I was mad when I first read the condition but the I realized if we made the ECF id probably be somewhat satisfied by the season
Me too, but "if" we made it that far, we would assume he blended and was helpful in getting there, but we would NEED to sign him moving forward, for it to REALLY be worth losing that 1st. At this point I wanna lose the 7th game, so the kids get the most experience BUT dont lose that 1st.

I get that some people believe Copp was gotten for an overpayment, and technically they are probably right. Thats the TDL. In comparison to other deals I saw out there though this was a very good deal. Providing he is resigned. If he is it’s a B+, if not it’s a C+, IMO of course. This is why you stockpile assets though, so you can “overpay” for your exact needs if necessary. Is Copp worth Barron, and two conditional 2nds? Not in a vacuum most likely but Copp is worth way more to THIS team than those assets. IF NYR can target and acquire that under 25 years old legit 2C we clamor for, expect another “overpay.” And expect that it’s STILL good for the team. Still a good use of assets.

Roster on the NHL app shows Copp with 18, Motte with 64, Braun with 61.

I am sad Barron is gone, but it became clear he wasnt getting a shot here. It may just be as simple as the org not wanting to break in another young player while they have so many here right now. I dont agree with that, Barron should have gotten a real shot, especially with all the injuries. At this point the thing I hate most of the trade is the conditional 1st. I suppose I can stomach it, but I hate the idea of trading 1 and 2 for copp. Wish at the very least if it became a 1st than the other 2nd dropped to a 3rd, something like that, but at this point it is just complaining to complain bc the pick would be in the late 20s anyways if we made the conference finals. Overall copp adds so much versatility to this team and can essentially be another goodrow but with more offense. The rangers just became that much better.

2-3 years ago I would agree but the Rangers have built enough capital through the draft recently to start moving picks and prospects to fill holes.

I was a big Barron guy too, but let’s not forget they have Othmann, Cuylle and Berard all waiting in the wings. Two of the three likely will be as good or better than Barron.

Also don’t forget that they pulled Barron out of the 6th round. To turn a surprise into a possible longterm 2 or 3C is a huge win.

Add to the fact that Drury got through the deadline and retained Nils, Robertson and Jones and you are left with plenty of assets you can move to jump back into the first if needed.

If the second turns into a first it will be 28-32 at the end of the first round. It also means the Rangers are on a Cup run and Copp is a little more likelier to resign (I think he we sign with the Rangers anyway which makes the deal much more palatable).

Going into the deadline I was interested in moving assets to fill holes past this season, with Copp the intention is there and he is the main piece this deadline. At this point I’d rather have holes filled then a couple picks that will take years to mature and likely not materialize.
I don't necessarily disagree with this, they still have their top prospects, but I still think they gave up too much for a rental. Barron didn't get a chance here, passed over by career AHLers with no upside. Still young and developing. If Copp does resign, it might be easier to stomach. If they get to the ECF/get to a Cup Final/win a Cup, it'd be great.

They may re-sign him, we don't know that right now.
True, but he has buddies here, it’s a team on the rise, it’s NYC, a first rate organization in most ways. Why would he look to move? And if they win two series turning that 2nd to a first, I’d be shocked if he didnt sign here. I believe the plan is to sign him, and it happening makes sense. But yeah, if the thought process was pure rental I agree it’s too much.

I am going on the premise that Copp is not a rental. It think its 70/30 he resigns here

I liked Barrons game as well, but you cant keep them all

I think guys like McKegg and Brodz played over Barron because they have more spend, and that's something this lineup needed. Or maybe Gallant preferred them because they could give him some PK time. Whatever the reason, I don't think Barron was treated unfairly. He didn't get a lot of opportunities, but he didn't do anything with the opportunities he did get. I still think he can be a good bottom 6 player, but right now we need guys who already are good bottom 6 players.

Drury loves versatile players. He was once one of those that played multiple forward positions. Goodrow, Strome, McKegg, Vatrano, Chytil, Rooney, Copp but yet we suck at faceoffs. Copp should teach these players how to win them in certain situations :sarcasm:

Jets fan here.

You guys will like Copp. He is a guy you can put ANYWHERE in your forward group and he won't look out of place. He is great defensively and can definitely chip in offensively as needed. Good on the faceoff dot and can PK very well. Congrats!
I think given some time Barron will grow into a nice player as well, for some reason that wasn't gonna happen here

I think Copp is going to have a nice extension and Strome's "A" by Opening Night next year. Hopefully his name etched in metal as well but lets not get to far ahead of ourselves.

I agree you can't keep them all, but would rather have seen him get a legit opportunity here to show his potential before deciding to move on from him. I believe he can be a legit NHL player, he's still developing, but unfortunately, he wasn't given a chance to prove it with the Rangers.
