Agree. There are no compliance buyout candidates for this season. Unlikely for next season also, unless someone regresses very significantly and/or Komi does not have a rebound season.

Exactly. Komi I believe has 1 more year left, and the Leafs have plenty of cap space next year to do things. If they are hell bent to move him next year, I can see Nonis trying to use the avenue of taking a cap hit to move him for his last year. IMHO we will see plenty of buyouts and moves this summer in anticipation to the lowered cap next year. Probably one of the busier summers we have seen in a very long time.

There are no candidates. Any buyout would still count against the cap this season so there is no logic in using the buyout provision now. Depending on performances, there remains the option of using the 2 compliance buyouts after the season if some player regresses dramatically and/or a player like Komi does not have a rebound season.

I was talking about roster space.

Whoever makes the team, makes the team. Frattin and Kadri may be able to be brought up from the Marlies if need be anyway. You mentioned using a buyout; why use it when you could waive a player if you really have to use the roster spot? Such as waiving Lombardi if need be? No need to use a buy out at all.

Wouldn't it make the most sense to buy out Komisarek and his 2 remaining years since Lombardi and Connoly expire at the end of the year anyways?

No reason to buy out Connolly. If we end up moving Bozak in a trade, say hi to our new top line center. Plus I think he can contribute this season even from the third line. He helps the special teams, brings some offense, and can fill in for injuries.

And, best of all, he is on the last year of his contract. So he will be off the books in only 48 games anyway, and might even net us a small return if we are sellers at the deadline.

Lombardi.

Komisarek is at this point still more proven than Holzer, Rielly, Fraser etc. We can get rid of him in the summer.

As for Connolly, he sucked bad at the end of last year, however, he had a good first 20 games or so, and there is no denying his talent level. I do believe that if given a chance, he can put up 50 - 60 points. He deserves a chance to prove he can do that

Connolly can also play the wing, and was very good in Buffalo in the 5 on 3 pk. If a younger player beats out another, so be it, but center depth is essential. Plenty of cap space next year for Komi, and if not, can probably be traded in the last year of his contract especially of the Leafs retain some of his cap hit. Dont see anyone personally who is a candidate for this; at least not on the Leafs anyway.

There is absolutely no reason to buyout guys with on year left, the team isn't in desperate need of cap space.

There really isn't a point of buying anyone out at the moment, especially guys like Lombardi and Connolly. If we're going to let them go try and move them for a pick. They have 1 year left so it would be a waste of a buy out

His cap hit will count against us this year and he's a pending UFA, no sense in buying out Connolly. Komisarek is the only candidate because we won't be hit with his salary in 2013-2014.

Even with that being said, we still don't need to burn a buyout right now.

We should buy out Komisarek now and then use the 2nd one in the summer to buy out another teams bad contract for prospects and picks.

Why not just waive Lombardi? Either gets picked up or gets sent down to the Marlies.

it wouldnt even free up cap space...

There is no advantage (from a teams perspective) to buying a guy out now. It is simply just an option that teams have to be "nice" to players they wouldnt play anyway - by giving them a chance to play in the league again.

In order to even do this , the player must be waived first. There's a good chance a team would pick up Komisarek , Connolly and Lombardi... I woudn't mind clearing a spot up front so Kadri and Frattin can stay in the line up regularly.

Kypreos just tweeted:

This might mean Komisarek gets bought out if he isn't among the top 6 D men in camp.

Cant see Komi with shortage of d men....could see one of the forwards...Orr, Connoly, Lombardi who are really redundant and blocking some of our younger guys like Kadri and Frattin. We could send them to the Marlies but why not use an amnesty

Shouldn't be Komi IMO. Our defense would get pushed around so bad, and he will excel with Randy Carlyle. Book it.

He'll never be 4.5 good (welcome to UFA...), but he'll have a turn-around season I think.
