Yeah, first off. That's a Habs reporter, with no connections to Colorado. And what he said was in a radio hit with Kyper and Bourne, is that "Colorado is a type of team that would trade Rantanen if they can't sign him".

When in fact, Colorado has NEVER traded any pending UFAs (in a scenario like this) under this management, but has instead let multiple pieces walk in UFA (Grubauer, Kuemper, Kadri, Burakovsky to name just a few). And they re-signed Landeskog a whopping 1 day before UFA.

He didn’t even say that he’s heard anything on the subject! He just said that the Avs are a team that would make a trade, while that is absolutely the opposite of what the Avs have done for years. It was not some report, just his own opinion that is based on false premise in the first place.

Marners ask will be north of 13 million. Avs won't be able to afford that unless they move Rants. I assure you that if the avs land Marner, Rants will in fact be coming back. And he'll come in about 2 million cheaper. That said, Marner is free to go where ever he wants. This won't be a trade. If Marner leaves the Leafs can only offer Rants who is also a UFA a contract.

Some reporter with connections with the Avs reported over the weekend that the Avs will be trading Rantanen if he’s not re-signed by the TDL. It’s likely a ploy to put pressure on Rantanen and make him realize getting to FA isn’t going to be a cakewalk. By doing this, the Avs plant the seed he might play for any of several bad teams. And if not, he’ll now be asked countless questions by the media about his impending trade or free agency.

Would rather walk away from Marner and pocket the cap space, than give up Knies. Not happening. If Rantanen walks, maybe we'll try and sign him for free.

Marner also wants the money, but he grew up a die hard Leafs fan and wants to be in Toronto

See the difference ? Marner we actually have a strong chance at re-signing, trading him for Marner is losing em for nothing

We're not paying Rantanen the 14M or whatever he's asking for, he's not obligated to sign here. And even though Marner isn't, we have the extra year option + like I said, he grew up a Leafs fan

You can argue who you would rather start a new team with, or who's better, that's a different topic. Context matters.

Players rarely base their prime career contracts on childhood Fandom.

Rantanen >> Marner IMO. It is not that close even.
I say this as someone who really likes Marner and hopes LA somehow clears up cap and goes hard at him if he makes it to market.
