Take the job that is best for your career and the path you are thinking of taking. Out on your own or family shouldn't matter that much.

Definitely agree. The thing is, they are both paths I would love to go down. It's a tough choice. I'm excited to get the final occurs from both of them and sit there and figure out which one is best, because I know I can't go wrong.

That said, one big negative against the dealership is the hours. Overall, it's not bad at all - about 40 a week. But, you get one day of during the week, and the rest is roughly 9-7 every other day, as well as 9-3 on Saturday. I am young and want to be able to play softball and golf a lot, and working that late every night is really going to throw a wrinkle into that. Not to mention how unappealing that could become if I have a kid later down the road, but that's something to worry about later.

When the time comes, I'll probably literally do a pros and cons list for each and decide what is most important in those.

40 hour work weeks are a myth my friend. I work 7am-6pm then I am back online working 9pm to midnight (not every night; I work with Asian factories) but that grants me a lot of flexibility if I need it and I refuse to miss any time with my wife and daughter.

Like I said, it's not the quantity of hours that bothers me, it's how they're spread out. I would have no problem with 7-5 every week day. I just want to have a social life right now, and getting off of work at 7 doesn't seem appealing. Now, if that's the only choice I had - well, I would suck it up, because that's what you need to do. But when the other offer is much more pleasing, it's gonna be a negative of the other job. Not a deciding factor, but it's definitely a big factor to consider.

7 is not too bad but I am not in Chicago anymore. You will miss happy hours pending on the day but you won't miss nights out. I know my friends who are still in Chicago more often than not go out for late dinners then out. Everyone is different though.

Not that you would know this, but I don't live in Chicago. Live on the other side of the state. I'm not worried about missing out on the drinking - it's things like golfing and the softball leagues I play in. Though I guess there is a high likelihood that I'd be drinking during those :P

Yeah I had no idea. I always golf early so I can get out on the lake so I forget about golfing later. Time to find the late game softball league. I would not want to miss either so I can get where you are coming from.

For some. I make a good salary and my work weeks are strictly 7-4, mon-fri 99% of the time. Occasionally I'll have to work an extra couple hours, but I really do have a super cushy gig that allows me the 40 hour work week almost exclusively. Helps when you're good at what you do too. ;)

Started teaching my daughter to skate last week (she is two). She seems to enjoy it but she really loves watching her mom fall. Technically they are both learning to skate.

Beat my edit. Honestly, many IT professionals work far more than 40 hours in a week. Especially in the first 5-10 years in the field.

I'm on 11-12 years in the field, and things just got this way for me. Pretty sure it was similar for my brother. I'm also in a very unique position. Love my job. :thumbu:

If you include drive time, I work 8-6. Actual work time, it's 9AM to 5:15PM, I work through my lunch.

Not true. Company I work for is HUGE on not working a minute over 40 hours. They preach get here on time, work your ass off while you’re here, and leave the second the clock hits 4. I’ve got about a 10 minute commute each way so not bad at all, and traffic is never an issue. The days it snowed it took maybe 20 minutes.

Same with my wife’s job. Hell I doubt anyone in her department has worked 40 hours since she started there from what she tells me.

I’m in the accounting department, but what I said goes for everyone whether they’re a CSR, work an after-hours shift, or are the director of an entire department.

Nice company.

Literally no one I know works under 50 hours a week and we all do well. Maybe it is my industry but my wife works for an accounting firm and she 50+ hours a week as well.

My girlfriend works for an accounting firm, and they work 50-60 hours during tax season, but then just like 30-40 outside of that, and most of them take Friday’s off during the summer - or just work half a day at the most.

I work in the accounting dept of a non profit and work 40 or less every week. Salaried employee.

Also, including the drive time in work is kinda BS. That's on you where you chose to work and live. I say this as someone who has a daily 45 minute to an hour commute both ways every day.

I rarely, if ever, have to work over 40 hours per week at my main, full-time gig. 8-5 M-F (salary) with an hour lunch. I'd cut lunch down to leave earlier but the CEO doesn't allow it. My boss is the CMO and he is very, very into work-life balance. Tells us not to check email or do anything outside of work hours, accepts PTO requests 99.9% of the time, allows us to leave early or come late if need if things are going on. Super flexible. I'm also only person in my department that works out of our corporate office so I don't have anybody looking over my shoulder. I can pretty much do what I want as long as I'm getting my stuff done. I'm fortunate and don't take for granted where I'm at.

I just want to say I'm jealous of all of you.

It's been a long road to get to this point. I worked EMS and ER shifts for a number of years. And even now during hockey season I'm doing evenings some and weekends often so still a lot of time consumed but I never complain about any of it. I'm home every evening, I have holidays off, weekends off...I am fortunate and know it.

Very similar to my job. I'm an IT System Admin, and I report directly to the CFO, who is based out of our corporate HQ in St. Louis. I make my own hours, come and go as I please, work from home when I want. I'm basically my own boss. Salary is great. Benefits are outstanding. My health insurance is BCBS of Illinois $0 deductible PPO, and for me, my fiance, and my kids I only pay $300 a month. Our dental(according to my dentist) is one of the best plans they've ever seen. I have a $2500 limit per year for each individual on the plan. And that is paid for by the company. I pay $16 a month for vision. They match 50% up to 12% on 401k. I have 30 PTO/Sick days per year, and they roll over if they don't get used. All kinds of other smaller benefits like computer loans, company parties, etc. The whole company has a huge work/life balance belief, and in 2+ years I've yet to have a PTO day not approved, even when requesting it the same week I want to take it. We have 10 paid holidays off per year. Such a great gig. No desire to switch jobs right now, or for the foreseeable future. And I get to spend a ton of time on the web on various message boards as a bonus.
Yes, this was me bragging. Sorry.
