said. “I’m not saying you mow the thing down at 60 miles an hour because that’s not safe either, but the turkey is not going to lay down under your tires and let itself be killed.”

When I lived in Mass I worked in Belmont/Cambridge for about 2 years. There was a neighborhood turkey that use to sit on cars in the parking lot and would chase its reflection in the hubcaps of exiting cars on Blanchard Rd. he never got hit. Fearless....

I live in Watertown, which abuts both Belmont & Cambridge.

Wild turkeys amble about on occasion. Regardless of the advice proffered in the piece, I simply avoid them.

Damn things.

One of the small (very small) list of things I miss about Mass is Mt. Auburn Cemetery. As a photographer, then, there was no better spot.

Those birds are assholes.

I've been chased as I walked to my apartment before and it was terrifying. I had one of them perch himself on the roof rack of my brand new car as well.

We had an uptick in coyotes about a year ago and there haven't been many around and those that are, are not aggressive.

Bonus is I got my 11 year old practicing her pitching before school today as well...

You know, I just went by there on my way into town. It's actually in Watertown.

You don't miss Mass? I was broke at various times over the past ten plus years, moving back to Michigan, "living" in the Cleveland area, in Denver, which I hated even more than Ohio, which is saying something.

I'm an agnostic, but suspect there's more than meets the eye.

If so, by saving scrupulously and through the post humous largesse of my eldest brother Greg, I was able to return to the only place I ever wanted to live nearly two years ago.

Metaphorically kissing the ground I walk on, I'm exceptionally lucky & blessed beyond words.

Love me some pork shoulder. Alden & Harlow in Harvard Square features a fine one.
I'm at the point where I'm a bbq snob and really will only eat my own stuff. Where I live now, we have BT's Smokehouse, which everyone raves about, but I find to be overly expensive and marginal at best. If I make it, I get to customize it specifically to my own tastes, so I just do that now. I tend to do a lot of quicker smokes over shoulder or brisket, because they take a long time. So a lot of ribs and chicken is my usual go to since those are only like 4-5 hours compared to 12-14 hours.

There are quite a few images in my portfolio from all over those grounds. One of my favorite places on earth.

Nope. don't miss it. The scarcity philosophy that plagued me there was unbearable. I made a lot of bad decisions--I could never return to those constraints or the toxic family energy.
The sun here, the wide open landscape is responsible for reducing an anxiety disorder that was crushing (almost disabling) in Mass. I am a different person, able to embrace and engage with abundance and joy. There is a melting into nature here which is valued and intoxicating--my sister visited last fall and she kept staring at me. When I asked her why, she said she found it remarkable that I was a completely different and joyful person. She hardly recognized me. I own my own business here which I wouldn't even have considered in Mass. It has been 5 years of gratitude and being awe-struck.

The economics of it as well just made sense-thats a longer story.

and yes, your alluding to a higher connection. I feel it deeply here.
Thich Nhat Hanh would love your "kissing the ground" description :)

I would do that, too - if I had a backyard, a smoker, and the expertise to pull it off.

Alas and alack, at present I do not.

What about an air fryer? Can you use these in your kitchen, and how much does a decent but inexpensive one cost? I should ask my brother Michael, an IT specialist with Samsung and a prepper.

Hey @Bruinaura how are you doing? Just want to check in with you :)
It depends on what day you ask. Also the time of day, what the weather is, and whether I've had any chocolate.

Seriously.

Most days I want to stay in bed but I drag myself out and go to work. And church. Stay busy.

I want to get another dog but no prospects on the immediate horizon.

Just finished the claim forms for the 47-year-old life insurance policy on my mom. It's not a lot, as insurance goes, but better than nothing. Still rather have my mom though

And of course right now my Facebook memories are showing me all my old mother's day posts....

Anyhoo.... ultimately I'm fine.

Thanks for asking :)

Where do you live now?

Have also experienced life long, crippling anxiety and resultant depression. Diagnosed with manic depression in the early 80s,. when I went off to college (Emerson, theater arts).

Things are much, much better these days. I was a mess for many years.

I.love London. I love Paris. I even like DC.

Still, you couldn't pay me to live anywhere else.

Check Sarah Bakewell's "How to Live, Or a Life of Montaigne." Joh Kabat-Zinn. Simon Kritchley's "On. Bowie."

And "Frasier."

Watch "Frasier."

We have 2 different air fryers. One is the Ninja foodie, but the other one is a typical basket style one. Wings come out great in the basket style one, but not so much in the flatter Ninja one we have, so keep that in mind if you do get one. Everything else comes out good in the Ninja, plus it's a toaster oven, and it folds up for storage on the counter.

Smoking is really pretty basic. You just need a rig and the Weber Smokey Mountain is probably the easiest one to use. Once you get the venting set up to the temp you want, you pretty much let it rip and everything comes out perfect. If an idiot like me can do it, anyone can.

Thank you.

What's the basket style brand you have? Roughly how much for this or Ninja smoker?

And don't go reaching for that scepter just yet.

I am crown king of the idiots. There's a picture of me next to the description of same in the encyclopedia. (Webster's edition, 2021.)

I've been thinking on and off for a while about getting a smoker but have so far balked at forking out the cash - in Australia at least they are not cheap. Which size Weber do you have? I'm curious as to how much you can realistically cook at once with the smaller models.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was among the customers who were heartbroken by the news.

He started off a tweet with a single word: "Ouch."

"Surprised at how much this hurts," he added, saying The Main, according to him, had Montreal's "best" smoked meat.
