Not to turn this into a Simashev vs Silayev thread but holy shit Simashev only has 2 shots in his last 11 games. Simashev only has 18 shots in 26 games on the season. Silayev has 18 shots in his last 11 games. Silayev has 44 shots in 27 games on the season. He only had 1 the first 5 games so he's basically at 2 a game over the last 22. Both are playing 17 minutes a night with no PP time as well

Both are great defensively, both are great skaters, overall Silayev is little bit better I think, I like Simashev in D zone with the puck more, I like Silayev without the puck more in personal play one on one, Simashev I think is little bit better with understand the situation all over the ice around him. I think Simashev has more stick skills overall, Silayev from his starting speed has little more as potential defenseman who can sleep through the zone from the blue line to be second volume shooter.

I really like both.

torpedo back in action today
  • game had some extra jump to it. quick to pucks/on retrievals, assertive on the puck, aggressive in transition/making himself an option off the rush, really alert pinches, incorporated physicality on most shifts
  • saw him get beat a little more than usual off the rush today (particularly wide) and even cleanly at one point, which really doesnt happen. issue seemed to be twofold: MMG attackers were quick in transition/good at slipping behind defenses, and they were also surprisingly strong on the puck/great at leveraging their frames to protect it. first aspect kept silayev on his heels/in a position of having to recover more often, and second part inhibited his ability to get to the puck to make a play. now, this plagued TOR as whole, but i really only care about our boys performance and how he tries to adapt
  • it also didnt help that his stick wasnt the usual puck magnet it typically can be. good intensity with stickchecks and whatnot per usual, but just wasnt getting the same touches. best example came early on: good decision to stand up an entry at his blue line, successful poke attempt, and flat out whiffed the reception (which got him turned around)
  • i dont want this to sound like it was all bad, though. he was still hard on puck carriers, he still made a bunch of stops, he was still good with engulfing attackers along the boards, its just that rush defense gave him a bit more issue today
  • small area passing, particularly with starting breakouts, was so good that i kept double checking if it was actually him. quick decisions under pressure, staying in motion, getting pucks through traffic, mix of attempts (fore/back/shovel/etc). thats not to say his passes were perfect (most were good), but we're talking inches off the mark rather than full blown misfires like hes historically had
seems like he usually comes out of an extended break with great energy (be it from sitting or, in this case, scheduling). still some good things today, but looking for a bit more control to his overall game next viewing

I wasn't fully locked into the game but yeah I thought his play on the puck was quite good today while the defense was a bit more of a struggle than usual. He got beat pretty bad on that disallowed goal. Also caught out in no mans land a bit on the GA he was out for. Decided to play the passing lane instead of challenging the guy behind the net but then doesn't stop the pass either and the puck is in the net.

His recover ability is out of this world. Fans on a rolling puck which leads a breakaway against and he wipes it away like it’s nothing

A guy that big shouldn’t be able to catch up to a forward like that.

The forward was already moving the right way while Silayev had to change directions. Silayev also caught up so was he was able to ease up at the end.

It would be great seeing a 5’10” guy do that, we would say that’s why he can help defensively despite being small. One of the tallest players around doing that is a little crazy.

We can probably be patient with him and bring him over in his D+4 season as a replacement for Dillon.

Not sure what his contract situation is but would be nice if we could bring him to the AHL after two seasons in the KHL.

His deal is up after next year. I’m quite confident he’ll be better than a 36 year old Dillon by then.
