Just got back from our driving vaca to Monument Valley, Moab, Arches, Canyonlands, Capital Reef, and Zion. Lots of hiking (over 65 miles and did Angels Landing), beauty, and fun. We are going to circle back next year for Antelope Canyon, the Wave, Bryce, and other side of Zion. It was a great 10 days. So much to see out west!

So in tge news today ...in Manhattan...an axe-weilding madman enters a McDonald's abd terrorizes tge patrons and staff...pokicexarest hom..then promptly he is released Without Bail!!!!

What jkbdvof Oublic Safety is this?

Who is madder...the crazy axe-weilder or tge justice authorities that let him go back out without even bail imposed.. they shoukd have not let hom out of custody pending full psychological evaluation or at least put an ankle tracking device on him with restriction not to leave his house pending full evaluation..

You can only theorize authorities want the crazies to aude in deportation...lettingbpitentential axe-murderers walk tge streets.

The authorities are nuts!!! AND the public tax dolklars paying for such idiocy.

Not trying to be morbid: how long does it take to put this queen in the ground?! Jeez….. Monarchy is the stuff of medieval times not modern times.

Is Chicago more dangerous now or does it just feel that way based on hype and narrative?

I’ve been living here since 2014 and I don’t ever remember hearing about this many people having this many run ins with violent criminals in the major neighborhoods north of Chicago’s south and south west sides.

Some woman was almost kidnapped walking around west loop at 8:45 in the morning last week. She was apparently hanging on for life trying not to get thrown into a minivan. Last week some crazy dude was on a divvy bike and almost hit me in the crosswalk as I was walking through. I threw my arms up at him like “watch where you’re going!”, he slammed his divvy bike to the ground ran up to me and said “if you ever disrespect me like that again I’ll f***ing kill you”. 10am in the Gold Coast.

I don’t remember this stuff being a real concern up until very recently. It used to be concentrated in the bad neighborhoods S and SW but now it seems like anything can happen anywhere and anytime of day.

Its the most dangerous it's been since late 90's

This year is now on track for highest 4th highest homicides since late 90's (Last year was highest)

2022_murder_trend_092722-495x417.png

One could argue it may be as violent or worse now given the advances in medical care, quicker medical response and especially emergency care since 90's when looking at how many survive wounds that likely would have been fatal in 70's/80's/90's

To date this year (And these are #'s that could be verified as city isn't well known for providing accurate data)
Shot & Killed: 490
Shot & Wounded: 2274
Total Shot: 2764
Total Homicides: 540

Also, it could be argued violence/crime is now more widespread thru city (As you noted) with downtown and red line having some of the most they have ever had while in past it could be argued it was isolated mostly to certain parts of city (For instance Cabrini Green, etc, etc before they were torn down)

The fact city is encrypting all police scanners in attempt to block trackers and others from listening in raises red flags on future #'s being reported as city will control the flow of information on crime

It's bad.

My brother and I were both forced to leave for economic reasons (companies up and pulled out). Him 4 years ago, me last year....but in both of our cases living in suburbs the crime was skyrocketing. Gangs and lots of random acts of violence. Not as many murders as the city but like you said just word of mouth, hearing about people we knew being involved in or witnessing incidents.

I've had my car for eight years this month, and only just now passed the 30,000 miles mark.

Spending 6ish of those years working from home and using my wife's SUV for all of our road trips except one clearly put a dent in the potential mileage on that thing. Huge difference from my previous car, a Toyota that surpassed 300k before I moved on.

Man, this hurricane coverage out of Florida is terrifying.

My sister lives down there. Thankfully on the NE coast area. It better calm down by the time it loops around up there.
