I think it's time to take a step back as an organization and reset in the off season, we've seen enough of this group
That time was 5 years ago. I have no idea what we have been trying to do since.

Just goes to show you how much the team misses Reavo and that he’s both the glue guy and best DJ option for the team.
What's our record with and without Reeves?

Just over 2 months until the trade deadline. They're effectively a .500 team right now after tonight's loss and that includes 4 miraculous comeback wins with the goalie pulled late in the game. If they're still in this position, are you really signing Nylander for $10.5M and Marner for $11.5M in the near future? If so, why? What do you think will be different in the next 5+ years than the last?

I'm not even saying rebuild but if I could get a decent return in a deadline deal for Nylander (the only elite player they have control over), and the team is still in the same position as they are right now, I would trade him in a heartbeat because the only other options are tripling down on this core + tagalongs or watching Nylander walk to UFA status for zilch.
My belief is that the brand is so dominant and at the forefront of the board's mind that risk is no longer an option for the team. They can make big splashy moves (like Tavares), but I don't think the brand can tolerate risk. That means the only option with Nylander is a big splashy signing, as we had with Matthews. There is no trade option because the brand can't tolerate the risk of that kind of trade. It's not dissimilar to teams like the Lakers or the Yankees. Those teams don't make risky trades - the only trades they make are the ones that bring in superstars, not send them out. That is the Leafs. They won't trade Nylander because above all else, it will look bad. I don't think this franchise will do that anymore.

Yeah I’d say we should be sellers but I can’t see us being any better without William and we can’t trade any of the other 3 without their consent. So we are screwed again. Didn’t see that coming.

I think William is a great player but if he was gone, it's quite literally the least of their worries. He's the last thing the team is lacking. He will command $10.5M+ somewhere. Dunno but I'd be looking for a goalie and a replacement for Brodie with that money myself and if we could pick up a couple of other pieces and/or picks at the trade deadline from a real contender as well, it's all gravy in my mind. Especially if you feel like me that this team is going nowhere this season.

lol every time they play him he gets worse
It's beyond cruel at this point, the guy is falling deeper and deeper into the sinkhole...they can't keep playing him as a favour to Sammy the young man and the entire Leaf fanbase.

Once the fans turn on him, it's gonna be Larry Murphy bad

That's good argument and you may be right.

In an ideal world I think we need:
1 goalie
3 dmen
2 top 6 forwards
2 3rd line forwards
1 4th line forward.
And a new coach.

We're nearly there.

It's already happening. He's gotten jeers from the crowd in a few games now when he's made an routine save. Happened again tonight.

He got us Jones (who's not great, but a decent enough backup). Treliving obviously asked Shanny, Keefe, goalie coach, training staff, and all the other 300 employees we have what should he do with Sammy and they said resign him. I don't think our new GM thought, Jesus Christ, I must have this goalie. That's why he went to arbitration imo. Brad thought, ok you've got 1 year to show me.
Treliving came in and found he had a goalie tandem of Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov. An embarrassment of riches, er, no, just an embarrassment.

Not much more to say other than I’m liking Gudbranson more and more every time I watch him. Worth a looksie as a UFA this summer? Doubt he’s getting another $4m a year and would look like a solid 3RHD….

Nice to see Robertson get one tonight and losing sucks.

On to the next one.

Really wouldn’t read too much into the Leafs being “Bettman .500” or whatever the f*** our record is right now. Samsonov is putting up such terrible numbers that even Toskala would blush. Sammy is putting on a goaltending disaster that hasn’t been seen in over 15 years.

Not saying the Leafs are perfect or that they don’t have holes but we need to be grading on a serious curve here. Tonight was their best defensive performance of the season analytically and yet they still allowed 6 goals.

I'm confident at this point (actually long before, but reinforced even more now) that there's nothing realistic this team will do on the ice between now and the trade deadline that will convince Treliving to be a buyer and mortgage what few picks/prospects this team has left on a frivolous attempt to go on a deep playoff run.

They don't have it.

The defense is not good enough, they will have to rely on a goalie that hasn't played a full NHL season, still a top-heavy team - even more so with each passing year that doesn't have the scoring depth required, the inconsistency, the failure to show up in "easy" games, barely above .500 in regulation ...

The question really is, internally, what will MLSE/Shanahan's marching orders for the GM be? Do they accept reality and move on from this season or insist that Treliving go for it again, just like Dubas did every year?

Ya, maybe we should coddle these multi-millionaire professionals a little more cause you know... feelings.
We really do need guys with a bit of arrogance guys on the edge, guys that want to be in the spotlight. Guys like Jagr, Gilmore, Mathews. Our other 3 are like boy scouts too nice to be brutal.
