He went back to Russia right after the season to visit family but came back early for the purposes of beginning training for next year

Probably makes sense if they're playing it safe with Svech. Might be a good idea to avoid the early wear and tear of the almost immediate long western road trip. When they started out poorly last year, it seemed like the heavy travel load might have been part of that.
