Not going to lie, I went "what the f***" when I first saw the trade as I think Drysdale will be a #1 defenceman for a long time in the NHL.

But after settling down, Gauthier has huge potential as a scoring forward but also will add a lot of size with that scoring to the line up, which we badly need when you look at the lack of forwards with size on our roster.

Still would have preferred it to be Zellweger myself, but have to give to get.

At the end of the day, I'm happy to have a GM pull the trigger and trade away from a position of strength and acquire in a position of need. Certainly seems like our defensive talent pool won't be wasted this time around like it was last time.

I liked Drysdale, didn't have as high of hopes or expectations for him that many did, but I still expected him to be a 2/3 and a PP specialist

I'm not worried about Cutter signing. Beeker doesn't make this deal if they hadn't asked the question and received and acceptable answer. You also have to think that any young forward looking at what we're building has to be excited to play with Zegras, McT, Carlsson and Terry.

This trade also tells me the front office has a lot of faith in our D prospects. Now we see how quickly they try and fill the Drysdale void or if they just go back to the d lines before Drysdale came back.

It might make sense but still I'm shocked. Sucks to see Dry getting traded... Also, not a big fan of players who say to team "I don't want to play here/there".

I don't mind it if they have a good reason behind it. Like Thurn had a good reason to say he didn't want to play here. Both situations too, the players aren't pulling a Schultz, they are allowing the teams to still recoup on their investments

1 thing I will say is gauthier is exactly the type of player we want and need.
It really is a perfect fit. Can’t have both Dry and Zell out there imo, we have tons of talented d, we need more size up front and we need a solid goal scorer. This will also help the tank and enable us to go F or D at the draft. We will see how good he actually is but I think him playing wing with talented centers around him will make it easier.

Totally forgot that Bob Murray is an advisor for Philly now.
This would certainly explain why I saw him at so many Ducks games in November and December, though Drysdale was still hurt for all of the games I saw him at (haven't worked at the concierge in awhile so he may have come to some since he's been back)

Something else, this has 0 to do with Fowler. Fowlers age + his trade restrictions, he's not going to Philly, and that's not the kind of player a franchise would give up to get Fowler unless it's a Cup contender missing a specific piece. This wasn't a "who do we trade, Drysdale or Fowler?" Scenario.

My guess is the only part of this that was the real negotiating piece was the pick.

Soooo?

That forward group looks fun. I don't think that's the D that goes out but I'm also just very confused about the D right now. This just adds to all the moving pieces that could end up being the D pairings.

I don't know how to feel about this. I've felt for a while that at some point you have to look at a glut of offensive defenseman in Drysdale, Zellweger, and Luneau (I don't count Minty because I think in his prime he'll be a two way beast with a better offensive inclination) and then look at the thin depth of young forwards past the main core, one of them had to be traded for an improvement and why not a bluechip young forward?

Jamie is a great guy with good upside but he's small and has been injury prone so...hes more established than Zellweger and Luneau but they could be just as good and Minty is all but guaranteed to be better.

I don't like that Gauthier essentially forced Philly to trade him and indicated he didn't want to play there. Gives me concerns about his attitude and personality.

But, I can't deny that if he pans out he slots in real nice as a triggerman winger that we really needed.

wtf. completely out of no where. how do we give up a former 6th overall defenseman and not get a 1st round pick back. immediate thought is Pat continues to get the raw side of every trade.

I like it…. Depending on where that pick lands tho, it may be another forward
