Honestly, if I'm Tre, I'm starting the year off with a monster deal:

Nylander for a #1 defenseman +

or

I make a deal for Sarros somehow.

Despite the jaw-dropping offense, the chasm in effort or defensive awareness is just too much to overlook.
How do you explain the 3 on 3 play when we double the pay compared to every other team's 3players

If the league was 3 on 3 we wouldn't make the playoffs.

Was busy got home after the game.
Watched condensed game on NHL.com

This is one horrible team in the d-zone, and it isn't just Samsonov.

The defense really, really sucks.

Okay, this is coaching. It really is coaching.

How many games are we seeing defenders floundering behind the goal line and no one covering the opposition in front of the net. This is peewee level positioning. We know they know better, but someone is teaching them this crap.

Glad you watched a 6 min clip to know it was coaching... those are the chances... it was goaltending.

This is what the organization deserves for not going to the AHL after his last game. Anyone with eyes can see that Samsonov is not an NHL goalie right now. We would get better production from the average AHL goalie right now, it's that bad and it has been that bad for a while.

I watched the goals ... 2 goals looked to be completely on Samsonov.

If you think having 3 Leafs defenders behind the goal line leaving a completely uncovered BJ in front of the net is good defense ... actually you don't think that. You know that was brutal. One goal was a deflection right in front of the net, with no defenseman around to tie up the stick. Liljegren not being able to stay on his skates giving them another goal.

Yeah, Samsonov sucks, but the defense was brutal.

Any competent goalie, they probably win 5-3.
They win because they should have outscored their horrible defense.

Easy to blame Samsonov for this one, and that's absolutely fair - he was completely horrendous.

But this team is just not good enough end to end. So many mistakes and lazy plays.

Sure, but you can't say any of that tonight. The Leafs were the superior team and got no saves all night.

Absolutely. But the rest of the team wasn't exactly stellar either.
The rest of the team was outstanding. What game did you watch tonight?

The Leafs gave up 19 shots in regulation, most of which were from the outside... You can't play much better than that. With a competent goalie this may have been a SO.

I still think regardless they will play him again for the next back to back. If you play Jones back to back and he gets hurt, then your left with Samsonov and a rookie AHL goalie who's probably not ready to play.

We saw practically from the start of last year when we lost to Washington how mentally fragile Samsonov is. He gets too down on himself and he's probably second guessing everything right now.

seriously tho they are bad
I don’t know if they suck but it’s hard to win when you can’t get a save. We dominated early in the first, go up 2-0 and Samsonov lets in a bad goal to end the period. We leave period 1 up 2-0 I don’t think this game is even close.

Every time we got a lead 30 seconds later it was gone and then we suck in overtime.

Just a pathetic loss.
That most likely is the end of Samsonov.
Samsonov needs to make some saves but we made some bad mistakes in front of him tonight.
After playing some real good hockey for awhile, we're back to playing very loose and uninspired the past few weeks.
Mistakes always look worse when they go in the net. The reality is every team makes mistakes and the Leafs made very few tonight, unfortunately almost all of them went in.

A rookie AHL goalie is probably better than this, at worst it's just as bad. That's how bad it has gotten.

Its a 4 on 3 pp... you can't defend the net front guy without completely exposing the flanks. Also congrats on taking photos of bad positional moments as if every team doesn't have them every game.

They scored on all those "moments."

In no way am I saying Samsonov didn't lose the game.

However, he had help on at least 3 of the goals against by Liljegren losing the puck on a nothing play, Leafs giving up a 3-1, which turned into a 2-0. And 3 Leafs not being aware of more than 1 player on the ice(puck watching).

well. that turned out OK. Leafs earned a point...important...and they confirmed Samsonov can't play his way out of this funk in the NHL. If he won the game 5 -4...would it actually be better? no, it wouldn't.

now the bandaid gets ripped off, and another goalie has to make an entrance for the Leafs. their AHL guy...or maybe a free unsigned sidelines keeper making low $$. I can't see a trade being done, but who knows. Treliving's turn to impress, easy peasy. then tread water for 6 weeks, and put the eggs in the Woll basket, wait for Samsonov to trend up in the AHL and give Jones backup starts, and boom, there's the critical path for the season.
