All picks are not equal ..

If you trade away your best picks like for Marleau and Foligno etc then adding a bunch of 6th and 7th rounders which have very little chance of success they are not equal and so its not just Quantity but Quality. The chance a 6th and 7h rounder hits is about 5% league wide not per team that player ever sees a game in the NHL.

You can't average out 2020 6th and 7th rounders to pretend you made more picks in 2021 and 2022 drafts and not actual 3 but average 6 across all drafts. :wg:

Leafs made only 3 picks in 2021 and currently only have 3 picks remaining in 2022 that is not misleading that is the facts.

I'm not holding my breath that Joe Miller .. Drafted in 6th round in 2020 replaces the 1st rounder we traded for Nick Foligno rental from 2021.

Joe Miller - Center -- Shoots R

Confusing Mess... the Leafs selected in the second round under Dubas, and have only had 2 drafts where they did not select in the first. That is somewhat compensated by the calibre of prospects picked up in round 2 in Robertson and Knies.

So a lot of the missing picks actually come from the mid to later rounds which the Leafs have stocked up on.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Leafs' trade down in this year's draft to get an additional pick in the second round.

This, we had Marchment and traded him for a Smurf because he was “skilled and had hockey IQ” and what we needed is size and grit.

Dubas need to take a few flyers on some of those jam guys too.

I do think we have some decent prospects in Knies, Neimela and Villeneuve (IMO). Amirov is such a wild card at this point and that Troy sucks because I had such high hopes for that kid. I hope he gets healthy but the sports fan in me is like what could we have had instead of him.

Anyway they really need to hit on the few bullets they have this year and hope the kids develop. Liljegren was a revelation last year and if he and Sandin can make the jump we likely will be able to trade Muzzin to free up some cap space.

Neither of these guys are particularly large though. They are skill and hockey IQ type picks, but they can also play a jam style of game. Size and grit are far from synonymous. We have had some large guys who were not very gritty, and some smaller guys who were excellent in tight areas and were very gritty. Most of the smaller guys we have drafted are fairly gritty, but maybe need to pack on some muscle to make it more effective. Eventually, there is no reason they can't handle physical challenges as well as a guy like Liljegren has (and considering that guy is not getting outmuscled very often, even by big guys, I would say that is a good thing).

And when you say we needed size and grit, I am sure you are not saying that we needed a 4th line scrub who could barely play. We have that kind of size and grit already, and it does not exactly fit what we need.

Meanwhile, Malgin played a game that is far from perimeter but he needed to add some more strength, especially to his shot, to be a more dangerous threat. He did that and responded by being one of the top European league players the past 2 years and dominating in a tournament containing a lot of high end NHLers. I am not sure he is what most people would call "gritty", but he is the kind of guy who, while small, can factor into a lineup a variety of ways in today's NHL... Especially now that he has had a little bit of time to develop away from the NHL.
