If you look at our D depth, its:

Dion
Gunnar
Liles
Komi
Gardiner (assume healthy)
Holzer
Franson

I really don't think anyone from the A or Rielly impressesing them enough to dump Komi, especially when Gardiner is just recovering from a concussion. You need to have 7 NHL ready bodies, and at the moment, we barely have 7.

I agree with you, with the exception of switching Komi and Gardiner in the order. I just don't see what Komi brings to the lineup that Holzer or Fraser would not.

We might not need the capspace now, but there could be some high quality players available at deadline (Luongo, Perry, Getzlaf...even Iginla) and might need the cap space then. I hope Komi rebounds but I hope Nonis considers the option, especially if Reilly makes the team. Nothing wrong with a D-Core of:

Gunnar-Phaneuf
Gardiner- Liles
Reilly-Holzer
Franson

I was just listing them actually. I would put Komi last actually, if it were rankings. Franson can at least skate, albeit not very fast.

doesn't make sense to buy out Komi this year, he only has one more year after this year, so the the length of time that is owed to Komi would be two years less if management decided to buy out Komi over this summer.

I'm also curious as to how Komi will improve this season after working on his skating and quickness.

Teams Can do Compliance Buyouts This Week

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
As per @Real_ESPNLeBrun, clubs can do one accelerated compliance buyout this week. Applies to players earning $3M or more AAV.

With this option if Kadri and Frattin out play guys will management just guys out? We only have 2 who should we use it on?

Who cares how long it takes for MLSE to pay Komi his money? All that matters is that his 4.5mil will be off our cap when it comes down to 64

Hopefully the leafs use these buyouts wisely aka people they 100% know can't get ANYTHING for, because a late pick is always better than simply letting someone get paid to suck

This would be true normally, but not with this new exception.
The play would hit the cap 100% this year like you were sitting him in the press box and then 2/3 the cap over 2 twice the term starting next year of the remaining years.

So it would be exactly like sitting him this year and buying him out next year

If both guys look like locks, I think they use it on Connolly, and trade Lombardi to Phoenix (assuming they are interested).

leafs dont have to use it on anyone, not should they. They are under the cap this year and even have space left. There is a very real possibility for injuries with such a condensed schedule, it would be in the best interest for the Leafs to keep as many roster players on board, and hopefully callups at the ready. Would rather see the leafs use their buy outs this summer, in trades, for teams that dont have the financial wherewithall to buy out players; malone for example.

These buyouts last until the end of summer 2014. It's no benefit for us to use them now.

See what happens this season and see what kind of shape we're in after re-signing key players at the end of next season.

Why Connolly? They have cap space this year, and need center depth.

Bozak
Grabo
Mc Clemment
Steckel

spares;
Connolly
Lombardi
Kadri (?)
Colborne

If you think all the center's will stay healthy this season, you may be in for a suprise.

How the hell are you gonna make space for Kadri and Frattin otherwise (assuming they stick)?

Komisarek had a better season last year. His cap hit doesn't affect our team whatsoever. As soon as we buy him out, another team will sign him. He needs to stay on the leafs for this season, until a better alternative surfaces.

Agree. There are no compliance buyout candidates for this season. Unlikely for next season also, unless someone regresses very significantly and/or Komi does not have a rebound season.

What would the point of doing it to Connolly be? So we have 3 million on the books for two seasons instead of just getting rid of him when he is a UFA in 5 months? It's not like saving money means anything right now. And who plays centre instead? What if Bozak or Grabovski get injured?

It's the same with Lombardi and buying him out (instead of trading him)

Why are we going to do it and have them on the books for an extra year instead of getting rid of them in 4 months?

Furthermore, why are people putting rosters with 12 forwards and 6 dmen. Players get injured. We'll carry 14 forwards and 7 dmen. Or 13 and 8.

You're assuming they stick.

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
Mac-Grabovski-Kulemin
Kadri-Connolly-Frattin
Brown-McClement-Komarov
Lombardi-Steckel

JVR is hurt right now but the lesser of Kadri/Frattin go down if he returns. You're assuming no one gets hurt either.

The Leafs have over 4 million in cap space available, with a full roster including players like Reilly and Frattin. What do they need to clear cap space for??? They have plenty.

Compliance Buyout Candidates on the Leafs (1 Allowed)

According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com, teams are now eligible to exercise an "accelerated compliance buyout" on one player with a salary cap hit of $3 million or more before the regular season begins on Saturday.

TSN

With the news that teams are now allowed to exercise the compliance buyout on one player, I'm wondering if there are players on Toronto that could become candidates for this.

Mike Komisarek
Matthew Lombardi
Tim Connolly

These guys all come to mind depending on how things go at camp. If we are to build this team around youth, those three will be taking a lot of space up front and hinder development for our youngsters. I believe the best way to learn is to do it on the fly. The reports on Komisarek looked good as he took the offseason to seriously train and comply with what the coaching staff asked him to do.

Anyone on this team worth a buyout?

read the new rule, for this year only it's 100% cap and only this years term.
Not 2/3 salary over 2x term.

So for a player with a 1 year deal, it would be like them staying at home for the entire year

No point in executing a buyout if there is no one to replace the player you remove.

Leafs are better off reserving their buyouts for the summer. Are you able to buyout players that were just freshly traded to their new team? Could we possibly offer a buyout of a player for picks or something?

Komisarek is the only candidate imo. The others two are on their last year so it doesn't make sense.
