He would still count 100% against the cap. No reason at all to do it.

Sure there is, it frees up a roster spot for another player. Let's be honest, last year he was on the lineup many nights despite the fact he wasn't among the 6 best D men we had. This year Komi has way more competition than last year.

If we use the buyout this season, it should be for Connolly. We need roster spots up front, and he seems like the most useless of the 3 bad contracts. We can buy out Komo in the offseason if he doesn't get his **** together.

So if a team utilizes the option to buy out a player during this window prior to the season opener, the cap hit remains only for the remainder of this season.

Does it makes sense to buy out Komi now and be stuck with his 4.5 million cap hit for the rest of this season?

If the Leafs buy him out in the summer, I assume his cap hit will be on the books next year?

Might as well let him play out his contract or try to unload him in a larger deal before then.

It's all up to Carlyle. We have to wait patiently for his final list. This option definitely is a bonus for us, that's for sure.

If it comes down to Kadri or Connolly or something like that, perhaps this can be the tie breaker. ;)

this is basically the NHL solution to the Redden/Gomez situation so they can be bought out now that way teams don't just make the stay home. we wont buyout anyone.

We're unlikely to spend the cap available anyway. Toronto doesn't need the cap space this season, we have too many players as it is. This compromise is all about under-performing players getting an opportunity to get on with their careers elsewhere.

All depends on if Nonis was planning on buying him out in the summer. I

If he was and Komi doesn't make the top 6, then Nonis will buy him out for the same reason Gomez and Redden are being bought out.

If Nonis was not planning on buying him out this summer and/or Komi makes the top 6, then he won't be bought out.

I would do it just to get rid of Connolly and Lombardi.

Kulemin - Bozak - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Frattin
Lupul - Kadri - MacArthur
Brown - McClement - Komarov

If you look at our D depth, its:

Dion
Gunnar
Liles
Komi
Gardiner (assume healthy)
Holzer
Franson

I really don't think anyone from the A or Rielly impressesing them enough to dump Komi, especially when Gardiner is just recovering from a concussion. You need to have 7 NHL ready bodies, and at the moment, we barely have 7.

He still counts against the cap... you can just sit him in the press box. No one is making you play him. You are misinterpreting this rule... it is only helpful to the gomez or redden type player and has no benefit to the team.

Yup. Can't buy him out if he's on IR

I'm not misinterpreting the rule in any way whatsoever. I'm not sure why you think that. I understand fully that he still counts towards the cap this season.

The benefit is that we can ditch Komi if he doesn't make the team (or any other player for that matter that has an NMC). We don't need the cap savings this year so who cares about that? The roster spot is what I care about.
