The only GM in the league actively trying to spend well under the cap on his own. Okay. Block prospects, couldn't get guys to come here. Are you on the Sabres PR team? How long are people going to accept these excuses? Judging by attendance, more and more fans are just not buying into all this BS. People are tired of this drek. If we are well under the cap yet again and a bottom-third team again, it will only get worse, and fewer people will have their heads stuck in the sand.

I did not say which path I believed to be the truth.

I am just intellectually honest enough to admit that I do not have all the information and that I am guessing based on pre-conceived notions.

You have obviously not paid attention to my prior takes on this topic.

Montour wasnt very good when he was here, Sam didnt want to go through a rebuild, Ullmark wanted more money and term than what he got from Boston.
Some teams can tell when the player has the tools to be good in the future. Montour and Ullmark (and Hagel and others) obviously had the tools but hadn't fully put them together yet. Some teams were able to see that early -- Buffalo was not.

It's the same reason that teams are always asking about Sammy and Krebs, and Tuch when he's struggling. They know Buffalo tends to give up on guys early and are therefore a great source for cheap diamonds-in-the-rough.

Thankfully Montreal also couldn’t see the big deal with Hagel.

If you look at the facts on the ground, they are damning. At some point, a lot of people are going to have to ask themselves how, year after year, this team is not spending what it could. The media won't ask that question which is amazing. I can't even imagine a Leafs GM being 10% or 25% below the cap, missing the playoffs, saying he had all the resources he needed, and some journalist questioning, not asking, why he didn't spend close to the cap. Adams would be under siege in Toronto. Or Montreal. Or New York.

I didn't realize Montour was born in 1994. That means he was in his early/mid-20s here. For some reason I had convinced myself he was like 29 already at the time and a known commodity. Realizing he was that young makes me pretty frustrated.

We also traded a 1st for him and then only got a 3rd when we traded him to Fla.

The media have asked, multiple times, and Adams consistently says that he has been given every resource possible to build the team the way that he wants.

That is also a fact.

And the lack of spending on the roster, the cut backs to the scouting department, especially on the pro side, and the neglect of the arena tell a story that appears to be in conflict with what Adams has said on the topic.

But, the fans and media do not have all the information.

I have more than a few stories I can tell where there were "facts on the ground" that led people to assume one thing. But, the truth of the matter was very different. But, it was people's pre-conceived notions that led them to make assumptions that turned out to be incorrect.

It is OK to admit that we do not have all the information here.

It's year 14 of one of the most pathetic runs in NHL history, and people keep making excuses. It's incredible. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid. The league has minimums for spending on cap and even a shrunken staff with a dilapidated arena could still produce a good team. It's not exactly hard to make the playoffs. But ownership is a joke now. The compliant media can go along but when you have arenas 25% empty, save for games where out-of-towns root for opposition, maybe there is a message coming through.

Maybe the guy with a $7 B net worth wakes, but this team isn't even 50% to make the playoffs in 2024-25. The bottom third of the league again. right now. According to objective sport books. Yeah, it's not even July 1, but who can have confidence in these guys anymore?

The fan in me keeps hoping but I just don't see. Lots of feel good moves that do nothing on ice

Who is making excuses?

Holy crap, this thread went off the rails.

So actually coming back around to the topic at hand, Leone's been a find. The Amerks are defensively well structured. They have players in the right position doing the right things, with layers of support. These are the same guys who Appert had for the most part and it's night and day better. The PP is now up to 11th in the league after a slow start, the PK is 15th in the league going into tonight. Second in goals for in the AHL going into tonight but doing it by committee. They have sizeable growth out of some key prospects and have a crazy amount of contributions down the lineup even though they are STILL carrying five extra skaters and 3 goalies. Oh, and they aren't just a rush team nor are they playing boring trap hockey. They forecheck like they mean it, flex between 1-2-2 and 2-1-2 like they have gotten the communication and it shows.

Seeing's Ace's comment about how the knuckleheads on After the Whistle acted, thought it should be a time to give this guy some laurels. He's doing the job, it will not surprise me if he's going to be a coach at the next level (and a good one) with how he's worked in Rochester thus far this half season.
