Apparently Hughes turned down Cutter Gauthier for 2023 5th OA

From TSN 690 just now.... via this I assume:

Flyers were high on Reinbacher as well..... in hindsight, would you have pulled the trigger?

I say yes Hughes shouldve taken the deal (provided Gauthier wouldve come to MTL)

tsn690's source?

Still, It's an interesting topic to debate, even if the proposal was never made.

At the end of the day, I would love it if we trade one of our d prospects for a forward prospect like Gauthier. Though, I think Reinbacher, Guhle, and Hutson are th only ones that could get us such a return. Maybe Xhekaj or Engstrom could one day though...

No… the most important positional player is top pairing / minute eating Dman which Orville Redenbacher will develop into

tsn690's source?

No way. Glad Hughes turned it down. He's much too smart to fall for that con by Briere. It was known that Gauthier didn't want to play in Canada. And the more that comes out, this guy sounds like a selfish, self-entitled prima-donna. And besides that, I am not impressed with him in hockey terms.

A new GM offering you his shiny new toy barely one-year post-draft would raise a lot of red flags. If Gauthier was signed to an ELC, I would consider the offer. Offering signing rights? That smell like a scam.

Trading the 5th OV from a weak draft for the 5th OV of a deeper draft who is younger and plays a more valuable position.
all that matters is the projection of the players going forward from this point. If you now have Gauthier projected ahead of Reinbacher, you do it. If not, you don't.

And that Marc Dumont article is based on this Philly beat writing claiming he can confirm the Flyers offered Gauthier for the 5th OA pick.

Not sure how credible this Philly writer is...

I also would not have done that trade from a Habs POV.

The Habs seemed really set on picking Reinbacher in the last draft but if they did want a forward at 5 there were still some very good forwards still available for them to choose from, who were likely as good as or maybe even better than what Gauthier was, depending on who you ask I guess..

I'd like to play devil's advocate here and say Hughes should've taken the deal provided Gauthier DIDN'T come here.

No. It was good that Hughes passed.

If he had made the trade it would be a top D potential for a top W potential sequel.

I think the Flyers made a mistake not burning the one year ELC. But. I think given Gauthiers reaction he would be a guy I would expect to never get a fondness for Montreal and always look to become a UFA asap.

I'd lean no even without the whole drama of him refusing to sign. But could stuff have been added to get it over the line, probably but would depend on interviewing Gauthier to find out what's really going on.

In the end it's not really surprising if that was a type of deal Hughes would consider then we probably would have just taken Leonard at 5.

I would have counter offered. Cutter to switch firsts. Flyers refused little doubt. I probably would have put Florida pick in deal. See what they did?

Friedman was on Marek today, said Cutter wanted to turn Pro, Flyers couldn't do it because they were capped out. It drove wedge between them.

Not high on either of them, but would have taken Reinbacher ahead of Gauthier.

That being said, there were about 5 or 6 players I'd have taken before Reinbacher

My initial response was no way American Boy Cutter Gauthier would sign with us

Then I realized his last name was Gauthier, and that Philly engaged 18-20 teams that he was willing to sign with.

Very likely he was willing to sign with us.

Probably the more interesting question is if we responded with asking Philly to throw in the #22 pick that they had from the Provorov trade.

Gauthier + 22nd for 5th would start to be interesting for the Habs.
