Imaging I found to be incredibly frustrating. I did produce some nice images but I really like actually seeing the fuzzy thing. I about quit astronomy because of it.
I'm there at this point. I sold most of my visual stuff and sunk about $9k into imaging during the pandemic. I really regret it.

Either we're really old, or this whole "throwback" thing has really jumped the shark.

I mean Matthews and McDavid are pretty close to 30 so I am starting to feel old at this point.

So I’m about 99% sure, beyond a reasonable amount of doubt that I’ve developed an allergy to cannabis. Last few days it appears to be getting progressively worse. Just a few minutes ago my face swelled up and my hay fever was the worst it’s ever been. I had been smoking a bit more and more lately to relax in the evening and sleep. It was working out ok. Sucks to be me I guess. Could be much worse.

Also - Did anyone else here know that some consider the term marijuana racist? I am just finding this out now.

Will it be easy to get back home if there's a 12FT ocean swell settling into the city? These hurricanes are nuts. All those poor people, I'd be terrified.

I have nightmares about huge floods every now and then. Humongous bodies of water closing in on my location. Not fun. 1000x worse to actually live it and know your family is in direct danger and everything you own is most likely getting destroyed.

Best of luck to you bro.

It recedes really quickly along the coast. Although I’m from Orlando so it’s mostly just wind and trees down. Some flooding but no surge.

Loving the new gig. Three fourteens. Off the next four days. Hourly management is the way to go.
i was working three twelves not too long ago. the four off days was incredible. only problem was the work i was doing was tearing up my back and knees real bad. without that i'd love to go back to a three or four day week.

It was moderately interesting, though unsurprisingly a pretty high level view on what they're doing.

  • Use combination of tracking data and event data to model what events lead to reward (goals, shots, xG)
  • Explore what different line combinations lead to positive outcomes (I didn't have time to get in a question about how they deal with the general inertia of hockey people and their unwillingness to properly explore this for long enough, but I'm gonna reach out to ask that)
  • Analytical team is heavily involved in team building process (to what extend, I don't know, but he did spend a bit of time talking about that)
  • Some work on modeling passing lanes (early outcome is that forwards are better at fitting pucks into narrower passing lanes)
Someone in the audience asked what analytically lead to the decision to move away from smaller mobile D-men like Keith, and toward larger shutdown D-men like Vlasic, which I thought was a profoundly stupid question. It did not sound on Radke's response like that was a analytically driven decision.

I wonder what sort of camera angles they’re able to work with as data analysts. If they’re measuring something like passing efficiency through lanes, a broadcast view probably won’t cut it.

The tracking data is collected by another company (which I'm guessing either have access to some other camera angle, or works with known angles from the broadcast) yields x,y,z coordinates (I didn't ask, but I assume the z is for mainly for the puck, since we don't see too many players out there jumping), and (according to the paper they published as part of their passing data work) has a margin of error between 1-3 inches, so it's surprisingly accurate.

So the passing lanes is just using those coordinates and using various linear algebra techniques to measure it distance from the players to the passing lanes. I didn't hear him mention anything about considering saucer passes, and how they might affect completion.

That paper can be found here:
